Holt set to retire from Juvenile Department II i I ii I iii I i I ii III iiiii II i I im II Bessie Wetzell Newspaper Library University o f Oregon Eugene, OR 97403 By Autumn Morgan Carolyn Holt only planned to stay one year w hen she took on a part-time job at the Juvenile Depart ment in Heppner. But that one year kept stretching out until now as, 35 years later. Holt is set to retire. Her last official day will be January 31,2008. As a young child Holt always knew that she wanted to help others when she grew up. In college she studied nursing but quickly decided that it was not the profession she w anted to pursue. She changed her major to sociology and in 1972 received her BA in Sociology from Walla Walla College in Washington. W hile in sc h o o l, Holt had geared all her train ing toward w orking with adults but upon graduating in June received training from the juvenile system in Washington. In September o f 1972, just a few months after graduation, a part-time job opened up here in Hep pner and Holt decided to try it out. After one year o f part- time work the department went to full-time status and Holt decided to stay on. Holt, the daughter o f Homer and Lola Davis, was raised in Lone Rock and graduated from Condon Carolyn Holt’s will retire from the Juvenile Department in Hep pner after 35 years. -Photo by Autumn Morgan High School. She married Chuck Holt in 1977. She has one son, Shawn, in Fruit- land, ID. After her retirement. Holt and her husband plan to move to Weiser, ID to be near their new' granddaugh ter and pursue hobbies. A replacem ent has not yet been named to take Holt’s place but interviews w ill begin at the end o f the month. Her first day was December 2, 2007. For the past seven years the 36 year old has been the associate pastor at Murray Hills Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Beaverton. Shelton was interested in moving on and received a recom m enda tion from a regional pastor about lone. Shelton said she was drawn to lone Com munity Church because it was a multi-denominational church and is affiliated with the N ational A ssociation o f C ongregational C hris tian Churches, the United Church o f Christ, and the Christian Church (Disciples o f Christ). Shelton and her hus band, Jason Reid, are ex pecting their first child in February and thought lone would be a great place to raise a child. “ I was im pressed by the school and the people that live in lone,” said Shelton. “The people o f lone have been so inten tional about their education in general.” Born to Don and Linda Shelton in Antioch, CA, Shelton lived in Colo rado Springs, CO from ages 2-10, and then in Bakersfield, CA until she graduated from high school. She received her bachelor’s degree from Bethany C ollege in West Virginia and in 2000 gradu ated from Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA with a Masters o f Divinity. Shelton learned the day in and out details o f what the ministerial profes sion would entail from her father who is also a minister. “ I love people and I love God,” said Shelton. “Being HF.S «-third graders recently visited the Willow Creek Assisted Living. Dear Santa ... On January 2, 2008, Sheryll Bates will join the Heppner Chamber o f Com merce as the new executive director. She will be taking the place o f Terry Baker who resigned in October. B ates said she is looking forward to begin ning her new job. She will be in charge o f planning Cham ber events, fielding calls with regards to what is happening in the Heppner area, fundraising and will work with the St. Patrick’s committee to help put to gether St. P a trick ’s Day events. Bates will also be in charge of setting up the weekly Chamber lunches, including lining up speak ers and getting the agenda ready. Bates was born in Portland to Roy and Helen Black and was raised in Ash land. She has two daugh ters, Tiffany, a teacher in lssaquah, WA, and Tamara, a massage therapist in Port land. She enjoys spending time on the boat with her husband and w orking at Sheryll Bates her W eekenders Clothing business. Bates has lived in 1 leppner for the last one and a half years since marrying her husband. Dale. She said the couple was trying to determine who would move once they were married but she decided to stay in Hep pner once she saw how tied to the community her soon to be husband was. “ I knew' this was where God wanted us to be,” said Bates. Currently Bates is w orking in Pendleton at Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield o f Oregon on a sales team as an administrative specialist w here she has been for the last year and a half. Before moving to Hep pner she worked for 17 years at Regence BCBS ofOregon as an executive assistant in Portland. “Bates was chosen by the Chamber Board o f D irectors because o f her valuable experience,” said Board Member Nancy Sny der. “She has an extensive b ack g ro u n d in term s o f event planning and has had a number o f years experience in doing the types o f things need for this job. She has experience in working for a larger group o f people and answering to a board. Bates said that she enjoys living in Heppner but has not been able to get very involved in the community since she travels every day to Pendleton. “ Heppner is a great com m unity and I want to capitalize on that and be a part o f that,” said Bates. “ 1 want to be more involved with city events and get to know' people. I want to make a difference in the community.” Closed for New Years Day The Heppner Gazette-Times will be closed on Tuesday, January 1.
