A ppointm ents w ill begin at 11 a.m. A stroke, also know n as a “brain attack,” is ranked as the third leading killer in the world, and the lead ing cause o f nursing home adm issions. Stroke often occurs w ithout warning. The good news is that painless screening can help identify ing problems that can lead to stroke before it is too late. Screenings are fast, painless and low cost. They test for blocked carotid ar te rie s, abdom inal ao rtic aneurysms, and hardening o f the arteries in the legs. Bone density screening is also offered to assess the risk o f osteoporosis. These screening are im portant because o f the silent and often debilitating nature o f the conditions. The m ajority o f strokes are caused by plaque build up in the carotid arteries. The abdominal aorta is the largest artery in the body, and a weakness in the walls o f the artery can cause a ballooning called an aneu rysm, which can rupture. A ru p tu red aneurysm is generally fatal. Peripheral arterial disease or PAD is also know n as “hardening of the arteries." Sufferers have a 4-6 fold increased risk o f cardiovascular disease. Risk is evaluated through a measurement called the “ A nkle-B rachial In d ex ,” w hich is obtained by reading the systolic pressure in the ankle and arm. All four screenings take less than an hour to com plete. The cost for a W ellness Package o f all four screenings including free osteoporosis screening is $129. Life Line Screening was established in 1993, and has since become the nation’s leading provider of vascular screenings. Over 85 ultrasound teams are on staff to travel to local communi ties, bringing the screenings to residents. These non- invasive, inexpensive and painless, ultrasound tests help people identify their risk for stroke, vascular dis eases or osteoporosis early enough for their physician to begin preventive proce dures. For more informa tion regarding the screenings or to schedule an appoint ment call 1-877-237-1287 or visit www.lifelinescreen- ing.com.
