Farmers enjoy Morrow County Crop Tour Annual crop tour Local farmers gath ered Friday, June 15, for the annual Morrow County Dry land Crop Tour. The event was hosted by Chris and Cathy Rauch and Steve and Tana Hill who call their joint farm ing operation north o f Lexington, Starvation Farms. Larry Lutcher, Mor row County Extension agent, had a number o f speakers talk about the various test plots that have been set up on their farm. At the first site, Dan Ball spoke o f her bicide options for weed con trol in chem fallow. Larry Lutcher and Don Wysocki, Pendleton Extension agent, gave their insights on old and new varieties of hard red winter wheat at the next stop. Then, Chris Rauch and Bon Lee from the Wheat Marketing Center in Port land gave an overview o f hard white wheat and the m arketing o p p o rtu n ities that lie ahead for farmers who want to try their hand at raising that variety o f wheat. Most o f the HWW that is produced now is used d o m estically . This variety o f w heat makes ex cellent noodles and steam bread. A ustralian HWW only makes good noodles, so according to the experts, Korea, Taiwan and Japan are anxious to buy from us if we will just produce more. The last stop dealt with fertilizer management. Mike Flowers, OSU crop specialist, discussed sev eral pertinent topics such as: With the cost of fertilizer high, how do growers man age it to get the best bang for their buck? Do they put it on in the fall and gamble that they w ill guess the right amount of moisture during the winter? Or do they put it on in the spring after we know what kind o f winter w e’ve had? Or maybe they split it up...part in the fall at planting time and the rest o f it in the spring. Also how do they manage it for protein levels in the red wheats? Flower also shared the re sults of this test plot with those in attendance. A steak din ner provided by M orrow C ounty W heat G ro w ers with “delicious salads and desserts brought by local farm families was the high point of the evening.” The Rauches and the Hills pro vided a slide show o f the history of their farm through the generation-great-grand- father Chris Moehnke on down through Julian and Irv Rauch and now Chris Rauch and his sister Tana Hill. The fifth generation is being raised on the farm now. M illie Rauch had a beautiful quilt displayed in the shop that followed the same topic.
