FOUR • Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, November 15,2006 Mustangs knocked out of playoffs in heartbreaker H\ Kick Paullus The 2006 football seaso n cam e to a heartbreaking end as the Lost River Raiders kicked a 43-yard field goal as time ran out to beat the H eppner M u stan g s, 16-13, on Saturday, Nov. 11, in the first round of the US Bank/Les Schw ab OSAA C lass 2A State Championships. The Mustangs, who finished 8-3 on the year, said goodbye to seniors Aaron A llsto tt, R obbie Sm ith. Quinn Feck, Colton Hanson, Casey and Caleb M aben, Ju stin D elv eau x , Ju stin G regory, Kody Lovgren. Tony Haguewood and Zach Kurtz. The Mustangs took the opening kickoff and, starting from their 29-yard line. Lane Bailey ran twice for 20 yards. Matt McCabe ran twice more for 14 yards and a first dow n at the Raiders’ 37-yard line, but a fumbled snap was recovered by Lost River to end the drive. The defense held and the Mustangs took over at the R aiders’ 46-yard line after a short punt. McCabe ran tw ic e for four yards, Casey Maben broke free for 19 yards and a first down at the Lost River 23-yard line, but the Raiders held and took over on downs at their own 13-yard line. The M u sta n g s’ defense held again and they took over at their 46-yard line following a punt and went back to work. Maben ran for four, McCabe for five and Bailey went for two and a first dow n as the first q u arter cam e to an end. McCabe ran twice for seven yards, Maben went for three and another first down, after another first down after an o ffsid e penalty on the Raiders. McCabe ran twice for seven yards and a first down at the 21-yard line. Bailey ran twice for five then took a pass from Quinn Peck nine yards and a first down at the seven. Maben then took it in on his fourth straight rush, the last from the one-inch line for the to u ch d o w n . Tim H auer kicked the extra point to give the M ustangs a 7-0 lead midway through the second quarter. The defense held again and the Mustangs went back to work on offense from th eir 40-yard line. Peck hit Bailey for a 14-yard gain and, on fourth and short, Maben went for four and a first down at the 16-yard line. A fter an incom plete pass, Caleb Maben took it all the way to the end zone on a double reverse. The kick was w ide to the left and the Mustangs took a 13-0 lead into the locker room at the half. The Raiders took the third quarter kickoff and drove dow n the field, scoring on a 19-yard run, but they missed the extra point and the Mustangs still led 13- 6 . The team s traded punts for the rest of the third quarter, then Peck recovered a Lost River fumble at the Heppner 40-yard line to end a R aid er d riv e. The Mustangs returned the favor though as the Raiders’ Omar Baldez picked up a loose ball and went 62 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was good to tie it at 13-13 with 10:30 left in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs took over at their own 20 after the kickoff sailed through the end zone and picked up one first down, but were held and had to punt with the Raiders taking over at their 32-yard line. The defense held and. after an attempted fake punt failed, the M ustangs had good field position at the Lost River 48-yard line. O ne fo urth and short, a fumbled snap gave the Raiders one last chance and the ball at their own 40- yard line with 1:30 left in the game. Two consecutive pass interference penalties on the Mustangs gave the Raiders a shot at the game-winning field goal and they took advantage of it, winning the game.
