Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 1,2006 - THREE Ione ends state playoff with two- Mustang girls end season at Nyssa HHS announces 2006 golf By Rick Pauilus schedule point loss A two-foot jum per with seven seconds on the clock gave the Damascus Christian Eagles the lead for the first time in two quarters but it was perfect timing to win the “win or stay home” state p la y o ff gam e held Saturday night in Damascus against the determined lone Cardinals. The bucket gave the Eagles a 48-46 edge and dealt a heartbreaking loss to the senior-laden lone squad. The game was close from the start with five ties and eight lead changes in the first half. The largest lead either team could manage in the early going was six points, held by Damascus with a minute left in the first quarter. Tony Bolin hit two big threes to open the second p erio d but the E agles responded, score for score. With 1:05 left before the half, Bolin hit a bucket and Kelly Thom pson scored a free throw to send the Cards to the locker room leading 27- 24. Tyler Brown scored nine of his 15 points in the third quarter, giving the Cards an eight point lead, their biggest lead of the night midway through the period. However, the momentum shifted on a couple of calls that went the Eagle’s way and Damascus fought back to tie the score on a reverse lay-up at the buzzer, 36-36. If the third quarter b elo n g ed to B row n, it looked like the fourth was going to be Bolin’s as he made six unanswered points to start the quarter, building the Cards a six-point lead. With 5:08 remaining in the game, the Card's Nik Kamp fo u led h u rtin g the lone d efen siv e effo rt and sw inging the m om entum back to the Eagles. The Eagles put back an offensive rebound to pull within four then hit three of four free throws to narrow the lead to one. With 2:12, Bolin made tw o free throw s but Damascus responded with another put-back followed by a huge three pointer to take the lead. Tyler Brown hit a pair of free throws to tie up the game again, 46 all with 53 seconds remaining. A time out was called as the Cards brought the ball down the flo o r and sent the inbounds to the opposite end of the court. The hands-on, claw in g d efen se o f the Damascus team forced the Cardinals into one last and fatal turnover that allowed Damascus to win the game. The C ardinals had some trouble throughout the game with the aggressive d e fe n se p lay ed by D am ascus. “ In the North Casco league, they let the team s play,” said Bolin. “T h a t’s why we play the b ig g e r sch o o ls like Hermiston to try to prepare for it.” Bolin had a game high 19 p o in ts, w hich in clu d ed four big three pointers and eight o f 10 points in the fourth quarter. Brown scored 15 points, including all points scored in the third quarter. Thompson added 12, 10 coming from the free throw line on 10 of 13 shooting. “ I th o u g h t lone cam e and played a great g a m e ,” said D am ascus C hristian coach, Michael Mai. “We told our guards going in that they had to be ready to put som e shots down and they did. We were lucky to come out of this ahead.” The seniors on the Cardinals squad obviously had a different outcome in m ind. “ Everyone played th e ir h a rd e st,” said Thompson. “It was a very physical game.” B row n who wrapped up a sensational basketball career at lone noted that the Eagles played very tough defense. “It was hard to get a shot off. They were getting better looks and were more consistent in their shooting,” he said. A l t h o u g h disappointed. Coach Dennis Stefani found some positive aspects. “I’m proud of the kids. They played as hard as they could. Losing Nik hurt us and we asked a lot of Kip K rebs who is ju s t a sophomore. They knew the in sid e gam e was our w eak n ess and took advantage of it.” lone 10 17 9 10-46 Damascus Christian 13 11 12 12-48 lone- Thom pson 1 10-13 12, Brown 6 3-4 15, Bolin 6 3-5 19, Walton 0 0- 1 0, Krebs 00-10, Kamp and Long. 3-pts: Bolin 4.
