Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 10,2006 - THREE Mustangs drop two to Bulldogs Mustangs sweep Tigerscots By Rick Paullus By Rick Paullus T he H ep p n er Mustang baseball team had a 5-1 lead in the first game and a 7-2 lead in the second, but couldn’t hang on as the H erm iston B ulldog JV s came back to win 7-5 in the first and 12-8 in the second on Friday, May 5 in non league games in Heppner. The Mustangs, now 7 and 2 in the CBC and 8 and 9 overall, will host Pilot Rock on Friday, May 12 at 1 p.m., for a key doubleheader to end the regular season. The Bulldogs scored first in the top of the second inning in the opener, but the M ustangs responded with five runs in the bottom half. A ndre R auch dou b led , Robbie Smith walked, Dan Basile had an RBI single, Nathan Kennedy singled, Tony Bolin reached on an error to bring home a run, Colton Hanson had an RBI double, Quinn Peck had an RBI double and Bolin scored on a wild pitch. T hat w as all the offense they could muster though as the Bulldogs came back to tie it in the fourth and took the lead in the sixth to take the win. Basile and Peck each went two for three and Bolin went two for four. In the second game, the Bulldogs again took an early lead with a run in the first, but the Mustangs tied it in the bottom half when Bolin led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on an error. By Rick Paullus Seven good innings on the mound by sophomore Andre Rauch and one good inning of offense helped the Heppner Mustangs baseball team shutout the visiting U m atilla V ikings 5-0 on Tuesday, May 2 in Columbia Basin Conference play. The M ustangs, 7 and 2 in the CBC and 9 and 8 overall, have a key doubleheader at home against the Pilot Rock Rockets on Friday, May 12 at 1 p.m., before entering district tournament play. The Vikings' Marc E strad a had kept the Mustangs in check through four innings before their bats finally woke up in the fifth. Nathan Kennedy led off with a sin g le, K yle C arlson reached on an infield single and Ben McCarl was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tony Bolin reached on an error to score Kennedy and Colton Hanson laid down a p e rfe ct sq u eeze bunt to score Carlson before Dan Basile blasted a three-run homerun to center field to make it 5-0. Rauch took care of the rest as he finished with four strikeouts, one walk and allowed just two hits for the complete game win. Kennedy went two for three, Basile was one for three with three RBI and Bolin went one for three with a double. Mustang JVs lose at Hermiston By Rick Paullus The H ep p n er Mustang JV baseball team took one on the chin as they lost to the Hermiston Frosh 12-2 in five in n in g s on M onday, M ay 1 in Hermiston. The Mustangs, now 5 and 4 on the year, will be at home against Umatilla on Thursday, May 4 and will finish out the year at the P endleton Frosh on Thursday, May 11 at 4 p.m. The M ustangs trailed 5-0 b efo re they scored their only two runs in the top of the third when Sam King singled with two out, Ben McCarl walked, both runners moved up on a throwing error and Nacho E lg u ezab al drove them home with a single. The M ustangs had the bases loaded in the fifth, but couldn’t come up with the key hit when they needed it. Justin Archer went two for three to get the Mustangs other two hits as they could muster just four hits for the game.
