SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 21,2005 Mustang Boys Split at Harrisburg Tournament By Rick Paullus After just two practices due to the long run on the football play-offs, the Heppner Mustang varsity boys went to the Harrisburg tournament and split two games taking third place on Friday, Dec. 9 and Saturday, Dec. 10. On Friday they ran into a very good Santiam Christian team and lost 70-44 but came back on Saturday taking a 40-34 win over Reedsport. The Mustangs fell behind 11 -4 after one and 29-15 at the half but got 12 points from matt VanCleave in the third to get within ten at 45-35 but the Eagles ran away in the fourth taking the win. Rory Kilkenny led the Mustangs with 16 points with VanCleave adding 12 points and Mikel Britt adding seven. Mustangs start CBC with two wins The Heppner Mustang boys got off to a good start to the Columbia Basin Conference by winning their first two gam es on Friday, D ecem ber 16, and Saturday, December 17. On Friday, they won at Irrigon, 73-20, and came home on Saturday taking a narrow, 56-53, win over the Culver Bulldogs. The Mustangs will be at the Camas, WA, tournament on Wednesday, December 28, and Thursday, December 29, before getting back into CBC play the following weekend. The Mustangs fell behind the Knights, 6-0, before Rjory Kilkenny, with a little over four minutes left in the first quarter, finally got them on the board. Matt McCabe scored off a drive. Kilkenny scored six more and Matt Kenny scored off a steal to give them a 12-8 lead after one. Matt Van Cleave scored four points, Lane Bailey scored off a steal, Kenny hit a short jumper and Mikel Britt scored four straight to make it 24-10. Kilkenny scored inside, Bailey hit a long jumper, Justin Delveaux hit a three- pointer. Nacho Elguezabal hit a short jumper. Quinn Peck hit a three-pointer and scored of an assist from RJ Farrens. Van Cleave scored to close out the first half with the Mustangs leading, 40-11. The Mustangs didn't slow down in the third as Britt had eight points and seven, including another three-pointer as they increased their lead to 62-12 after three. Bailey scored inside, Nathan Van Cleave hit a short jumper, Elguezabal scored four straight and Peck hit another three-pointer as they coasted through the fourth. Peck finished with 15 points with Kilkenny adding 12 points and six rebounds and Britt had 12 points. Matt Van Cleave had eight points and four rebounds. Mustang JV girls beat Irrigon By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang JV girls built an 18-4 first half lead and eventually won 45-24 over the Irrigon Knights on Friday, Dec. 16 in Irrigon to improve to 4 and 1 on the year. The Mustangs will be at home against Grant Union on Thursday, Dec. 29 before traveling to Walla Walla to face the DeSales Irish on Friday, Dec. 30. The M ustangs led 10-0 over one against the Knights, getting four points from Kylie Doherty and eventually led 18-4 at the half. Sarah Milner had 7 points in the third as they increased their lead to 34-10 after three and they coasted to the win. M ilner led the M ustangs with 15 points, five rebounds, and four steals, with Doherty adding Sarah Milner had eight points in the 12 points and four steals.
