The Heppner Mustangs lost in the 8th inning 3-4 on an error to end the season for Heppner. -Photo by Sandy Matthews Mustang JV’s end season with sweep of C-W By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mus tang JV baseball team com pleted their season with a sweep of the visiting Con don-Wheeler Knights on Fri day, May 11, by scores of 10- 0 in six innings and 20-4 in five innings. The Mustangs ended their season with a 14- 0 record. In the opener, the Mustangs scored one in the first when Justin A rcher walked and came around to score on a Sam King double and they added another in the third when King doubled and scored on a Jared Hud dleston double. They broke the game open in the fourth when M ark M cC abe d o ubled; Keenan Jack walked; Quinn Chick and Chris Lien had RBI singles; Archer scored a run with a sacrifice fly; and with the bases loaded, Mc Cabe walked to force in a run and make the score 7-0. The Mustangs added a run in the fifth when Lien reached on a fielder’s choice and ended up scoring on a King single. They ended the game in the sixth when Hud d leston sin g led , M urray walked, McCabe scored one with a double, and Chick scored the tenth run with a single. H ud d lesto n w ent five innings to pick up the win striking out seven scat tering four hits and walking none. King went 4-4 with two RBIs and scored twice; McCabe went 2-3 with two RBIs; Chick went 2-4 with two RBIs; Huddleston went 2-3; and Lien scored twice. In the second game the Knights took an early 1 - 0 lead in the first but the Mustangs came back to tie it when Archer reached on a fielder's choice and ended up scoring on a wild pitch. Heppner would take the lead in the second when McCabe was hit by a pitch; Jack walked; Lien had an RBI sin g le ; and D rew Johnson scored a run with a ground-out. The Knights cut the lead to 3-2 but the Mustangs added another run in the bot tom of the third when Mur ray reached on an error and came all the way around to score on a McCabe double. The Knights cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the fourth but the wheels fell off as the Mustangs would take advantage of pitching prob lems to send 20 batters to the plate in the bottom half, scoring 16 runs on just sev en hits. Chick led off with a walk; Lien singled; Johnson walked; King scored two with a single; Huddleston was hit by a pitch; Johnson scored on a wild pitch; Mur ray walked; and McCabe, Jack and Chick each walked with the bases loaded to force in runs. Lien and Johnson had RBI singles; Josh Shank walked with the bases load ed; King scored two with a double; Huddleston walked; Murray had an RBI single; McCabe walked to force in a run; Jack grounded out to score another and Chick scored two more with a dou ble. Lien went four in nings giving up three runs, one earned, scattered seven hits, striking out one and walking one. Lien also led the way at the plate going 3-4 with two RBIs and scored twice with King going 2-4 with four RBIs and scoring twice. McCabe had three RBIs and scored three times; Chick had three RBIs and scored tw ice; Jack and Johnson each had tw o R B Is and scored twice; Murray scored three times; and Huddleston scored twice. Critters with Attitude 4-H Club meeting held By Lacie Wagoner The C ritte rs w ith Attitude 4-H Club held a meeting on April 22. In th is m eetin g m em bers d isc u sse d and practiced livestock judging skills by judging candy bars. This let the members get a better understanding of the process. The members and lead ers found th at after atte n d in g the ju d g in g workshop, they were able to do a better job judging. The next m eeting will be held on Sunday, May 20. The club will be doing a community service project at the fairgrounds. Quinn Peck selected as Shrine Game alternate Q uinn Peck, Heppner, has been selected as an alternate to play in the shrine game on Saturday, August 4, in Baker City. He will be replacing a player who was selected but now cannot play. St. Patrick’s Senior Center news On Saturday tenants en jo y ed a m ovie and popcorn provided by the H ep p n er V ideo S tore. Everyone enjoyed watching “ B eyond the S e a ” and appreciated the generosity of Nancy Gauchner.
