Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 1,2006 - THREE Cardinal JVs win two over weekend Cardinals split over weekend The lone boys’ JV team recorded tw o wins over the weekend, downing Condon-Wheeler, 31-25, in lone on Friday, Jan. 27 and squeaking past C ascade Locks, 56-53, on the road Saturday, Jan. 28. A 12-5 first quarter got the Cardinals the lead they needed to get past C o n d o n -W h eeler as the teams played close to even after that. The score was 19- 11 at the half and 25-16 after three. C o n d o n -W h eeler outscored lone 9-6 in the final period but couldn’t get any closer than the final margin of six points. C lay M orter was high point scorer for the game with 10 points. Also scoring for lone was Justin A rcher w ith six, D erek Davidson and Cory Peterson with four each, W illiam Wehrli with three and Matt Coleman and Kevin Fowler with two each. The C ards scored big on the boards, outrebounding the Knights 39-25. led by Cory P e te rso n ’s 10 rebounds. M orter and Fowler added eight each. A rch er and William Bergstrom paced the team with two assists each and Morter recorded four steals. Coach Jim Swanson noted that the game wasn’t as pretty as some of their other outings. “The kids had a hard time getting the ball to drop. They won this game on d e fe n se ,” he said. Swanson noted that Cory Peterson had an outstanding effort with 10 rebounds. “1 really enjoy his 110 percent effort especially against players who are taller than he is.” Playing at Cascade Locks on Saturday, the JV team had two big quarters and two ice-cold quarters but pulled together in the fourth quarter for the narrow three-point victory. The Cardinals trailed 13-7 after one period but ran off 26 points, 11 points from Paul Hams, in the second quarter to grab the lead 33- 24 at halftime. The Pirates outscored the Cards 13-4 in the third to knot the score 37 all after three, lone dug deep in the fourth, outscoring their opponent 19-16 for the win. The JV team is 7-1 in league play, 9-6 overall. Three Cards scored in double figures led by Clay M o rter w ith 15, D erek Davidson with 13 and Paul Hams with 11. Also scoring for lone was Cory Peterson with eight, Kevin Fowler with four, Justin Archer with three and Dalton Campbell with three. P eterso n had another huge night on the boards with 12 rebounds as lone had a hard-fought 33- 23 rebounding advantage. Also helping out was Morter with six and Fowler with five. Davidson led the team with four steals and Archer led with five assists. C oach Sw anson com m ended P e te rs o n ’s game with 12 rebounds and eight points as well as noting the all around good play of Morter, Davidson, Archer and Fow ler. “ A lso Paul H a m s’ 11 p o in ts in the second quarter was a great spark for the team," he said. “The kids are very energetic and fun to watch,” he added. “When you play a team like Cascade Locks, you need to stay in control and we were able to do that.” Pony girls’ A team wins two and loses one The Heppner Pony g irls’ A team traveled to Helix on Jan. 28, to compete in the Helix Tournament. The Ponies faced the lone Cardinals in their first game. The Ponies came out w ith strong d efen siv e intensity and led 22-4 at the half. In the second half, the Ponies held lone to only two points and won the game 37- 6. Catherine McElligott and Jessica Hughes both scored in double figures for the Ponies. Four other Ponies also scored in the game. The Ponies faced the Echo C ougars in th eir second game. The Ponies led the entire game and won 43- lb . E rin P rice and McElligott each scored 12 points in the game. Hughes added 9 points in the win. Coach Melissa Coiner said, “C ath erin e m ade her presence felt today. She was g rab b in g re b o u n d s and scoring points w hen we needed them.” In their final game, the Ponies faced the Helix Grizzlies. The Ponies had lost twice to the Grizzlies and w anted rev en g e. It w asn't to be. The Ponies cam e out flat and the Grizzlies took advantage of costly turnovers and poor defense. Helix led 21 -4 at the half. In the second half, the P onies step p ed up th eir defensive pressure and held Helix to only two points, but the deficit was too large to overcom e and the Ponies lost 15-23. Price led the team with 10 points. Coiner said, “I was impressed with the way that Erin played today. These were break-out games for her. She was passing the ball re a lly w ell today. S h o o tin g w oes co n tin u ed to plague the Cardinals against Condon Wheeler as the Cards shot 27 p ercen t from the field compared to 45 percent for the Knights. After trailing early in the game, lone came back to lead at the end of one q u a rte r 14-13. C ondon Wheeler outscored lone 10- 6 in the low-scoring second period to lead 23-20 at the half. A fter the break, the Knights poured in 20 points to lo n e ’s 10 to build an nearly insurmountable lead, 43-30 after three before coasting home for the 58-38 win. Dan Long led the Cardinals in scoring with 10 points. Kelly Thompson had eight and Nik Kamp had six. The Knights held a 32-26 rebounding edge over the Cards. For lone, Nik Kamp and Kip Krebs led the way with six boards