Oregon legislators propose
studded-tire fee
R e p re s e n ta tiv e s
Terry

(D -

(D -C lack am as
County) have introduced a
bill (HB 2869) that would
charge users o f studded
tires a $ 10-fee per tire at
th e tim e o f sale and
installation, the legislators’
o ffices
an n o u n ced
Thursday Money from the
fee would go into the State
Highway Fund, to help
repair damage caused by
studded tires.
“All users o f the
highway system bear the
cost o f repairing damage
caused by users of studded
tires,” Beyer said “Our bill
would make a start toward
settin g up a 'u s e r-p a y s ’
system.”
Even th o u g h the
state legalized studded tires
in 1967, the O regon
D ep artm en t
of
T ran sp o rta tio n (O D O T )
discourages motorists from
using them for several
reasons- primarily safety and
wear on the roads
“ Studded tires aren’t
as safe as non-studded tires
in rainy conditions,” Hunt
said. “Here in Oregon, most
drivers face wet conditions
far more often than packed
snow or ice Also, studded
tires create ruts in the surface
o f the roads, which cause
even more hazards.”
