Kindergarten ‘round-up’is April 16 A kindergarten “round-up" will be held at Heppner Elementary School Monday, April 16, from noon to 4 p.m. in the gymnasium. While the teachers, Sharon Morris and Michelle Stone, are working with the children, parents will fill out enrollment forms, which will take approximately a half hour. Those planning to attend are asked to call 676-9128 for an appointment. Parents should bring their child’s birth certificate. Social Security number and immunization records. A $3 student body fee may be paid at this time. Anyone who knows of a kindergarten student who needs to register is asked to inform the child's parent of the registration. A memorial service was held Saturday, March 31, 2007, at the New Beginnings Christian Church in H erm iston. A private cremation was held. M rs. Z in d ell was born September 5, 1939, in Kendrick, Idaho, to James B. and N ancy T. R iley Henderson. She graduated from Irrigon High School in 1957. She was married to her husband, Jan Zindell. for 48 years. She en jo y ed camping and fishing with her husband. She w orked for Union Pacific Railroad for 18 years, retiring as a clerk in 1987. Mrs. Zindell was a member of New Beginnings C h ristian F ello w sh ip Church. She is survived by her husband. Jan; daughter, C o lleen C o ttrill; a g ra n d d a u g h ter and a grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Peggy Lee Myers; and a nephew. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston was in charge of arrangements. Debra Lee McMillin Debra Lee “Debbie” McMillin, 41, died Thursday, March 29, 2007, in Irrigon. A funeral service was held Monday, April 2, 2007, at the Bums Mortuary Chapel in Hermiston. Burial follow ed at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Stanfield. Mrs. McMillin was born November 12, 1965, in Hermiston, to Larry Lee and Dene Marlee Johnson Platt. She was raised in Stanfield and graduated from high school there in 1983. While in high school, she as active in the Honor Society. She also swam on the Hermiston swim team. She married George M cM illin in 1987 in Stanfield. They had a son, Jonah Adam McMillin, to jo in her three step-sons, Joshua, Jeremy and Jason. The couple later divorced. M rs. M cM illin worked for many years at Lam b W eston and was working for C B ’s Portable Restroom s in Herm iston. She loved the mountains, an im als and en jo y ed spending time with her many friends. She is survived by her son, Jo n ah , of S pringfield; her parents; siste r Jodi S m ith o f P en d leto n ; one granddaughter; and several aunts and uncles. Jones G raveside service for Floyd R. Jones will be held 10 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2007, at the H ep p n er M asonic C em etery. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. Friday at the Heppner United Methodist Church. Viewing will be held from 2 to 8 p.m . T h u rsd ay at Sw eeney Mortuary. Mr. Jones, 91, o f Heppner, died Monday, April 2, 2007, at his home. He was born D ecem ber 12, 1915, at Heppner, the son of Charles N. and Marvel Miller Jones. He was raised and attended sch o o l at H eppner, graduating from Heppner High School in 1935. On D ecem ber 24, 1938, he married Lorena I. W ilson at P en d leto n , Oregon. The couple started farming in the Alva Jones Rhea Creek Ranch. In 1958 they bought the E m ile Groshen ranch on Hinton Creek. This is still the home ranch where quarter horses, cattle, hay and grain are raised. For many years Australian cattle dogs were an im portant part o f the ranch. Mr. Jones led a 4-H horse club for 14 years. He was a member of the rodeo and fair boards for 30 years, from 1950 to 1980. He also served as president of the Livestock Growers and was an active m em ber o f the Wrangler's Horse Club. He was also a member of the N orthw est C utting Horse Association and the Oregon Cutting Horse Association, the Heppner Elks Lodge and Willow Creek Golf Club. Survivors include daughter, Marcia Sticka and her husband L arry o f Hillsboro, Oregon; sisters, Lois Graybeal of California and Loma Mae Chalfant of Illinois. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorena; son, Greg Jones; brothers, M arcel Jo n es and Paul Jo n es; and sister, Vallis Washburn. Bank of Eastern Oregon, to sponsor one girl from this area to attend Oregon Girls State program on Americanism and government. This year’s session is held at Willamette University in Salem June 17- 23. The funds are used to pay one girl’s lodging, food, and program costs. The program is designed for girls who have completed their junior year in high school and teaches the fundamentals of democracy through the development of a mock government at the city, county and state levels. Coil, Wellman, Miller and Hughes made a trip to Salem to visit with Representative Greg Smith and talk with him about the importance of agricultural education and the funding that is needed to continue the program. “Rep. Smith was very supportive of the FFA and ag education and was pleased to be able to host us at the C a p ito l," said Dickenson. The gro u p co n clu d ed th eir trip by stay in g o v ern ig h t in Newport before returning to j H ep p n er on T uesday o f spring break. “It was a great tim e," said Dickson, who added that she appreciated community members who help to support the chapter and all of its activities.
