D on is a lifelong resident o f Morrow County. He has a proven track record as a successful businessman D o n ’s a cco u n tin g and business experience would be a valuable addition to the Port Commission Don has been active in the community and has served on the Port budget Cattle producer supports resolution To the Editor: I am w riting as a cattle producer, R-CALF LISA member, member o f the O regon C a ttle m e n ’s A ssociation and M orrow County Livestock Growers, to ask Representative Greg Walden (R -O R -2) to co sponsor and convince the House leadership to allow a vote on H J. Res. 23, a Resolution o f Disapproval of the USDA rule that would prematurely open the U S. border to Canadian beef and cattle Cattle producers in M orrow C ounty are co u n tin g on our representative signing onto this bill So far, to my know ledge, 42 U.S. representatives have signed on as co -sp o n so rs The livelihood o f ranch families depends on this being a top priority in the House. This resolution passed on March 3 in the U.S. Senate and we are hoping for a House floor (L-R): Arthur Ekstrom and Kasie Peterson were chosen vote on the issue prior to as lone's Prom King and Queen on April 23 at the May 7. The team also hopes of selling each lane for $5000 and pooling all the money from supportive donors to possibly name these lanes from various areas. In the planning stages are lanes nam ed fo r H eppner, L exington, S andhoilow / Buttercreek, Rhea/Ruggs, for example We would also like to honor o ur state champions and are open for suggestions. The car wash is a way for the kids to work for obtaining something they will use and it’s a great team bonding activity. Please bring in your cars to wash. P lease jo in us in voting for Don Russel! for Commissioner for the Port o f Morrow. (s) Larry and Betty Mills Heppner 225-6730 or fax him at (202) 225-5774 and urge him to sign on as a co-sponsor to H.J Res. 23 and also have him ask House leadership for the full House vote on the resolution. People I have talked to in the cattle business also feel that the U.S. would be closer to getting Japan and o th e r im p o rtan t e x p o rt markets to resume trade with us if they didn’t feel we were ab o u t to je o p a rd iz e ourselves and others by too quickly opening the border to Canada, when Canada is not complying with world standards for BSE. Taiwan, Egypt, The Philippines and Tahiti recently re-opened their markets to U.S. beef, but prohibited shipping them any Canadian beef imported into the United States At present, U.S. beef is th e safest b e e f in the world. We have a separate high standard in the United S tates and m ust not be fo rced to low er th o se standards. Cattlem en and consum ers deserve to be protected now (s) Pamela Wunderlich Heppner Consider Port representation carefully To the Editor: Voters will receive ballots in the mail this week that include a slate o f candidates for the Port o f Morrow board o f directors. As m ost people know, the Port offices are located in Boardman (which is where most o f the port’s developm ent is located). However, since the closing o f the Kinzua sawmill in 1998 the Port has owned and operated the former mill site now called th e South Morrow Industrial Park As president o f the W illow C reek V alley E conom ic D evelopm ent Group (WCVEDG), I have had the opportunity to work with the Port on various business recruitment efforts in the past several years at the industrial park The Port has also leased four acres to the city o f Heppner, which we hope to use for future industrial development. WCVEDG has had a good relationship with the P o rt and its board o f directors, and as president o f W CVEDG, I urge South Morrow County residents to o p en th e ir b a llo ts and c o n sid e r carefu lly th e ir ch o ices fo r the P o rt o f M orrow board We need co n tin u ed stro n g representation to back up the many people in our area working hard to better the economy o f South Morrow C ounty. Your choice o f b o ard m em bers is very important to these continued efforts and I urge your care and c o n sid e ra tio n w hen choosing candidates to the Port o f Morrow. It has been su g g ested th a t all C ity Council m em bers should agree on everything, but if they don’t, should not submit such letters to the media, but in stead co m p o se th ese letters and have another party sign and submit them. That does not strike me as being quite ethical. I believe in calling a spade a spade and that this political correctness s tu ff is ju s t so m uch u n a d u lte ra te d bovine byproduct. To Glenn B aker I say, keep up the good work and continue to keep your fellow taxpayers informed, (s) Gene Sonstegard Heppner lone church to hold annual auction B arg ain s and barbeque will abound at the 4 3 rd lo n e C om m unity Church auction, to be held Saturday, June 4 at the Willows Grange Hall in lone T his annual fu n d ra ise r supports the mission and outreach o f the small church and donations o f auction item s are now being accepted.
