Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, April 18,2007 - SEVEN Girl State delegates chosen by lone American Legion Auxiliary Unit #85 Panels donated to the HHS land lab Students from Petra Payne’s World Cultures class visited the Assisted Living Center to perform the Hula. The class recently finished studying the Hawaiian culture. Students are: Aftan Betsinger, Nathan Kennedy, Robbie Smith, Taylor Kempas, and LaTosha Bowles. Heppner Preschool Hop-a-Thon held The Hermiston Branch of Pendleton Grain (¡rowers, Ted Brittner and Nobel Panels donated ten 12’ panels to be used by project/educational anim als at the HHS land lab. The Ag Leadership class worked together with Ted and their teacher, Beth Dickenson to put the pens together. “This opens up new opportunities to kids that don’t have the facilities to care for an animal at home. Raising livestock is a great teaching tool in responsibility, finance, and science,” Dickenson commented. Pictured are Joe Pranger, Beth Dickenson. Eleven members attended. A fter opening the m eeting, club m em bers discussed what breed of pigs they would like and details about picking them up later that weekend. Members also discussed receiving money from the former North Lex Livestock Club and from the Barnyarders Club account since it was split up and members from both of these clubs are now in the new Hog Wild group. Heppner Preschool four and three year-old class es held a Hop-a-Thon to help raise funds for the fight against Muscular Distrophy. The stu d en ts re ceived pledges to raise mon- ey for MDA. Heppner Preschool was the ninth highest fund raiser for MDA in three states. Kylee Svetich and Emily Rietmann have been selected to attend the Ore gon Girls State at Willamette University. This session will be from June 17-23, 2007. Both girls attend lone High School. About 250 of Oregon's most outstanding high school junior girls are expected to attend. Kylee is the daugh ter of Jason and Shilo Svet ich of lone. She is a member of St. Williams Church and youth group and the lone Youth Group. As a member o f these groups she has helped collect food for the needy, worked with Christ mas tree d eliv ery , and worked at the 4 lh of July clean up. Her school activities include: Honor Roll, Writing Award, playing volleyball, basketball and track and field all three years. She has been selected to be on the Home coming Court. She has been active in the Spanish Club, serving as vice-president for two years. As a Student Council member, she is cur rently serving as activity coordinator. She is current ly serving as her class trea surer. Her desire to help others has had her busy vol unteering for the youth track meet. School Carnival, Cy cle O regon fu n d raiser. Stormy Kendrick Memorial and Tracy Finck Fundraiser. She is a m em ber o f the school Yearbook Committee and the In tern atio n al C lub. Her 4-H club and project keeps her busy year around. She is serving as Sgt. at Arms this year. She has served as a 4-H Camp Counselor for three years. Emily Rietmann is the daughter of Joe and Don na Rietmann. She is a mem ber o f lone C om m unity Church and the lone Youth Group. She has helped with the Canned Food Drive and delivery of Christmas trees to raise money for these groups. Her school activities include: N ational Honor Society where she has served as sec.-treasurer, the Inter national Club, Spanish Club, and served as vice-president in the ninth grade. She has played volleyball and basket ball all three years of her high school career. She earned the distinction as captain - all league in her 10"' and 11* grade years. Most Valuable Player and Miss Hustle in the 11lh grade. In basketball, she served as captain in the 1 l lh grade and captain in the All League in the 10lh and U lh grades. H er spare tim e is filled with a 4-H project in the North Lexington Live stock Group. She has donat ed her time as a counselor at 4-H Summer Camp and the Tupper Outdoor School. The American Le gion Auxiliary Girl State is a nationw ide program that stimulates the city, county and state lev els o f government. The program provides the opportunity for high school juniors from throughout the state to be come active participants in the fundamentals of demo c ratic self-g o v e rn m e n t through role-playing. This can include opportunities for public speaking while cam paigning for various public offices, drafting and present ing bills for passage in both the House o f Representa tives and Senate, mock tri als. and solving difficult city problems that reflect real life situations. W ith som e o f the most highly qualified high school juniors from Oregon in attendance, the competi tion was keen at every level.
