HHS to present offbeat comedy The Heppner High School Drama Department will present the play, “Help! I ’m T rap p ed in a H igh School !” on Wednesday and Thursday. The Lexington City Council voted to appoint Lexington attorney Valerie Doherty as Lexington mayor during their regular meeting held Tuesday, October 11. The two remaining c o u n cil m em b ers, Jean Brazell and Kirk Looslie, ap p ro v ed D o h e rty ’s appointm ent as previous mayor, John Edwards, and previous council member for position two, Luella Taylor, had been recalled. Prior to appointing Doherty, Looslie and Brazell accepted the e le c tio n re su lts w hich recalled Edw ards, 63-42, and Taylor, 65-40. Council member Jean Brazell will still face a recall election on November 8. Doherty led a brief, ordered meeting after she was sworn in by Lexington recorder Nicki Clement. The co u n cil then approved the appointment of M ike O rw ick to council position two and Beverly Steagall to position three. Both had in d ic a ted the position they desired. Marcia Kemp and Sam Martin also said they were interested in serving on the council, but had not indicated which position they desired. In other business, the council: -approved a request fo r up to $500 from Lexington Fire Chief Charlie Sum’ner, w ho re q u e ste d funds to hire an electrician to w ire in a new air compressor at the fire hall. Sumner also said the fire department has funds left over from a grant which the department would like to use to purchase new equipment. He added th at tw o firefighters will be taking their entry level classes. -heard a report from Dan M arshall, Lexington maintenance, who said that a log jam on Willow Creek could create flooding. He said that the owner of the property at the log jam site. Beryl Stillman, had given permission for the town to remove the logs. Marshall su g g ested that people needing firewood may want to remove the logs. - a p p r o v e d publishing a legal notice seeking an engineering firm to c o m p lete the to w n 's W ater M anagem ent and C o n se rv a tio n Plan. The town has up to $75,000 to hire an engineer to complete the Water Management and Conservation Plan by March of next year. -approved increasing the mileage reimbursement rate to 48.5 cents per mile for employees using their ow n v eh icles fo r tow n business. -ap p ro v ed the October bills. -learned that seven accounts had been notified that their water service was to be d isco n n e c ted on October 17. -le a rn e d that an O regon D ep artm en t of Transportation grant to pave L ex in g to n stre e ts was denied. Brazell offered to help in completing the project. -learn ed that the tow n receiv ed around $5,106 for new fire hydrants from the county’s tippage fees, a llo c ate d by the county's Need and Issues Committee. Marcia Kemp commented that she believed the tow n should have received a larger portion of the monies allocated, w hich am ounted to around $ 1 20,000. Kemp volunteered to serve as the town's representative on the co m m ittee and o ffered assistance to the town in applying for grants. The council agreed by consensus that Clement should be the town's representative on the co m m ittee. at least temporarily. -on the advice of D oherty, tab led the remainder of old business until the next meeting so that the new council members could have time to read the material. -heard a concern from Lexington resident D orothy E dw ards w ith regard to the town missing the original deed for the town's Well #3. The deed is recorded at the courthouse, but the town does not have the original deed, only a copy. Council members did not believe that obtaining the original was necessary as long as it had been recorded. Two headed snake found in Heppner Which way do we gu? A two-headed bull snake was found Monday by Rita Woolsey while working in her yard at her home near the Morrow County Sheriff 's Office in Heppner. Both heads on the snake were functioning with the tongue com ing from each head som etim es simultaneously and sometimes separately. After a photo session at the Gazette-Times the snake was released back into the w ild.
