Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, November 1,2006 - FIVE The M ustangs got the ball back again after forcing a punt and went back to work as Maben ran for 16 yards, Peck hit K ody Lovgren for a 20-yard gain to the four where Maben took it in for the touchdown. H auer’s kick was good to make it 28-0 late in the first half. They weren’t quite done yet though as the Mustangs got the ball back after a short punt. Caleb Maben ran three times for seven yards and after an o ffsid e penalty on the Outlaws, Hauer booted the 46-yard field goal to end the first half with the Mustangs in control with a 31-0 lead. The Mustangs didn't miss a beat in the second half as they took the kickoff and drove down the field with Casey Maben rushing three tim es for 32 yards then Bailey broke free for a 34- yard touchdown run. Hauer booted the extra point to make it 38-0 early in the third quarter. The M ustangs got the ball back on another interception by Farrens and drove inside the five but a short field goal attempt on a bad angle was just wide and the Outlaws took over. The defen se held again and a bad snap on the punt lost 30 yards before D elveaux jum ped on the fumble. The Mustangs were unable to move the ball though as the Outlaws took o v er on dow ns. By Rick Paullus A 24-point second quarter highlighted by a 46- yard field goal by Tim Hauer, helped the H ep p n er Mustangs to a 41 -6 win over the Enterprise Outlaws on a cold Friday, O ct. 27 in Enterprise in Blue Mountain C o n feren ce play. The Mustangs, 6-0 in the BMC and 7-2 overall, end the re g u la r season at hom e against the Elgin Huskies with the league title on the line. The team s traded possessions to start the game then Robbie Smith jumped on an Outlaw fumble to give the M ustangs good field position at the Enterprise 17- yard line. Lane Bailey went for nine yards, Ju stin Delveaux went for four and after he lost a yard, Bailey took it in from the five for the to u chdow n. H auer kicked the extra point to make it 7-0 midway through the first quarter. The O utlaw s next possession was ended by an RJ Farrens interception and 35-yard retu rn but the M ustangs were unable to capitalize and Enterprise took over on downs. The Mustangs then put together their second scoring drive as Bailey scored again from nine yards out on the first play of the second quarter and after Hauer’s kick was perfect, they increased their lead to 14-0. The d efen se held again and the Mustangs put together another scoring drive as Bailey ran twice for 24 yards then Quinn Peck hit Casey Maben three times for 38 yards, the last one from 12 yards out fo r the touchdow n and H auer kicked the extra point to m ake it 21-0 m idw ay through the second quarter. The Heppner Mustang volleyball team played in the district tournament in Athena on Saturday, Oct. 28. The Mustangs lost the game against Union playing five matches. However, they advanced to the state playoffs with a third place win over Elgin. The state game will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4. A m ber Patton was nam ed to first team All- Conference, while Regi Seitz was chosen to the second team and Whitney Matthews and Megan Orr were given honorable mentions. lone speech team competes in second tournament On Saturday, Oct. 28, m embers of the lone speech and debate team traveled to Hood River for the Apple Cup- a novice tournament consisting of just the lone and Hood River teams. Competing for lone were Tiana Camarillo, Alex Carlson. Kip Krebs. Teonna V andever. Josie M iller, B renna R ietm ann and Christian Cannon. Students competed in a v ariety o f ev en ts. V andever and Krebs competed as a team in the public debate category, as well as C am arillo and Cannon. Miller and Carlson gave oratory speeches, while im prom ptu speakers included Rietmann, Cannon and Krebs. Carlson also did prose reading and Vandever was in the p o etry competition. Miller gave a humorous interpretation and she and Vandever also did a dual in te rp re ta tio n . The com petitors worked hard throughout the day and their efforts paid off. with the team w inning sev eral ribbons. "Even though (the tournament] only consisted of two teams, it was a great experience for the kids and a chance for them to see som e co m p etitio n ,” said lone S peech C oach Jim Raible. “I’m Iwking forward to the next one.” ChessMates seeking volunteer instructors ChessMates chess club is seeking volunteers to help during their after school chess practices. They capitalized this time on the turnover as Hauer booted a 32-yard field goal to make it 41-0 with 8:33 left in the game. The O utlaw s got their touchdown late in the fourth on a 45-yard run. The defense held the Outlaws to 51 yards rushing, eight yards in the first half, with 45 of those on the one play and 61 yards total for the game. Delveaux led the defense with 16 points, with Farrens adding 12 points and Smith 11 points. Bailey and A aron A llstott each had eight points. Casey Maben rushed 12 times for 86 yards and Bailey added 85 yards on nine c arrie s and three touchdowns. Peck was four of 11 passing for 58 yards and a touchdow n w ith no interceptions with Maben catching three for 38 yards.
