The Mustangs, 1 and 2 on the year, begin league play in the newly formed Blue Mountain Conference at Stanfield on Friday. Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.rn. The gam e started out good for the Mustangs as they stopped the Irish on their opening drive, with the help of a Casey Maben tackle behind the line of scrimmage for a four-yard loss and took over at their 48-yard line after a punt. On first dow n. Maben broke free up the middle for a 21-yard gain and again for 15 yards, but a hold brought it back to the 26-yard line. A fter an incomplete pass, Lane Bailey went for four and on third and fifteen, Bailey picked up 17 yards for a first down at the five. Caleb Maben went for four to the one and one fourth down, Quinn Peck got just enough of a push to get to the goal line for the touchdow n. Tim H auer kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead. The Irish responded though and scored on a six- yard touchdown pass and the extra point was good for a 7-7 tie at the end of the first quarter. On the M ustangs next possession, they were unable to move the ball and were forced to punt which w as brought all the way back for a touchdow n, but an illegal block brought it back to the DeSales 26-yard line. The Mustangs held and after the teams traded punts, the Irish had the ball at their own 40-yard line and ended up scoring on a 31- yard screen pass. The kick was no good, but the Irish had 13-7 lead m idw ay through the second quarter. The team s traded punts then trad ed pass interceptions with last one being picked off by peck at the goal line at the end of the first half. The second h alf began as the first one ended as the Mustangs had their opening drive halted by an interception, then Spencer Palm er picked off a pass inside the five to end an Irish drive. The M ustangs put together small drive as Matt McCabe ran twice for four yards, Casey Maben went three times for 18 yards and Peck hit Bailey for a seven- yard gain, but it stalled from there and were forced to punt. The team s traded punts again as the third quarter ended with the Irish still leading 13-7. The Irish recovered a fumbled punt at the Heppner 32-yard line, but Peck picked off a pass and went 70 yards before being drug down at the one. Casey Maben ran it in on first down and Hauer’s kick was perfect and the Mustangs had a 14-13 lead, with 8:45 left in the game. The wheels came off for the Mustangs though as a ldng kick retu rn and facemask penalty gave the Irish a first down at the Mustangs 27-yard line and they went on to score on a three-yard run and a two- point conversion pass made it 21 -14 Irish with 7:45 left. The Mustangs were pinned deep on their own ten after the kick-off and an illegal block took it back to the three. Casey Maben ran twice for five yards then McCabe broke free for a 29- yard gain and a face mask penalty took it out to the 49- yard line. After a holding penalty, the Irish picked off a shovel pass and took it back 31 yards for a touchdown. The extra point kick was good and now the Irish led 28-14 with 4:24 left. On th eir en su in g possession, the M ustangs fum bled w ith the Irish recovering at the 32-yard line and went on to score on a 13-yard pass with less than a minute left for the final score. Maben finished with 66 yards on 14 carries with McCabe rushing for 49 yards Quarterback Quinn Peck (#10) makes a pass. on eight carries. The girls started out strong beating Sherm an C ounty and P ortland Christian in two out of three game matches to 15 points. After sitting out a game, the girls then played Glenwood, who they lost to. The last team they played in their pool was Condon and they beat them, making Heppner #1 in their pool. The cham pionship game between the pools was the last game of the day and it was Heppner vs. Weston- McEwen. Heppner ended up losing to Weston-McEwen in two games to 25 points. A com m unity that has seen a lot of changes recen tly is ab o u t to experience one more. The Lexington Baptist Church has invited Kevin Hodges to become their full time pastor. Starting Sept. 24, 2006, P asto r H odges w ill be leading the worship service on a regular basis. “I am looking forw ard to this opportunity,” said Pastor Hodges. Everyone is invited to come and meet Pastor Hodges at the church located at 170 B Street. Sunday School starts at 9:45 a.m., followed by worship service at 11 a.m. Pastor Hodges was raised in Central Oregon and after serving in the military, he and his family moved back to O regon. They moved to Eastern Oregon in August of 1998 and have been loving it ever since. Pastor Hodges’ wife Holly and their four children will be adding to the life and excitement at the church. “I should stress that referring to them as c h ild ren is m isle a d in g ,” ex p lain ed P astor H odges. His youngest daughter is still a minor, but the other three are all adults in their own right. They have all been extremely supportive and are excited abou^ the resp o n sib ility being undertaken. “It is my belief that every person in the church is in full time ministry and should be finding ways of fulfilling that responsibility,” said Pastor Hodges. After realizing that he was being led to participate in sharing God's message, he enrolled in a Christian college. It is his intent to com plete a master’s degree through the C h ristian C o lleg e and Sem inary to be b etter p rep ared fo r the ¡MP» o p p o rtu n itie s and . resp o n sib ilities that this church offers.
