Rhea, Crenshaw engagement announced Macy Rhea and Dale Crenshaw Molly and Steve Rhea o f Heppner announce the engagement o f their daughter, Macy, to Dale Crenshaw, both of Los Angeles, CA. Dale is the son o f Ida Crenshaw o f Arlington, TX and the late Cecil Crenshaw'. Macy is a graduate o f Heppner High School. She earned an associate’s degree from the Fashion Institute o f Design and Merchandising and a bachelor’s degree from Cal State University North Ridge. She is currently employed with Maharam in Los Angeles. Dale, who is from Odessa, TX, is a graduate o f Big Spring High School in Big Spring, TX. He graduated from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. He is employed as an actor. The wedding will be held on April 25, 2009, at Westwood United Methodist Church in Los Angeles. Birth Announcement Claire Corrine Lindsay - Dan and Ashley Lind say of Lexington announce the birth o f their daughter, Claire Corrine Lindsay, on Saturday, October 18, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Pendleton. At birth she weighed eight pounds, six ounces and was 20 and V a inches in length. She joins two siblings, Paul, 3, and John, 1. Hughes, 79, o f Fossil, died Friday, O ctober 24, 2008 at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. He was bom Decem ber 17, 1928 in H epp ner, one of five chil dren bom to Joe and Olive B a s s e tt H u g h es. He w as raised and Thomas J. a tte n d e d Hughes schools in Heppner, graduating from Heppner High School. The sum m er after high school graduation he h itch h ik ed to A laska to spend a year working on the Alaska-Canadian High way. Mr. Hughes returned to O regon and attended L infield C ollege in M c Minnville. While there he met his future wife, JoAnn Daryll Steams. On April 21, 1951 the couple was married in McMinnville. He gradu ated in 1952 with a degree in education and taught his first year in Fall City. He moved to Fossil w ith JoAnn and his four ch ild ren , Pam ela, B rian Thomas and twins Michael and David. Mr. Hughes served in the O regon N atio n al Guard, was active in many civic organizations includ ing the Heppner Elks Lodge and the Condon Elks Lodge, the Shriners, Masons, and the Eastern Star. After retir ing from teaching he moved back to Fossil and was a member of the Kinzua Golf Club, pursuing g o lf as a hobby. He is survived by: his life partner o f 27 years, lone Marler o f Fossil; daughter, Pam Stroda and her husband Jim of Monroe; sons: Brian (Tom Jr.) Hughes and his wife Linda o f Junction City, M ichael Hughes and his wife Vicki of Pearland, TX, and Dave Hughes and his wife Lori of Brownsville; 15 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: his wife, JoAnn; b ro th e rs , Joe and B ill Hughes; sisters Ellen and Mary Olive; grandson, John Thomas; and daughter-in- law Elaine. A graveside service for Mr. Hughes was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 28, at the Heppner Masonic C em etery in Heppner. A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oc tober 28, 2008 at the Isobel Edwards Hall in Fossil. A memorial dedica tion is planned for the sum mer o f 2009 at the Kinzua Hills G olf Course. Sweeney Mortuary o f Condon is in charge of arrangements. James H. “Jim” Hayes J a m e s H. “ J im ” Hayes, 72, of Heppner, died October 15,2008 at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Hep pner. Mr. Hayes was bom in Heppner on August 12, 1936, the son of Jam e s J. and V iv ian Stout Hayes . He w as raised and a tte n d e d James H. ‘Jim’ school in Hayes H eppner, graduating from Heppner High School. He then atten d ed O regon State U niversity in Corvallis. Following his graduation from O regon State University he became an o fficer in the U nited States Navy where he flew helicopters during the early Vietnam War. Follow ing his Navy career Mr. Hayes piloted commercial airliners for Pan American Airways. On June 30,1961 he married Barbara Baker in Pensacola, FL. The couple has two sons, Jam es, W. “Jay” and Loran S. The fam ily moved from Medford to Heppner in 1976. Mr. Hayes coached little league and w as a 4-H leader. He became an avid golfer