The story of Martin Luther King Jr.
By Melissa Kohhins West
T his month on Mon
day January 21, the United
States w ill celebrate the fed

King Day. Banks, post of
fices, schools and all federal
agencies will be closed.
During the I9 6 0 ’s
the United States was in a
turmoil. Riots and violent
demonstrations were ram
pant due to racial segrega
tion. hate crimes, and many
other events. However, there
was one voice o f sanity
that stood out among the
crow d beseeching people to
stop the violence and come
together as one instead of
many. This man was instru
mental in promoting peace
during a very trying time.
This man was Martin Luther
King Jr.
Martin Luther King
was born on January 15,
1929 in A tlanta, GA. He
grew up to become a Baptist
m inister promoting peace
and harm ony am ong all
races.
In 1961 the F.B.L
began wire tapping King’s
phone in fear that he was
trying to change American
government from a Democ
racy to communist nation
due to one o f King’s friends
being a known strong sup
porter o f the com m unist
movement.
In 1963 King's pro
motions of peace eventually
lead to the March on Wash
ington. It was here that King
gave his famous speech that
would change history. The
speech was called "I Have a
Dream.” This speech raised
aw areness in the crow d.
People decided that they
needed to keep protesting
about the inequalities, but
they needed to do it peace-
