Celebrate Heppner Days to be held in June 11 1 1 1 1 111 • 1 1 11 i 1 11 11111 C e le b ra te H e p p ner Days will be held June 13-14. A c tiv itie s fo r all ages will begin Friday, June 13, beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the City Park. The day will be filled with a sidewalk sale by dow ntow n m erchants, games and activities, oppor tunities to visit H eppner’s museums, and the 100 year anniversary celebration by Heppner Forest Service Of fice. The day will wrap up 11 1 11 1 1, , Bessie W et/ell Newspaper Library University o f Oregon Eugene, OK 97403 with a barbecue sponsored by Bank o f Eastern Oregon and M orrow County Fair will be providing salad and baked beans. A dessert auc tion will be followed by the C om m unity Talent Show and Joe Lindsay sharing some o f his renditions o f songs he has written. Special treats that will be provided by some o f the merchants on Friday include: a giant strawberry shortcake, donated by Sweet Productions Ice Cream Par lour and Diner and The Vic torian Rose, will be built and served to the first 200 cus tomers; shaved ice will be donated by Murray Drugs; ice cold soda pop will be donated by Jo h n ’s Place; and anniversary cake and p u im i pi the Forest Service. On Saturday eve ning there will be an alumni football game which is being organized by Jess Osmin. Annual Mustang Mop Up held HEPPNER unes VOL. 127 NO. 19 10 Pages Wednesday, May 7,2008 Heppner High School held their annual Mustang Mop l!p on Thursday, May 1. Stu dents from the school worked throughout the day to spruce up the community. The work crews completed 57 civic community based projects. Crews picked up garbage throughout Lexington and Heppner. Students could be found working at the museum, hospital, county annex build ing, the Stable of Youth, Hager Park. Willow Creek Country Club and many other places. Approximately 15 yard clean ups were performed for el derly and handicapped people. Club president Ar chie Ball said the dinner was held in honor o f Nacho E lg u ez ab a l(p lay e r), A n dre Rauch and Kip Krebs (alternates)and last years player Quinn Peck, who are from the Tri-County Shrine club area that covers Mor row, Gilliam and Wheeler counties. The dinner was held in Heppner On April 28 at the Heppner Elks. The guest speaker for the evening was Dick Crist, the Potentate Representative from District # 1 . Head coaches Greg A horse of a different color Grant and Dennis Stefani spoke on the outstanding qualities o f the four young gentlemen on and o ff the field. The p la y e rs also spoke o f their experiences from football and praised their coaches, parents and siblings for helping them with their accomplishments so far in their lives. T h e E a s t-W e s t Shrine game will be held Saturday, August 2 at Baker City. Tickets can be pur chased in advance by call ing Gene O rw ick, before May 15. Fishing derby to be held May 10 Oregon Department o f Fish and Wildlife, along with Morrow County Parks, will be sponsoring a fishing derby on Saturday, May 10, at Anson Wright Park fish- The Morrow County OHV Park in Heppner re- cently announced that it has received a Yamaha OHV Access Initiative GRANT o f $2,785.00 for youth safety eq u ip m en t and su p p lies for training. The grant was awarded as part o f Yamaha’s OHV Access Initiative pro m oting safe, responsible riding and open, sustainable riding areas. Senate Bill 101 was signed into law' by Governor Ted Kulongoski on August 15, 2007. The law requires that all Oregonians operat ing Class I (quads) or Class III (motorcycle) All-terrain Vehicles (ATV) for recre ational purposes on public lands* successfully com plete an ATV safety educa- tion course. It also includes new requirements for adult superv ision of youth under 16 years o f age, fastening o f helmet chin straps, and properly m atching youth under 16 with a correct size quad. These new require m ents w ill be phased in over a period from January 1, 2008 through January 1, 2014. The following sched ule shows when each o f these specific requirements will be put into effect. M o rro w C o u n ty OHV Park has Sandi Put man, Jerry Roberts and Don Stroeber that are local certi fied instructors, trained from the ATV Safety Institute. The Morrow County OHV Park also houses the training facility which includes Steve Myren and Greg Close as the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) Coaches. This training building was funded with ATV Grant Program funds. This training facility and funds for supplies for these classes w ill be the pri ority to provide structured riding classes under quali fied instructors in a safe and friendly environment for the users o f the Morrow County OHV Park and surrounding areas.
