FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, January 11,2006 H eppner basketball Ione JV boys take two solid wins The lone boys’ JV team collected two solid w ins ov er the w eekend, defeating Helix on the road Friday, Jan. 6, and downing Central Christian at home on Saturday, Jan. 7. Five C ard in als recorded double figures and all players but one got in the scorebook at Helix as the team roared to a 78-36 victory. The Cards opened a 15-2 lead after one and kept it coming, scoring 22 in the second, 23 in the third and 18 in the fourth quarter for the final margin of victory. Leading the Cardinal scorers was Derek Davidson with 14, followed by Cory P eterson w ith 13, C lay Morter and Kevin Fowler with 11, Justin Archer with 10, William Bergstrom with six. M att C olem an and William Wehrli with four each, Kyle Palmateer and Dan Long with two each and Dalton with one. Archer led the team in assists w ith three but Michael Mayer, a German e x ch an g e stu d en t and relative new com er to the game, brought the crowd to life with his two assists. P eterson g rab b ed seven rebounds to lead the team, and he and M orter each nabbed six steals to lead that category. Wehrli had two blocked shots. Coach Jim Swanson was pleased with team effort. “All of them played with a lot of unselfishness. They ran the floor well and rebounded great,” said Swanson. He noted that Cory Peterson had a fine all-around game and played w ith a trem en d o u s am ount o f hustle. Playing at home for the first time in a month, the JVs picked up where they left off the night before, jumping out to a 24-5 point first q u a rte r lead over visiting Central Christian. The pace cooled a bit in the photos by Sandy Matthews second quarter but the Cards still m aintained a 32-10 halftime lead. lone came out smoking again in the third p erio d , o u tsco rin g the o p p onent 17-9, before coasting home with the 56- 34 victory. Justin Archer led the team with 10 points followed by Morter and Long with nine each, Davidson with eight, Fowler with six, Coleman with five, Peterson with four, and Campbell with three. Dan Long dished out four assists while he and Peterson each had four steals and Morter grabbed seven rebounds to lead the team. Coach Swanson said he was pleased with the outing, praising the team’s defense, fast breaks and "great teamwork.”. He also noted that Derek Davidson and Justin A rcher had a. good showing pressuring the backcourt. Sherilyn Peck is fouled by the Umatilla Vikings. The Vikings win 53-51 in a last minute free- throw Friday night. Lady Cards win two over weekend The lone Lady Cardinals got their league season off to a good start, winning two games over the weekend. The wins bring their overall record to 5-4. Playing in the packed Helix gym on Friday night, Jan u ary 6, the Lady Cardinals and the Grizzlies were locked in a tight game until lone finally put them away in the fourth quarter. H elix led 16-13 after one quarter but the Cards took a slim 28-26 lead lone boys number one in poll The lone High School boys' basketball team is ranked the number one team in the OACA/OBCA poll as of January 9. In the third quarter, lone stretched out to a 10- point lead but watched it slip back to six at the end of the period, 48-42. But it was the stretch run that made the difference as lone poured in 17 points to Helix’s four in the fourth quarter to make the final score 65-46. Ashly Grams scored 28 points and Jenny Griffith added 22 to lead the team. Also scoring for lone were A m ber Patton with five, Kylee Svetich and Emily Rietmann with three each, and Stephanie Holland and Kayla LaRue with two each. “This was a good way to start our league play,” said coach Ryan Rudolf. “ Ashly and Jenny really played well tonight. 1 though we played good defense and really out-ran them in the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter.” The Lady Cardinals hosted Central Christian on Saturday, easily running away from their opponents, 60-19. The Cards strung together quarters of 13, 14, 22 and 11 points, using the opportunity to spread out playing time. Jenny Griffith led the team in scoring w ith 15 points. She also had five rebounds, two assists and four steals. Ashly Grams had 11 points, nine steals, six rebounds, and four assists and Kayla LaRue recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Amber Patton had 10 points, seven b o ard s and th ree steals. Stephanie Holland had 13 rebounds in the game as well as two points. Emily Rietmann didn’t score but had eight rebounds, eight assists and five steals. “We had four girls in double figures and everyone got to play, especially my y o u n g er p la y e rs ,” said Coach Ryan Rudolf. The Grizzlies led at the end of the first quarter, but the Lady C ard in als fought back to take the lead by two at the half. The Lady Cardinals continued to lead in the third quarter, and really pulled away in the fourth. A shly G ram s and Jenny Griffith combined for 50 points, Grams with 28 and Griffith with 22. Also chipping in for the Lady C ard in als w ere A m ber Patton w ith five points, Emily Rietmann with three, Stephanie Holland with two, and Kayla LaRue with two. No 1 ranked Cards win 2 By Luke Bradfield On Friday, January 6, the number-one ranked lone Cardinals traveled to Helix to play the Grizzlies for their first league game and defeated the Grizzlies, 49-30. K elly Thom pson pitched in 13 points, Paul Hams had 10, Tony Bolin, four, Nick Kamp one, and John Walton, one.
