Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 16,2006 - FIVE Mustang JV boys lose to Tigerscots B y Rick Paullus The H eppner Mustang JV boys fell behind by 13 at the half and couldn’t recover as they lost to the Weston-McEwen Tigerscots by a sco re o f 44-23 on Tuesday, Feb 8 in Athena The Mustangs dropped to 7 and 7 on the year with the loss The M ustangs couldn’t get started as they fell behind 9-2 after one and tra ile d 21-8 at the h alf despite four second quarter p o in ts from Tony H aguew ood They stayed even with the Tigerscots in the third, but couldn’t make up any ground and were outscored 15-7 in the fourth in taking the loss. Quinn Peck scored five points with Haguewood, Matt McCabe and Brendan McElligott each adding four points. Team: 18 4-8 44 3-pts: Bronchean 2, Arteaga and McGufFey. lone boys’ JV beat Echo The lone boys’ JV team struggled in the early going against E cho last Tuesday, Feb 8, but dug down deep in the fourth quarter to pull out a come- Good from-behind win, 39-36 Echo jumped out to an early lead and led by as many as 14 points at one tim e At the end o f one quarter, the Cardinals trailed 16-6 T hings h a d n ’t improved much by halftime when lone was still down by a 26-14 deficit The Cards stepped up the defensive pressure after halftime and got back into their usual game rhythm At the end of three, they still trailed but only by eight points and in the fourth quarter, they really began to roll, outscoring the Cougars 17-6. Coach Jim Swanson was happy to see his team rally from defeat He praised Paul Hams and Justin Archer for good work on the press and making steals He also noted that Taylor McElligott had two key blocks in the late going o f the game that sw ung the m om entum to w a rd s the C ardinals. We didn’t do a real good job on defense against a couple of kids It was a good game and it cam e down to the last minute,” said Coach Mike Garrett “We missed a couple o f lay- ins and turned the ball over and that was the difference in the ball game I was proud o f the kids for working hard and their sportsmanship was good following the loss.” Mustangs!
