Heppner community helps reduce the risk of stroke Residents living in and around the H eppner community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke. Life Line Screening will be at the St. Patrick’s Senior Center on Sept. 5. The site is located at 182 N. M ain in H eppner. Appointments will begin at 11 a.m. A stro k e, also known as a “brain attack,” is ranked as the third leading killer in the world and the second am ong w om en. T hrough p rev en tiv e screenings, the risk of having a stroke can be greatly reduced. Screenings are fast, painless and low cost. They involve the use of ultrasound technology and scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries, which can lead to a stroke; aortic aneurysms, which can lead to a ruptured aorta; and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which are a strong predictor of heart disease. Also offered for men and women, is a bone density screening to assess their risk for osteoporosis. Each screen in g requires 10 minutes or less to com plete. S. Army Corps o f E n g in eers-m an ag ed reservoirs in the Columbia, Willamette and Rogue river b asin s, the agency has announced. E f f e c t i v e im m ediately, the ban in clu d es the use o f any “airborne towables,” which are defined as inflatable re c rea tio n a l d ev ices designed to go airborne with a rider while being towed by a boat, whether or not they are specifically marketed as kite tubes. The e ffe cted reservoirs are: Willow Creek in M orrow C o u n ty ; Applegate and Lost Creek in and Detroit in Marion/Linn County; Blue River, Cottage G rove, C ougar, D exter, Dorena, Fall Creek, Fern R idge, H ills C reek and L ookout Point in Lane County; Foster and Green Peter in Linn County. A d d itio n ally , the Corps is restricting use of the devices in the pools created by Bonneville, The Dalles and John Day dapis on the Columbia River. P o rtlan d D istric t Commander Col. Thomas O ’ Donovan imposed the ban because of the high potential for serious injuries caused by uncontrolled flight of these devices, posing risks to the rider, as well as to others who may be in the area. D A’s Report The Morrow County DA’s office reports handling the following business: Crystal Irene Glass was convicted of Possession of a Controlled Substance 2, a Class C felony. Her driver's license was suspended for six months and she was sentenced to 18 months supervised probation, 30 days in jail, 80 hours of community service and payment of $1528 in fines and fees. William Eugene Stolz was convicted of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, a Class C felony. He was sentenced to 18 months supervised probation, 30 days in jail and payment of $ 1053 in fines and fees and $228 in restitution. Local resident graduates from Pacific University Shelley Rietmann, of H eppner, receiv ed a bachelor’s degree in exercise scien ce from P acific University on May 20. Irrigon am bulance received a report that a 30- year-old m ale was lying partially in the road and was u n re sp o n siv e and not m oving. It was unknown whether he was breathing or not. M CSO cited Gregoria Mencia Mota, 34, for No Operator’s License, Open Container and Failure to Y ield to E m ergency Vehicle. He was also cited for Refusal of Breath Test. He was lodged at Umatilla County Jail. MCSO cited Robert H. S te e lh o ff, 61, for Violation of the Basic Rule, 81 mph in a 55 mph zone. M CSO received a report from a caller in Irrigon o f tw o fem ale ju v e n ile shoplifters being detained after filing their purses with merchandise. The juveniles were cited for Theft. M CSO received a rep o rt from a c a lle r in Heppner that a male child was bit by a dog on the right thigh w hile cam p in g at Anson W right Park. The child had ran past the camp site w here the dog was chained and through the area of the dog's reach. An adult female was also severely bitten on the calf by the same dog, prior to deputy arrival. The subjects were headed by private vehicle to Pioneer M em orial H ospital with pressure bandages. M CSO did a field interview of a vehicle parked at the Boardman Napa Store and it was determined to be the newspaper lady waiting fo r the p ap ers to be delivered. M CSO received a report from a caller in Irrigon stating that her food stamp card was stolen at the Irrigon Watermelon Festival.
