Morrow County School District earns highest level on audit report -Continued from Page one -approved a coop erative sponsorship for girls’ softball between Heppner High School and Riverside High School. HHS had pre viously joined in a sponsor ship with lone, but this year not enough people have indicated that they want to play. HHS Principal Daye Stone and RHS Principal D irk D irk sen , how ever, noted that that if HHS joins with RHS for the softball program, RHS athletics may be upped to a 4A program. “It would give us too many students,” said Dirksen. “It w ould kick us into 4A .” According to OSAA regula tions, total school popula tions must be considered. Children find body while walking home from school On D ecem ber 18, 2007 at approximately 3:54 p.m ., the C ity o f Board- man P olice D ep artm en t was notified by a local par ent o f children reporting a man hanging from a tree. The report indicated the children had been walking home from school when they discovered the man who had appeared to have hung himself. A Boardman Officer and detective responded to the location given. Upon their arrival the police locat ed a middle aged man with nylon strap tied around his neck, the other end was tied to an over hanging branch o f a tree. Morrow County’s Certified Medicolegal Death Investigator, U ndersheriff Steven M yren was called to the scene to perform the death investigation. During the investi gation, the man was identi fied as Mr. Nazaria Gallago- B ocanegro, 44, who had Boardman raises transient room tax been in Boardm an on an extended visit of family. Mr. Gallago-Bocanegro was vis iting from the state o f Ohio where he resided. After concluding the investigation U ndersheriff Myron and the Boardman Police D epartm ent deter mined that Mr. Gallago-Bo canegro had recently grown despondent and distant from family and friends. Fam ily reported last seeing him alive the night before. A hand written let ter was found on his person which family identified as in his hand writing. In the note Mr. G a lla g o -B o c a n e g ro talked o f his sadness and his intentions to end his life. Mr. G a lla g o - B o canegro was bom in Mex ico; he leaves behind two children living in Ohio and family living in Boardman. His remains were sent to his place o f birth in Mexico, returned by family. Town and Country Banquet to be held this Thursday Senior Center Menu Willow Creek Baptist Church members will be serving lunch on Wednesday, January 23. Bob Okeson of River Lodge and Grill in Boardman sup ports the increase to assist the Chamber in promoting Boardman tourism. In other City busi ness, councilors ratified the police union’s contract and appointed Kevin Gilbertson and Jerry Johnson to the C ity P lan n in g C o m m is sion, and re-appointed Scott Martin to the City Planning Commission for three year terms. The next meeting of the Boardman City Council will be Tuesday, January 22, at 7 p.m. at Boardman City Hall. Sorey, Miller plan wedding Corey Miller and Jill Sorey The Heppner Chamber o f Commerce will hold their annual Town and Country Banquet on Thursday, January 17, at 6 p.m. at the Elks Club. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Small Time Life” and is sponsored by Century Tel. Prime rib will be served for dinner and tickets are $25 per person. Tickets can be purchased at BEO, M urray’s, Heppner City Hall, and Heppner Chamber of Commerce. Award categories for this year are Woman of the Year, Man o f the Year, Citizen-Educator of the Year, Youth Recognition, Business o f the Year, and Lifetime Achieve ment. / ii . i i i Dinner will be prepared by the Elks Club and served by the Heppner High School Senior Class. Bob and Tricia Sorey o f Helix are pleased to an nounce the engagement o f their daughter, Jill Sorey, to Corey Miller, son o f Mark and Shanny Miller o f Hep pner. Jill is a 2002 graduate o f Griswold (Helix) High School. She attended Eastern Oregon University where she earned a Bachelors degree in business in 2006 and a Masters degree in teacher education in 2007. She is cur rently a teacher at Stanfield Secondary School. Corey is a 2000 graduate of Heppner High School. He also attended Eastern Oregon University where he earned a Bachelors degree in agriculture business and a minor in crop science in 2004. He is currently a farmer in the Morrow County area. An October 18,2008 wedding is being planned and will take place at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Hermiston. Birth Announcement SWCD and MCLG to hold annual meetings The Morrow County Soil and Water Conservation District and Livestock Growers will have their annual meeting and joint program on Thursday, January 17, at the Heppner Elk’s Lodge. The SWCD regular monthly meeting will begin at 10 a.m. A hosted lunch will be held from 12-1 p.m. A joint program will be held at 1 p.m. The SWCD and MCLG annual meetings will be held at 3:30 p.m. Table displays include: FFA, Willow Creek Weed M anagem ent Area, Oregon D epartm ent o f Forestry, Cattleman’s Beef Marketing, OSU Extension/4-H, Wheat League, Wheatland Insurance, Natural Resource Conserva tion Service, and Soil and Water Conservation District. DA’s Report M o rro w C o u n ty District Attorney Elizabeth Ballard has released the fol lowing report: -Luis A lberto N a varro, 19, was convicted of Theft in the Second Degree, a C lass A m isd em ean o r and was sentenced to 180 days in jail with 180 days suspended, 24 month bench probation, and complete 40 hours o f com m unity ser vice. The subject was also convicted o f Conspiracy to Commit a Class A Misde meanor - Theft I, a Class A misdem eanor, and was sentenced to 180 days in jail with 180 days suspended, 24 month bench probation, and complete 40 hours o f com m unity service. The Justice Court Morrow County Justice Court Judge Charlotte Gray has released the following report: -Aaron Myles Vangorder, 16, Boardman, Violating the Speed Limit by going 38 mph in a 25 mph zone; No Operator’s License “out of provision”, $298 fine. -Donald O. Addington, 46, Hermiston, Careless Driving MVA; Dangerous Left Turn, $185 fine. -Cathleen M. McCabe, 46, lone, Violation o f the Basic Rule by going 85 mph in a 55 mph zone, $185 fine. Tuesday, at the re quest o f the C ham ber o f Commerce, the Boardman City Council voted to raise the City’s transient tax rate to 5%. T his is up from the 3% rate set two years ago. Boardman’s Transient Room Tax Ordinance states the Council can only set or change the rate o f tax in January to be effective the following July 1. The Cham ber o f Commerce feels the increase is needed to fund beautification projects and for advertising to promote tourism in Boardman. She is the first great-grandchild o f Carl and Geri Martin o f Heppner and Edna Struthers Wilson o f Hermiston. Joe grew up in Heppner, the son of Edna and the late Maynard Struthers. He left Heppner in 1983 with his bride, Sarah Martin, and made a career in the U. S. Air Force, retiring recently in Clovis. Aubry is their oldest daughter.
