Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 1, 2004 - FIVE M ustangs fall short in quarterfinals against Raiders By R ic k Paullus M i s s e d opportunities spelled defeat for the Heppner Mustangs in the quarterfinals of the US Bank/Les Schwab OSAA 2A state football playoffs as the visiting Lost River Raiders held on for a 21-14 win on Saturday, Nov. 27 The Mustangs ended the year with a 7 and 4 record and will lose seniors Brandon Seitz, Tyler Boyer, Jode Coil, Aaron Delveaux, Francisco Escalante and Kory Paullus. The Raiders, who move on into the semi-finals against Vale, to o k the opening kick-off and moved dow n the field to the Mustangs five before Quinn Peck made a tackle for a loss and Paullus knocked down a pass in the end zone and the Raiders missed a 19-yard field goal attempt. The Mustangs were unable to move the ball and were forced to punt, but the defense held and they took over on dow ns at their twenty-three Matt Kenny went for tw o and Boyer broke free for 13 yards and a first down. After a short run by Boyer, Kenny took a shovel pass from Matthew VanCleave two yards then D elveaux caught a pass, good for 13 yards and a first down at the 46-yard line Boyer went for three, then broke free for 40 yards to the one, but it was brought back on a penalty for an illegal block. After being forced to punt, the defense held and the Mustangs took over at their 33-yard line after the R aiders’ punt Boyer ran twice for nine, VanCleave ran three and a first down, after two plays lost eight yards and a penalty, Seitz caught a 23-yard pass from VanCleave and on fourth and two, VanCleave went for five and a first down at the 41 of Lost River Boyer ran twice for seven, VanCleave went for five more and then hit Seitz for 16 yards to the 15- yard line Boyer went for six, then VanCleave hit Coil in the end zone for a touchdown Matt McCabe kicked the extra point to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead with just 51 seconds left in the second quarter The Raiders took the kick-off back to their 49- yard line after a penalty on the Mustangs forced them to re-kick and eventually would score on a 16-yard pass play on the last play of the second quarter The extra point kick was good to send the game into halftime with a 7-7 tie The M ustangs received the second half kick-off and started moving the ball as Kenny went for seven, Boyer ran for eight m ore, the R aiders w ere called for offsides, Kenny went for three, they lost two, Boyer got the two back and on fourth and inches, VanCleave went for four and a first down. VanCleave hit Coil for 13 yards, the Raiders were offsides again, Boyer went for 14 yards to the fifteen and on third and eleven, he took a screen pass 13 yards to the four On second down, the Raiders ended the drive with an interception and returned it to the eleven The defense held and the Mustangs got the ball back at their own 48-yard line after the punt VanCleave hit D elveaux down the sideline for 29 yards, but an incomplete pass on fourth down gave the Raiders the ball at their own 16-yard line as the third quarter ended The Raiders drove deep into Mustang territory, but Paullus picked off'a pass at the four and returned it to the 30-yard line The M ustangs were unable to move the ball and w ere forced to punt, which was blocked and recovered by the Raiders at the Heppner 21-yard line They marched down the field, eventually scoring on a one-yard run and after the kick was good the Raiders had a 14-7 lead with 8:39 left in the fourth quarter Boyer took the kick off back 26 yards to the Mustangs 43-yard line and moved into Raider territory on a three-yard pass from VanCleave to Boyer, a four- yard run by Kenny and an offside penalty by the defense The drive stalled there though as the Raiders took over at their 44-yard line with 5:58 left and drove down the field eventually scoring on another one-yard run and after the extra point led 21-7 with 2:08 left The M ustangs w o u ld n 't quit though as VanCleave hit Delveaux for a seven-yard gain then pitched it back to Boyer who ran untouched down the sideline 52 yards for a touchdown McCabe's kick was good to cut the lead to 21-14 with 1:27 left Coil jumped on the onside kick to give the M ustangs the ball at the Raider 48-yard line, but a q u arterb ack sack, an incom plete pass, then a fumble that was recovered by the Raiders preserved the win for Lost River Boyer finished with 126 yards rushing on 19 carries with V anCleave hitting 12 o f 21 passes for 126 yards Delveaux caught three passes for 49 yards with Boyer catching four passes for 19 yards The defense was led by Paullus with 23 defensive points, with Boyer adding 22 T y le r B o y e r slips a w a y fro m L o s t R iv e r ta c k ie r points Seitz had 17 points. On Nov I I , OSP tro o p ers trveled to the Forrest Grove area on a follow-up to case As a result, Leo Gochenour, 41, o f Forest Grove, was arrested and charged with borrowing an elk tag from another — two counts, exceeding the yearly elk bag limit, hunting in v io latio n o f crim inal trespass, taking a cow and a spike elk with no tags, and unlawful possession of a cow and a spike elk He was lodged in the Washington County Jail.
