Heppner city manager called out of military retirement Bessie Wetzell Newspaper , , hr<1 ir\ ni versi t> ol Oregon Eugene, OR 97403 When Heppner City M anager D ave D eM ayo retired from the U.S. Army after the G ulf War ended, he never thought that he might be called on to serve his country again 14 years later. But that is exactly what has happened. DeMayo put his name on a volunteer list after retiring just in case the Army ever needed his services. Approximately three weeks ago DeMayo received that surprising call. D eM ayo spent 20 M ilitary, four years with the Navy and 16 years w ith the Army. During that time he traveled around most o f the Pacific and throughout Europe. The one place De Mayo w ishes he could have traveled is Russia and the surrounding countries. De Mayo says he would have stayed longer w ith the mili tary but the end o f the G ulf War marked cutbacks to the military and he was not able to stay on so he was granted retirement. DeMayo expects to leave around mid-Septem ber and while he has not re ceived direct o rd ers yet, he believes that he will probably be w o r k i ng w i t h c o n s tru c tio n firm s in Baghdad. He expects ^ . to be gone ()ave DeMayo approxi mately one year and is start ing to feel a little excite ment about his upcoming endeavor. D eM ayo, who has P arkinson's D isease, will be going to ( )HSU next week to see about having his medication adjusted so that he will be able to perform military duties. D eM ay o and his wife, Neva, moved to Hep pner in November o f 2005 from Vale when he was nam ed city m anager. An interim city m an ag er to replace DeMayo while he is on active duty has not yet been nam ed, but the Heppner City Council did hold a special meeting this afternoon to interview a candidate. George Koftler. “We depend on Becky to supervise the branch operations network that continues to function smoothly as a result of her leadership,” Koftler added. Kindle and her hus band, Jim, a Department of C orrections em ployee in Umatilla, have two children, Mekayla and C.J. Trena Day, Branch O perations Supervisor o f the Irrigon B ranch, was prom oted to Branch M anager. Morrow County, Heppner, Oregon preschooi to hold registration open house Creative Care Pre school in lone will hold a registration open house on Tuesday, August 7, from 5 until 7pm. The preschool is open to children ages three to five years o f age. Fol lowing public school policy, students must be three years o f age before Septem ber 1, 2007 to enroll. The pre school is located at 470 E Main in lone. Creative Care Pre school offers two classes w ith three year olds meeting Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30 a .m .- 11 a.m . and four year olds meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30a.m .-11:30 a.m. Tuition is $60 for the three year old class and $70 for the four year old class per month. Scholarships can be made available. Teacher Betty Ri- etmann will be on hand to greet students and parents. Parents should bring immunization records and birth certificate. P o rt o f M o rro w Commissioner Larry Lind say was honored Wednes day, July 18, w ith a barbecue dinner honoring the 40 years he has served as a port com missioner. The port w as cre ated 48 years ago. Lindsay credited the men who stepped forward to create the port and two men in particular, Dewey West, Jr., o f Boardman, and Gar Swanson o f lone, w ho, says Lindsay, “changed the course o f Morrow County h isto ry " with their fo re sight. Lindsay also gave a great deal of credit to the current port manager, Gary Neal, w ho, he said, “had the same vision as the original pioneers o f the Port . . . recognized the opportuni ties and possessed the skills to make them reality." “ I believe that his (N e a l’s) greatest v irtue was the abil ity to build a team o f staff members and a crew of com petent employees who could accomplish the impossible,” Chamber in search of items to borrow H eppner Cham ber needs the help o f the com munity. The Chamber would like to borrow old cowboy hats, boots, saddles, bridles, and tack for an event being planned for Saturday, Oc tober 20. .The items will be for decoration purposes only and will not be used by the general public. Lindsay said that the port has grown enormously, from bare ground to a vast com plex to include three industrial parks, a regional transportation hub, barge lines, a food p ro cessin g park, the largest municipal water system in Eastern Or egon, a solid waste facility and landfill, the “attractive" Riverfront Center w ith its paved roadways lined with trees and spacious areas o f grass” for offices and community ev ents and now new investments in ethanol and bio-diesel fuel produc tion. Lindsay said the port's budget for the coming year “ levies a tax o f $89,173, only half of one percent of the total budget o f $16.1 million. The port is basically self-su p p o rtin g , g en erat ing its own revenues. Our payroll is $2,191,000 . . . almost 25 times the total tax lev led." Lindsay was laud ed by numerous officials, in c lu d in g N eal, fo rm er port p resid en t and M or row C ounty Judge Louis Carlson, many children and grandehildren, many col leagues and many friends. Sr Center receives $3,500 grant St. Patrick’s Senior Centers secretery Judy Buschke presents president Pete Schwarzin with a check for $3,500 from the Wildhorse Casino in Pendleton. The grant will he used to purchase round tables for the center dining room. Ice cream parlour moves into new location Sweet Productions Ice Cream Parlour has moved. On Friday, July 13, Sw eet P roductions opened in its new location inside The Victorian Rose. “The move gives us more o f an ability to expand.” said Jodi Chapa, owner. Chapa hopes to put in a jukebox sometime in the future. Hours for Sweet Productions are 8:30 to 5:30 M onday th ro u g h Wednesday. 8:30 to 7:30 Thursday and Friday, and II to 7:30 on Saturdays. The house at 250 West East Street belonging to (iene and Chirella Wallace was “fully engulfed” when firefighters arrived at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. No one was hurt in blaze.
