(s) Larry and Betty Mills Heppner To the Editor: In the beginning, the O regon In te rn a tio n a l Speedw ay seem ed like a very remote possibility. I regarded the project as an “I’ll believe it when I see it” type of project. Then, as the project moved forward, I changed from re g a rd in g it w ith disbelief to thinking about it w ith sk e p tic ism as to whether it would, in fact, be a good thing for Morrow County. A lot of my doubt was p ro m p ted by my incorrect perception that the project would involve only one large race track with one two or three races a year. I did not see how this could translate into permanent, full time, family wage jobs. Then, I learned that the project would include a variety of activity centers with a multitude of events taking place throughout the year. Thus, the employees of the speedway project would have regular, good paying jobs. C onsequently, my feelings about the speedway p ro je c t ch an g e d to enthusiastic and unqualified support. This position was further reinforced by the state of the Morrow County econom y, esp e c ially the south c o u n ty and the c o m m u n itie s o f lo n e, L exington and H eppner. T h ese c o m m u n itie s are hurting and the spin-offs from the speedway will be a significant benefit to the well being of the south county communities. So. 1 encourage all registered voters in Morrow C o u n ty to rally to the support o f the speedw ay project and vote in favor of the excise tax in May.
