February 7,2007 - FIVE M u stan g JV boys sp lit over the w eekend H epp ner JV girls w in tw o By Rick Paullus A fter downing the Union B obcats 45-27 on Friday, F eb ru ary 2, the Heppner Mustang JV boys dropped a hard-fought 49- 48 decision to the visiting Weston-McEwen Tigerscots on Saturday, February 3. The Mustangs, now 14-4 on the year, will end their season at home against the Stanfield Tigers on Friday, February 9. The Mustangs had a narrow 8-7 lead after one in Union, getting four points from Tim H auer, but stretched it to 19-12 at the half. H auer and D aulton W ellm an each had four points in the third as the Mustangs took a 33-21 lead after three. Joe Pranger had four points in the fourth as they continued to pull way for the win. Hauer led the way with 10 points. Sam King added eight points and Bryan Holland had seven points. A g a in st the Tigerscots, King had four points in the first but the Mustangs trailed 10-9 after one, but came back to take an 18-16 lead at the half. Hauer and Braden Britt each had four points in the third, but the Tigerscots tied the game at 33-33 after three. B ritt scored six fo urth- q u a rte r p o in ts but the Tigerscots hit one of two free throws with 12 seconds left to take a one-point lead. The Mustangs had a chance to get the win but two good shots would not fall. Britt had 10 points with Hauer adding seven. Rick Paullus The H eppner Mustang JV girls put two more wins on the board last w eekend by w inning at U nion 51-33 on Friday, February 2, and 53-31 over the W eston-M cE w en T ig ersco ts on Saturday, February 3, at Heppner. The Mustangs, now 16-2 on the year, will wrap up the season at home against Stanfield on Friday, February 9. In U nion, the Mustangs took an 11-2 lead after one, getting six points from Kristen Van Cleave. They extended the lead to 27-11 at the half with five points from Kelsie Fox and four from Van Cleave in the second quarter. Van Cleave had four more in the third as they increased their lead to 38-16 after three. Catherine McElligott had four points and Brynna Rust three in the fourth as they coasted to the win. Van Cleave led the M ustangs with 14 points. Fox added 10 points and McElligott and Rust each had six points. Jessica Hughes and Rust each had five Mustang girls suffer first league loss at Union By Rick Paullus T he H eppner Mustang girls suffered their first B lue M ountain C o n feren ce loss o f the season at Union on Friday, February 2, as the Bobcats pulled away in the fourth quarter for 51-37 win. The Mustangs fell to 10-1 in the BMC and 16-3 overall with the loss. The Bobcats took an 8-6 lead after one and increased it to 24-16 at the half, despite five second- quarter points from Megan Orr. Orr had six points in the third. The Mustangs cut the lead to 34-29 after three with the help of six points from Lyndi Patton. The Bobcats pulled away for the win. Orr had 13 points, six steals, and three assists and Lyndi Patton added 10 points and two steals. Amber Patton had six rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots, Katie Kilkenny had seven rebounds and three assists, and Regi Seitz had two steals. Heppner 6 10 13 8- 37 Union 8 16 10 17-51 Heppner Little League to hold registration and tryouts Registration for the 2007 Heppner Little League season w ill be held on W ednesday, F ebruary 7; Thursday, February 8; and Friday, February 9, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. each night at the Heppner Neighborhood Center. Boys, ages 5-12 and girls 5-14 are eligible to enroll to play T-ball, Minors and M ajors baseball and so ftb a ll. R eg istratio n is required even if the child has played previously and at least one parent or legal guardian must be present. The cost is $30 per child and $60 per family. If this is your child’s first time playing or the league does not have your child’s information from last year, bring three proofs of resid en cy (m u st have physical address) and a copy of your child’s original or sta te -c e rtifie d birth certificate. A driver’s license or utility bill is acceptable documentation. At th is tim e the league is accep tin g applications for coaches and v o lu n te e rs. T his year, a p p lic a n ts w ill need to provide a photo ID/Driver’s License. Tryouts will be held at the following times and places: Major boys baseball - M arch 15 at 4 p.m. at George Waterland Field. Major girls softball - March 15 at 4 p.m. at Bob Kilkenny Field. Minor boy baseball - March 20 at 4 p.m. at Shad Hisler Field Minor girls softball - March 20 at 4 p.m. at Bob Kilkenny Field T-ball will not be having tryouts. Sunday sessions will focus on course work.
