Odd Fellow and Rebekah Lodges will sponsor the annual United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth Speak-Off, to be held Sunday, Jan. 8, at 2 p.m. in the IOOF hall in Pendleton. This is a speak-off held by the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Lodges since 1951. The local groups have sent from one to three students each year on a two-week tour to the east coast. This year they plan to send four students from the local area thanks to a grant from Wildhorse Foundation for the expenses of two students. This is an opportunity for high school students in the 10lh and 11th grades in Umatilla and Morrow counties, to earn a two-week, all expense paid trip to the east coast in the summer of 2006. Last y ear’s local winners were Kyra Davis of Pendleton and Emily Holden of Milton-Freewater. They joined a group of 26 young people from Oregon who flew to New York, spent three days in Canada, visited Niagara Falls, Washington, DC, Arlington Cemetery, Gettysburg, and many more points of interest. To receive an application contact M arguerite Maznaritz, state committee/district chairman, at 276-2853, or Gladys Biggerstaff, secretary at 276-4417. To qualify, a student must be a sophomore or junior in high school, write a 750-word essay on “What is the United Nations” which is due Wednesday, Jan. 4, and give a speech on the subject at the speak-off Jan. 8. We as an organization are non political and the material to be presented by the student is at their own discretion. “It was absolutely the trip of a lifetime. Just as amazing as the sights and experiences were the people,” said Kyra Davis, who made the trip last year. "I made several wonderful friends on this trip. Over a period of a couple of weeks we came to feel that w e’d known each other our whole lives. I got to see sights I never knew I’d see and am so happy I got to go. Once again, thank you very much for my trip.” Emily Holdman of Milton-Freewater commented, “Thank you so much for sponsoring my trip this last summer. It was such an amazing experience that truly opened my eyes to the world. I really loved visiting Gettysburg, we had an incredible tour guide there. I almost felt guilty at the top of the Empire State building without my family. The best part about the trip was the amazing people that I’ve met. My two best friends and I talk on a weekly basis. Thank you again for my two best friends and the enjoyable trip that I received.” A nyone w ho know s a stu d en t w ho w ould appreciate an opportunity like this, let them know about the opportunity.
