Urging support for road levy To the Editor: 1 am writing to urge support for the M orrow County Road levy. Because of budget cuts, over which we have no control, and with e v er risin g co sts o f All News and A d ve rtisin g D eadline is M onday at 5 p.m c o n stru ctio n , it is not possible to keep up with m aintain in g n ecessary county roads w ithout a special levy. Without continuing to maintain and improve our local transportation system it will not be possible to keep our economy on track. Very little , if anything would be saved by turning major roads back to gravel as has suggested. The a d d itio n a l cost of maintenance would use up any savings from the lack of paving. In order to keep our local econom y m oving forward I urge you to join me in passing this necessary levy. Raymond French Heppner of these types of projects for several years. We also have done the following projects with o u tsid e d o llars. R econstructed and paved 2.6 miles of Coal mine Hill, reconstructed and paved 4 miles of Juniper Canyon, replaced the Brenner Bridge, replaced the Rhea Creek Bridge, replaced the Clarks Canyon Padberg Bridge #2 and will be replacing the Padberg B ridge #1 very soon. With Title II dollars, 4.5 m iles of the Penland Lake road, 3.8 miles of Ditch Creek road, as well as Shaw C reek grade and Tupper Lane very soon. We paved 10.5 miles of the Bombing Range road as well as added new turn lanes with Finley Butte Road Fund dollars. We will still be able to do some of these types of projects, just not as many. This does not speak to the snow plowing and sanding, or the rebuild work after storms to several roads, or the twice per year road grading we do on our gravel roads If we could find an option to this we would be happy to. However we to this point have no options. Our budget is not growing and will not grow because of the levy. During the 5 years o f the levy we w ill be w orking hard on these projects with levy dollars. But at the same time we would still have our budget for all of the other roads we need to maintain. Please do not force us to make the choice between keeping our good roads maintained or sacrificing them for these four roads because at the end of the day we really have no choice. Voters to decide on county road fix up -Continued from page one available to do this, yet it is In particular those residents of the Wagon Wheel Loop addition are very dependent on this road. In the B oardm an area we will be rebuilding that portion of Kunze from South Main Street to Tower Road w ith State Funds, leaving the rem ainder of Kunze and Miller Rd. to be done with no foreseeable funding. These roads serve the re sid en ts o f the Boardman area. In the lone area we have, through State Dollars, rebuilt a portion of the Bombing Range to lone connection, that being the new Juniper Canyon Lane. We still need to complete the rest of the road to lone. We have no funds currently of significant importance to those folks in that area. Sand Hollow Road has been upgraded and had preservation work done on over 50 p ercen t o f it however we are finding it impossible to get funding to finish the last 50 percent of that p ro ject. The road however is a very viable route from Heppner to the Hermiston area. We realize that a great deal of traffic from Heppner uses or would use this road if it were in decent c o n d itio n . The C ity o f Lexington while not directly on the Sand Hollow Road, does have access by way of Black H orse C anyon as well." Support for the road levy Letter to the Editor: 1 am w riting this le tte r in support o f the M orrow C ounty Road Department tax levy. Over the past 9 years we have been fortunate enough to do w ork on a su b stan tial num ber o f roads in our system. We have met needs in every area of the county. The projects we have done have all been needed. H ow ever many o th er projects are outstanding as well. The projects we have yet to do include four very large projects. These are the projects referred to in the levy. Without levy dollars these projects will use all of our maintenance dollars. If the levy does not pass that is exactly what we will have to do. We cannot and will not ignore the problems with these roads. This will mean the new road plan w ill ad d ress only those four roads. It will take us another five to six years to get them to a stan d ard that is acceptable and safer. It is appropriately named the Mustang Mop Up. The state of Oregon, and our nation in general, have really stepped up and imposed increased levels of school accountability at all levels.