each. “Once again, we had troubles shooting the ball,” said Coach Dennis Stefani. “I keep waiting for all of this to change. We just have to stay positive and I know things will come around for us.” T he C ard in als headed to Cascade Locks on Saturday, knowing that it is N N ER iNK The Heppner Pony g irls’ B team traveled to Helix on Jan. 28, to compete in the Helix Tournament. The girls played two games and finished the day with one win and one loss. In their first game, the Ponies faced the Echo Cougars. The Ponies had p re v io u sly b eaten the Cougars, but this time Echo got the best of the Pony team. Echo won the game 22-16. Seven Ponies scored in the game. Julia Meyer and Carrie Haguewood led the team with three points each. In th e ir second game, the Ponies faced the Helix Grizzlies. The Ponies fell behind in the first half but pulled ahead in the second half behind tough defensive pressure. The Ponies won the game 25-14. Again, the P onies had a b alan ced sco rin g attack . B rooke Thompson led the team with seven points and Natalie Rauch added four. Coach Keith Price w as p leased w ith the balanced scoring output. “We have been struggling this season to score the ball, and we had ten girls score for us today,” said Price. Only a very few are chosen to atten d this extraordinary and rare event. However, this HHS students needs your help to pay the $750 tuition. Johnson is hosting a spaghetti feed, 6-8 p.m., on Tuesday, Feb. 7, during the H eppner versus W eston- McEwen basketball game at Heppner High School. The cost is $5 per plate and each plate will include spaghetti, salad (with salad dressing), rolls, dessert, coffee and punch. It will be held in Mrs. Gentry’s room near the gym. At the spaghetti feed there will be boxes if you would like to donate used soda bottles and cans. The Heppner High School Class of 1986 will be holding their 20-year class reunion July 21-23. The Heppner Junior/ Senior High School Booster Club meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8. The meeting will be held in the high school home-ec room. The M ustangs dropped to 9 and 9 on the year and will be at Pilot Rock on Friday, Feb. 3 and back at home on Saturday to face the Irrigon Knights. At U m atilla, the Mustangs trailed by one after the first quarter at 6-5, but managed just two points in the second and trailed 14-7 at the half. The V ikings continued to pull away in the second half to take the win. Maggie Armato led the M u stan g s w ith four p o in ts, w ith S tep h an ie Cutsforth and Melissa West each adding three points. On Saturday, both teams had a hard time finding the basket as the Huskies led 4-2 after one and 12-10 at the half, despite six points from W hitney M atthews. Sarah Milner had four points in the third, but the Huskies extended their lead to 26-20 and they made nine of 16 free throws in the fourth to hang on for the win. From the beginning, the Cards were in the hole, trailing 13-8 after one, 24- 21 at the half, and 33-31 a fte r th ree. In the final period, lone outscored the Pirates 20-17 but it was a last second tip -in by K elly Thom pson that gave the Cards the thrilling win. “ Kelly Thom pson, Tyler Brown and Tony Bolin p lay ed w ith great d e te rm in a tio n ,” said a ssista n t co ach , Jim Swanson. “They were not going to let this one slip by.” Sw anson also noted that B row n’s inbound pass to Thom pson leading to the w in n in g b u ck et “ was perfect.” Thom pson led the Cardinals in scoring with 16 points. Brown added 14 and Dan Long had eight. B ro w n ’s nine rebounds, helped along by seven each from Thompson, B olin and Long, led the C ard in als to a 38-26 rebounding edge. Thompson paced the team with six assists in the contest. “The main thing was that they never gave up and seemed to be in sync better that I have seen them play in the last four games,” said Swanson. “Plus I think they were all feeling better after a round of sickness. The M ustangs, now 10 and 3, will be at Pilot Rock on Friday, Feb. 3 and back at home on Saturday to face the Irrigon Knights. The Mustangs took a 13-6 lead after one at Umatilla, getting five points, including a 3-pointer, from Lane Bailey, but the Vikings came back to tie it at 21-21 at the half. The Vikings took a 34-31 lead after three, despite six points, including a 3-pointer, from Justin Delveaux but the Mustangs rallied in the fourth, getting 10 points from Bailey and four from Nacho Elguezabal to take the narrow win. Bailey finished with 15 points, with Delveaux and Elguezabal each adding eight points. On Saturday, the Mustangs jumped out to an 18-8 lead over the Huskies after one. getting 10 points from Elguezabal and four each from Delveaux and Andre Rauch. Nathan Van Cleave had four points in the second, but the H uskies came back to cut the lead to 24-20 at the half. Bailey had five points and Elguezabal and Sam King each had four points as the Mustangs led 42-38 after three. Delveaux and King each had four points in the fourth as they pulled away for the win. Elguezabal led the way with 17 points, with King adding 10 p o in ts. Delveaux and Rauch each finished with eight points.