and served a term on the Willow Creek G o lf C o u rse B oard. He also served on the Morrow C ounty M useum Board. His hobbies included hunt ing, fishing, RVing, which included being a member of the Pendleton Rovin’ Elks, and he enjoyed w atching high school athletic events. Survivors include: his wife, Barbara o f Hep pner; sons, James W. “Jay” Hayes and his wife Diane o f Marshall, MI and Loran Hayes and his wife Cindy o f Greenville, SC; grand children, Jordan Hayes o f Marshal, MI, and Hannah Hayes and Sam Hayes o f Greenville, SC. A memorial service for Mr. Hayes will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 30,2008 at the United Meth odist Church in Heppner. Sweeney Mortuary o f Heppner is in charge of arrangements. Hubert Eugene “Gene” Cole H.E. “Gene” Cole, 84, formerly o f Heppner, died Saturday, October 25, 2008, in Bryson City, NC. He died following a long battle with Parkinson’s Dis ease. He was bom on June 16, 1024 in Forney Creek, Swain County, NC to John and Emeline Woody Cole. Mr. Cole honorably served his country in the United States Navy during World War II on the escort ship the USS Baker. Follow ing his return from service, he was filled with a sense of Celebrate Heppner Christmas and Customer Appreciation Day announced Celebrate Heppner C hristm as and C ustom er Appreciation Day will be held on Thursday, December 18. The Heppner Chamber is planning lots o f fun and a great community event. The merchants will be having their “open house” so plan on coming and stro llin g dow ntow n Heppner during the day. The evening events will kick off at 6 p.m. with the annual C hristm as Light Parade, followed by the Community Christmas Party, which will be held at the Elks Lodge from 6:30 - I p.m. The Elks will be preparing a dinner of beef stroganoff with salad and French bread so plan on “dining in” as a family; there will be opportunities to have pictures taken with Santa, drawing for the winners of the Chamber Christmas Bas kets and “rewards cards”. You can bring a “new toy” and donate it the Elks for their toy drive and receive a $ 10 “rewards” card to go in a special drawing. Something new this year will be the Christmas “Rewards Card”. When you shop at local merchants from November 14 - December 18, you will receive “re wards cards” for $10, $20, $50, based on the amount spent on merchandise. You will collect all o f your “re wards cards” and bring them w ith you to the evening event. You will be able to place them in raffle boxes for an opportunity to win great prizes, donated by our local merchants. He was a member o f the Seventh Day Adven tist Church o f Bryson City, NC, the Veterans o f Foreign W ars, and the A m erican Legion. Mr. Cole is survived by: brothers John C. Cole of Marion, NC, and Leonard M. Cole of Bryson City, NC; sister, Christine Cole Proc tor o f Bryson City, NC; and several nieces and nephew, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. He w as p reced ed in death by: his wife o f 32 years, Phyllis; twin sisters, Stella Cole (who died in infancy) and Elizabeth Cole B radburn; and b ro th ers, Robert Leon Cole and Ed ward Keith Cole. A graveside service for Mr. Cole will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 30, at the Lexington Cemetery in Lexington. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on N ovem ber 7, 2008 at the Heppner Senior Center. A complete obituary will ap pear in next weeks Gazette Times. The menu will include baked tilapia with parmesan, rice pilaf, green beans, fruit cocktails, hot rolls, and chocolate pea nut butter bars. Artifactory Craft Fair to be held in November The Artifactory Craft Fair will be held on No vember 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Heppner Senior Center. Tables will be reserved on a first paid, first served basis. A table along the wall is $22 and a table in the center is $20. The deadline to register is November 7. Farewell and thank you party to be held for Padbergs A drop-in farewell and thank you will be held for Archie and Jeanette Padberg on Saturday, November 8, from 2-4 p.m. at the home o f Louis and Betty Carlson at 625 S.
