Bob Duke, astronom er for the O regonian, gave a lecture and slide show to a packed crowd at the lone Community Church. He talked about the history of astronomy and telescopes, as well as how to use a telescope to locate constellations in the night sky. Due to a cloudy night, the attendees were unable to take the telescopes outside, but the com puter program that Duke provided was very informative and enjoyed by all. He then answered questions and showed eager students how to use the telescopes. The program was sponsored by LEO (Libraries of Eastern Oregon) and made possible by a grant from NASA. Lyn Craig, president of LEO, reports that this is the largest crowd to attend any of the LEO programs. Craig says that if there is enough interest shown in this area LEO could provide other telescopes. The lone Public Library now has an Astroscan wide field Stargazer Telescope available to be checked out by the public. Stop by the library during regular hours Mondays and Wednesdays 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., or contact Librarian Kristy Crowell. 422-7564. ____________~ Letters to the Editor The Heppner Gazette Times will print all letters to the Editor w tth the following criteria met: letters submitted to the newspaper w ill need to have the name ot the sender along with a legible signature. Pet grievances As one ages it not easy to get o n e’s foot in o n e ’s m outh, but I keep trying. Pet grievances that I harbor include the negativity that is fueling the national scene and promoted by the news media. It would be difficult for any team to win a gam e if m ost o f the sp ec ta to rs were booing them . T hat seem s to be what’s happening with the Iraq situation. Celebrities from both p o litic a l and DA’s Report M orrow C ounty D istrict Attorney Elizabeth Ballard has released the following report: -T h eresa Passm ore was convicted of Assault IV, a class A felony - 12 month bench probation, letter of apology, other num erous conditions, $379 in fines and fees. -Rocky Ryan Gerard, 19, was convicted of Theft in the first degree, a class C felony - 18 m onths supervised p ro b atio n , 80 hours o f com m unity serv ice, and other numerous conditions, $ 1778 in fines and fees. -Gomez Ernesto Vargas, 23, was c o n v icted of h arassm en t, a class B misdemeanor - 90 days in jail with 90 days suspended, one-year bench probation, 20 hours o f com m unity service served within the first six months of probation, and other numerous conditions, $588 in fines and fees. -M artin Domingeaux, 29, was co n v icted of h arassm en t, a class B misdemeanor - 90 days in jail with 90 days suspended, one-year bench probation, 20 hours o f com m unity service to be com pleted within the first six months of p ro b atio n , and o th er numerous conditions, $413 in fines and fees. -James Gary Johnson, 43, was convicted of fail to reg fel sex offender, a class C felony - eight months in jail, post-prison supervision of two years, $528 in fines and fees. entertainment venues have all become experts in military operations, some after only one photo op in a secure Iraq location. This is a sharp contrast to the energy and achievements of people who volunteer with a w illing spirit to improve the communities in which they live. People who were recently selected as first citizens in various communities in the region exem plify what positive energy can do. M oving on w hile attempting to get a foot off the floor, I can understand how Morrow County towns needs more income to keep up with infrastructure costs. H ence they are seeking tippage fee moneys. What about the county road situation? We’ve told there is no money in the budget for major repairs. There’s talk of a road levy for operating money. W ithout having to go to the courthouse I think the public should be better informed on the road budget. It’s said all the improvements on the off-road vehicle park were covered by grants. Does that include employee wages, A-frames, and other improvements? For many the word grant c o n ju re s up “ free m o n ey ” but w h eth er it comes from the state or the federal resources, it's all tax dollars. The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation will receive a $2 million federal grant from the Public W orks Implementation Grant for utility construction costs for a business park. We’ve been told there is n 't enough money to upgrade existing major highways and bridges that urgently need repair, go figure! Unnecessary gymnastics could be lethal, so 1 close with tongue in cheek. (s) Merlyn Robinson Pen pals continued from pu^e / gun if our threat level gets very high. 1 am too high a rank to be a lookout I have some of my soldiers who do that.
