Photo by Sandy Matthews By Rick Paullus A 31-12 advantage in the first and fo u rth quarters helped the Heppner M ustang JV girls end the season with a 41 -24 win over the visiting Stanfield Tigers on Friday, Feb. 11. The Mustangs, who finished the year 10 and 7, were coached by C hris R auch and consisted of juniors Heather Yocom and Lynan Bingham; sophomores, Regi Seitz and M ahaley H uddleston and freshm en W hitney Matthews, Cyde Coil, Katie Kilkenny, Kelsie Fox, Kylie Doherty, Taylor Kempas, Jenna B ow m an, A ftan B etsin g e r and B aillie Keithley. Seitz had five points and Matthews and Coil each hit 3 -p o in te rs as the Mustangs took a 15-4 lead after one, but the Tigers came back to trail just 19- 13 at the half. Coil had four points in the third as they pushed the lead to 25-16 after three and M atthews had five points in the fourth, including a long 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Mustangs coasted to the win. C oil led the Mustangs with 11 pints and had six steals, w ith M atth ew s adding eight points, five rebounds and four steals. Kilkenny had six points, seven rebounds and two assists, Seitz had five points, three steals and two assists, Betsinger had six rebounds and tw o steals, Kempas had three steals and tw o assists. Fox had five rebounds, B ow m an had three steals, Yocom had two assists and Bingham had two steals. Lady Cards defeat Echo The lo n e Lady Cardinals got back on the winning track last Tuesday night, Feb. 8 defeating the visiting Echo Cougars 41- 28. lone got out to an early 11 -2 lead at the end of one q u arter, using an effective press and good team defense. By halftime, the Cards led 22-10. Echo pulled to within eight at one point in the second half but the Lady Cards answered and pulled away for the win. Amber Patton had a big game for lone, scoring 17 points, pulling down 11 rebounds and grabbing five steals. Jenny Griffith also had a strong effort with eight points and eight rebounds. “This was a good win for us after the loss to D ufur” said Coach Ryan Rudolf. “We were able to put some pressure on them and we played very good team defense. We shot the ball better than we have in recent games and that is a good sign heading towards the District Tournament. By Rick Paullus By Rick Paullus A d isap p o in tin g season came to an end on Friday, Feb 11 for the Heppner M ustang varsity boys as they lost to the visiting Stanfield Tigers by a score o f 55-31 in Columbia Basin Conference play. The Mustangs finished the season with a 2-10 record in the CBC and 5-14 reco rd overall It also was the last game for seniors Brandon Seitz, Kyle Huddleston, Josh Gutierrez, Gus Torres and Kory Paullus. Players who will be returning next year for head coach F o rrest M cK innis are ju n io rs, Matthew VanCleave, Matt Kenny, Rory Kilkenny and Mikel Britt; sophomores, RJ Farrens and Quinn Peck and freshman, Matt McCabe The M ustangs got off to a horrible start as all they could m uster offensively was a 3-pointer by Torres that tied it at 3-3 and a rebound basket by Paullus as the Tigers took a 17-5 lead after one Torres hit a jumper to make it 19-7 then Huddleston hit one o f two free throws and VanCleave scored twice inside to make it 21 -12. Kilkenny hit one of two free throws and Paullus scored o ff a pass from Torres, but the Tigers took a 28-15 lead into the locker room. The Mustangs went cold again in the third as all they could get was a free th ro w and lay-in from Paullus and a VanCleave lay- in on a pass from Farrens as the Tigers increased their lead to 42-20 at the end of three. Huddleston scored off a rebound to open the fourth Peck hit one of two free throws and Gutierrez scored off a drive to make it 48-25 Gutierrez and Peck hit short jumpers to make it 50-29 and Kenny scored off a pass from Farrens for the final two points o f the year P aullus led a balanced scoring attack with seven p o in ts and five rebounds, with VanCleave adding six p o in ts, six rebounds and five blocked shots. It also marked the last regular season game at home for seniors Shanna R ietm ann, Susan S o u th w o rth , Linsey Mitchell, Terra Wilson, Blair K eithley and M adison Bailey, who is out for the season with a knee injury.
