Algae advisory lifted for Willow
Creek Reservoir
lone students get crash course in
insurance and etiquette
The algae adv isory issued in mid-August for Wil
low Creek Reservoir has been lifted, the U.S. Army Corps
o f Engineers announced today.
Recent water sampling confirms reduced levels
o f a species o f blue-green algae that can produce toxins
harmful to humans and animals, with the exception o f the
northwest comer of the lake, which continues to return
high algal cell counts. State guidelines recommend waiting
two weeks after algal cell counts fall below state-specified
levels before lifting advisories related to algae blooms.
The Oregon Department o f Human Serv ices ad
vises people who recreate in Oregon reservoirs to always
be alert tor signs o f algal blooms. People and their pets
should avoid water contact if there are v isible clumps of
algae in the water.
For local information, contact The Dalles, John
Day, Willow' Creek Project at (541 ) 506-7802. For health
information, contact Deanna Conners at DHS, (971 ) 673-
0444. Additional information on blue-green algae can be
found on the DHS Web site at http://oregon.gov/DHS/ph/
envtox/maadvisories.shtml.
E rin H e id e m a n ’s
personal finance and man
agement class at lone Com
munity School got a crash
course in insurance and eti
quette this past week thanks
to classroom presenters Sta
cie Miller, Deacon Heide-
man and Sylvia Sandford.
“It’s nice to know we have
such a pool o f resources
in our community willing
to help,” said teacher, Erin
Heideman.
S ta c ie M iller, an
agent for W heatland In
surance, talked about her
responsibilities as an agent
and what students should be
considering when purchas
ing insurance. Mrs. Miller
suggested a number o f op
tions o f insurance ranging
from the kind o f car you
drive to renters insurance.
“ I would highly recommend
keeping your credit score
high and maintain a good
driv ing record,” she said. “ It
does a lot for your insurance
premiums.”
As a senior adjus
tor for Farmers Insurance,
Deacon Heideman, talked
about what happens when
you submit a claim through
your insurance company and
the process it follows. He
told stories o f claims he has
been assigned from sewer
back ups to fire losses and
what happens to your pre
miums once you do submit
a claim. His biggest piece of
advice was to continue your
education and go to c o l
lege. “Get some education
past high school,” he said.
“In order to competitive in
today’s job world you have
to make yourself marketable
and one sure way of making
sure that happens is to fur
ther your education in some
capacity.”
“Another way to be
marketable in the job place
is to mind your manners,”
said S ylvia S an d fo rd , a
former Miss Rodeo Oregon
and escrow officer. “ First
impressions have an enor
mous impact on your job op
portunities and interviews.”
Mrs. Sandford also talked
about how' to research your
options and how to have
a direction chosen as you
pursue further education.
Her biggest piece o f adv ice
was to make sure that you
are prompt, resilient and are
able to communicate well,
especially with a potential
employer.
