W illow C reek Sym phony and W illow Creek Singers, along with Wallowa Valley Orchestra will perform together for the first time in this concert. The groups are conducted by R. Lee Friese of Athena who is M usic D ire c to r and C o n d u cto r o f Inland Northwest Musicians. He is joined for this concert by a sso c ia te c o n d u cto rs Anthony Marks of LaGrande who is music teacher at Elgin and by Dane Mickelson of Wallowa, music teacher in the Wallowa Schools. W illow C reek Sym phony and W illow Creek Singers rehearse in Heppner and Wallowa Valley Orchestra in Wallowa. They met in Pendleton for a pair o f jo in t re h e a rsa ls in preparation for the concert. A seco n d performance by the groups will be presented at the high school in Elgin on Sunday, April 23, at 4 p.m. S p o n so rs fo r the concerts include Louis and Betty Carlson, Rawhide and R ubies Salon and W.C. Construction. Concerts by Inland N o rth w e st M u sician s ensembles are always free to the public, with donations accepted. Michelle Wright of Sterling Medicare will be on hand during the April 26 meal to explain and discuss M ed icare Part D (prescription drug plan) with all present. The deadline to sign up for Part D is May 15. Wright is prepared to offer in fo rm atio n and answ er questions. Sterling Medicare is providing the ice cream for the noon meal. A bus trip to Ukiah for lunch at their new center is scheduled for Friday, April 27, according to Ed Baker, bus coordinator. Departure will be shortly after 10 a.m. Be sure to sign up in the center office. The residents and center staff are working hard to restore apartm ents and other spaces after the water dam age from the recent rains. Ellis M cRoberts is staying at the Northwestern Motel until his apartment repair is complete. Della Burch is the re sid e n t we w ant to introduce to our readers this w eek. She m oved to Heppner four years ago from M olalla. She en jo y s the p eo p le, the tow n and especially living in her Main Street apartment. You can see her often “■putting” to the post office and other places on her motorized chair, with Star, her little dog. She was a cook at Foster Home Care, located in Portland, before coming to Heppner. She has a son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren. She has been a widow since age 37. Before that, she and her late husb an d w ere g iv en an award for being outstanding foster parents. They often had four foster children at a time, 13 total. Spanish classroom gets facelift from local seamstress ¡à i Murl Rogers and Petra Payne display new cupboard curtains Rogers made for the HHS Spanish classroom. M url “ S tu b b y ” Rogers, a resident at Willow Creek Terrace for the last two years, an accomplished seamstress, recently created cupboard curtains for the Petra Payne's Heppner High School Spanish classroom. R ogers also em b ro id ers p illo w cases, which she gifts to family, and has created curtains for her nephew’s camp trailer. She is also active around the Terrace mending garments and sewing on buttons. She is also the official “sewing machine runner” when the Terrace has craft projects that require sewing. Rogers said she got the nickname “Stubby” from her husband because he said she was always so stubborn. Rogers has extended family that lives in lone. Three-man scramble to be held at WCCC tournament is $35 per player. First through third place prizes, net and gross, will be awarded. There will also be tee prizes for every hole. KP and long putt prizes will also be awarded. Lunch will be served following play. U ntil fu rth er n o tice, the future board meetings will also be held there. The board meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. H ig h lig h ts o f the meeting included discussion on the pending tournaments scheduled through the end of May. Special attention was placed on the plans for the second an n u al B en efit Tournament scheduled for April 23. Discussion was also held on the changes being made on the course design with the new trees being planted (trees donated by the lone H orticultural C lass). F in a n c ia ls w ere reviewed. The board was also in fo rm ed that the spraying of the course is on hold until the weather clears up and discussion followed on the creek erosion, with the high water from all the rain and run off. A pro-shop/ club house em ployee was approved for hire and will begin regular hours in May. Discussion was held, by the board, on restricting local members that are delinquent in the 2006 dues. L ocal residents (telephone prefix code- 676, 989 and 422) must be a member of WCCC in order to play the course. Green fees are allowed for our out of area guests. The board decided that as o f April 15, until member dues are paid for the current year, they will not be allowed to play the course until they are brought current. The next b o ard meeting will be held May 9 in the clubhouse. Members are encouraged to attend. New watermaster hired in Lower John Day Basin Joel Clark has been hired as the new watermaster for the District 21 office of the Oregon Water Resources Department in the Lower John Day Basin and Willow C reek D rainage. C lark replaces Vem Church who has moved to Klamath Falls to continue his career as watermaster in District 17. Clark and his wife, Lisa, moved from Moscow, ID where they were both working and attending the University of Idaho. Clark is nearing completion of his master’s degree in watershed management and earned his bachelor of science degree in environmental science from Mercer University in Macon. GA. For the past three years. Clark has also worked for the US Forest Service as a forestry technician and civil e n g in e e rin g te c h n ic ia n studying runoff and erosion in forested catchm ents in northern Idaho. C lark filled the w aterm aster p o sitio n on March 20, 2006. Joel and Lisa are enjoying the pace of life living in Condon and look forward to becoming in v o lv ed in the local com m unity.
