Juanita Martin Graveside service for Juanita Martin will be held 11 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2008 at the Heppner Mason ic Cemetery. Mrs. Martin, Juanita Martin 83, longtime Lexington resi dent died Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at Willow Creek Terrace Assisted Living in Heppner. She was born April 20, 1925 at Monment, Oregon the daughter of Delbert and Emma Vinson Bellenbrock. She started school in Monu ment then attended school at Cecil. She finished her schooling at Lexington. On November 4, 1942 she married Roy G. Martin at Portland, Oregon. She spent the rest of her life in Morrow County where she and her husband operated a wheat ranch near Lexington. He preceded her in death in 2003. She later moved into Heppner and has been a resident at Willow Creek Terrace Assisted Living for the past two and a half years. She enjoyed working in her yard, traveling, golfing and playing pinochle. She was a 50 year member of the Rebekah Lodge. Survivors include her sons: Jim Martin and his wife Kathy, Tommy Martin and his wife Shirley, all of Lexington, 6 grand children and 11 great grandchildren. DA’s Report On June 30, 2008, former Irrigon resident Joel Nathan Hagedom, 28, was convicted of sexual abuse in the first degree in the Mor row County Circuit Court. The crime occurred in Irrigon between May 1, 2005 and August 31, 2006. The victim was under the age of 12 years. Morrow County Dis trict Attorney Elizabeth Bal lard represented the State. “Detective Seth Cooney of the Oregon State Police put together a very solid inves tigation in this case, which enabled my office to pursue the matter aggressively,” said Ballard. Sexual abuse in the first degree is a Measure 11 crime, meaning that it car ries with it a presumptive mandatory sentence. Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey M. Wal lace sentenced Hagedom to the custody of the Oregon Department of Corrections for 75 months along with 45 months of post-prison supervision. It was also rec ommended that Hagedorn register as a sex offender and have no direct or indi rect contact with the victim, the victim’s residence or the victim’s family. Obituaries Guy E. VanArsdale Guy E. VanArsdale, 69, of Lexington died Fri day, July 4, 2008 at St. Vincent Hospital & Medical Center in Portland. At his request no funeral service will be held. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in care of ar rangements. Edward L. “Ed” Hunt Edward L. “ Ed” Hunt, 90, longtime Lexing ton resident died Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at his home. He was bom October 22, 1917 in L e x ington, t he son o f Al e x and Edna Helms Hunt. He at t ended school L .1 Ed’ in L e x Edward Hunt ington, graduat ing from Lexington High School in 1935. He joined the army in 1941 and was honorably discharged at Stoneman, CA with the rank of first sergeant. Following his discharge he worked for the railroad for several years. He later returned to Lexington where he began farming. Mr. Hunt was a faith ful member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, the Odd Fellows Lodge and the Lexington Grange. He is survived by numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Mildred, and a brother Elwood. A private inurnment for Mr. Hunt will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at the Lexington Cemetery for family and close friends. In 2000 she returned to her roots in Heppner and moved into the St. Pat Se nior Apartments living there for eight years. During those eight years she enjoyed play ing dominos, pinochle, and working Thursday mornings as the secretary in the St. Pat’s Sr. Center. Dorris also volunteered at the Heritage Museum, and played golf at the local club. She always knew that her children and grandchildren were partici pating in activities at school, church, 4H, sports, music, and on to college, because she saved all the newspaper clippings and photos sent to her by those living in California, Washington, and New York as well as those living in Oregon. She is survived by: her daughters, Betty Carl son and her husband Louis of Heppner, and Rieta Hill and her husband Walt of Ocean Shores, WA; son, Deane Graves and his wife Doris Kimbell of Umatilla; brother, Glen Wilcox and his wife Joan of Portland; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Dorris was preceded in death by: her husband, John W, Graves; her parents, daughter JoAnne Pettyjohn and her husband Howard; grandson Ken Graves; sister, Eva Brosten; and brothers, Charles, Claude, and Lester Wilcox. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Olney Cemetery in Pendle ton. Following the graveside services in Pendleton, fam ily and friends are invited to St. Pat Senior Center in Heppner for a lunch at 1:30 p.m. Following the lunch, family and guests will have the opportunity to share in the celebration of Dorris’s life. Heppner students attend 2008 National TSA Conference Three Industry and Engineering Students from Heppner along with advisor Dave Fowler attended the 2008 National TSA Con ference. The Technology Student Association (TSA) represented by 48 states, held its annual conference in Orlando, FL June 28-July 2, 2008 with over 4700 in attendance. Matt Garrett and Mercedes Garrett from the Heppner High School TSA Chapter and Bryce Fowler from the Heppner Jr. High TSA Chapter represented both Heppner and the state of Oregon in three events each and also attended a DuPont Leadership Camp. They competed in events such as flight endurance, technology problem solving and model dragster racing. There were 35 events to choose from in the areas of science, technology, engi neering and leadership. Since the organization was chartered in 1978, over 2,000,000 members have participated in its programs and activities. There are currently 150,000 members with the mission to foster personal growth, leadership, and opportunities in tech nology, innovation, design, and engineering. Members apply and integrate science, technology, engineering and mathematics concepts through co-curricular activi ties, competitive events and related programs. There are currently nine chapters in Morrow and Umatilla Counties. Two at Heppner Jr/Sr High, River side High School, Umatilla High School, Echo High School, Hermiston High School, Ukiah Schools, Pendleton High School and McLaughlin High School. Dave Fowler at Heppner Jr/ Sr High is the local chapter advisor and the Oregon State TSA advisor. James Poison at McLaughlin High School is their local advisor and the Oregon conference director. . For the 2008-2009 school year, Oregon TSA has four events planned. There will be a leadership conference for all chapter officers and advisors. There will be a fall competition in December followed by a competition and dinner with engineers in February, then our spring competition in April and ending with the TSA 2009 National Confer ence in June to be held in Denver, CO.
