/ Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, April 6, 2005 - THREE Mustangs lose to Pendleton JV Mustang JVs outlast Hermiston Mustang JVs blank Vikings After having Grant Union cancel out o f Friday’s gam e and h aving the doubleheader at Warrenton rained out, the H eppner Mustang baseball team was able to get a game up with the Pendleton JV at the last minute, but came out flat and never got going as they lost 7-1 in P en d leto n on S aturday, A pril 2. The M ustangs, 2 and 2, have re sc h e d u le d the doubleheader with Sherman County, which was snowed out, for Thursday, April 7 at Moro at 3 p.m. and will be at home against Nyssa for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9 beginning at 1 p.m. The M ustangs start the Columbia Basin Conference season at Weston-McEwen on Tuesday, April 12 for one game at 4:30 p.m. The Bucks took a 1 - 0 lead in the second and stretched it to 5-0 in the fourth, before the Mustangs could get on the board. Jode Coil doubled, went to third on a single by Josh Gutierrez and scored on a Kory Paullus fielder’s choice. Pendleton added tw o m ore in the bottom o f the fifth for the final score o f 7-1. C oil p itch ed four innings striking out six, giving up two hits, no walks, but hit fo u r b atters. Gutierrez went the last two innings in relief, giving up two runs. Matt Kenny got the only o th er h it as the Mustangs could manage just three for the game. Photo by Sandy Matthews. mwmm By Rick Paullus After building leads o f 14-2 go in g into the bottom o f the fifth and 16-6 going in to the sixth, the H eppner M ustang JV baseball team outlasted the Hermiston Bulldog Frosh and took a 16-13 win on M onday, M arch 28 in Hermiston. The Mustangs hurt themselves by giving up 14 w alks and hit seven batters, but they gave up just six hits and had just one error. With two out in the first, the Mustangs got on the board w hen M att McCabe singled and scored on a Matt Kenny double. Kenny later scored when Nacho Elguezabal reached on an error. The Bulldogs tied it in second, but the Mustangs came back in the third when McCabe was hit by a pitch, Kenny reached on an error and Elguezabal grounded out to second to score McCabe. Robbie Smith then had an RBI single, Colton H anson w alked, A ndre Rauch had an RBI single and Hanson scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-2. In the fourth, Nathan K ennedy, M cC abe and K enny each w alk ed , Elguezabal scored two with a single, Sm ith singled, Kenny scored on a wild pitch and Rauch grounded out to score Elguezabal and make it 10-2. The Mustangs, 4 and 0, w ill be at hom e a g a in st R iv ersid e for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m. The M ustangs jumped out to a quick lead in the first when Kennedy reached on an error, McCabe w alked and Matt Kenny reached on an error to score Kennedy. McCabe scored on a w ild pitch as N acho E lg u ezab al and R obbie Sm ith w alked. C olton Hanson scored two with a d o u b le and Sm ith and H anson sco red on w ild pitches as A ndre Rauch walked to make it 6-0. T hey added one more in the second when M cC abe sin g led , stole second and scored on an Elguezabal single. In the third, Justin Archer singled, stole second and scored on a Kennedy single. Cody Hollis was hit by a pitch, McCabe walked, Kenny had an RBI single, Elguezabal walked, Smith reached on a fielder’s choice to score one and another scored on a wild pitch to make it 11-0. The Mustangs added two more in the fifth when Hanson reached on an error, Sean M urray sin g led , Kennedy reached on an error to score one and another scored on a wild pitch to make it 13-0. McCabe went three innings to pick up the win, strik in g out seven, but walking seven with Kennedy going the final two innings, striking out four and walking three. M cCabe went one for two scoring three runs, Kennedy and Hanson each had two RBI and scored twice and Kenny had two RBI. In the second game, Hollis reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch and McCabe walked and later scored as Smith reached on an error, but the Vikings came back with two in the bottom half to tie it up. The Mustangs added one in the second, when Rauch doubled, went to third on the throw and scored on a Hollis single. One more was gained in the third when Sm ith sin g led and later scored on a wild pitch. H ollis pitched all three innings, allowing two runs on three hits, struck out five and walked four.
