Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, November 17, 2004 - FIVE New faces come to lone, Heppner schools H eading the lone S chools team is Bryn B row ning, lo n e ’s new superintendent/principal Browning, 29, and h e r husband. Josh, and two girls, Leslie, 4- Vi and M o rg a n , 1 - '/* , cam e to Bryn Browning lone from Vancouver, WA B row ning has a b a c h e lo r’s degree from E astern W ashington University and a master’s of education from Washington State University-Vancouver W hile she loves teaching, Browning was also interested in following in the footsteps o f many family m em bers w ho w ork in school administration She is the fourth superintendent in her family and there has been an adm inistrator in every generation Browning feels that being an administrator is a way she can make more o f a difference in students’ lives and she can help her teach in g s ta ff make a difference too. The tra n sitio n betw een te ac h e r and a d m in istra to r w a sn ’t expected to come so soon, but after visiting lone over Christmas break last year, Browning and her family fell in love with lone and its people The co n nection drew her to apply for the open position She said waiting for the phone call from the school board on their decision was one o f the most difficult moments, but, once she got the call, was very excited Still loving to interact with the students. B row ning says th at she creates tasks that can get her in the classroom Currently she reads a few hours a week w ith the elem en tary students She also took the opportunity to go on the natural resources field trip with the high school She said she enjoyed getting to know the students outside of school “They are great kids, very respectful and fun ” A nother bonus to w orking in lone is that Browning is a lot closer now to her extended family Her parents, George and Donna Murdock, live in Pendleton and her in-law s live in Kennewick Browning closed in saying that her staff’is “great and all are here for the kids.” She also appreciates how many different “hats” many staff members take on to benefit the children Michelle Stone Michelle Stone, 28, is another o f the new faces at lone S c h o o ls She is te a c h in g m usic to t h e elementary s tu d e n ts Elem entary School vice principal, and three children, moved to H eppner from M ilto n -F reew ater Stone said she was looking forward to getting back to work after taking two years off from teaching This is Stone’s fifth year teaching; she taught for four y ears in M ilton- Freewater Born in M ontana, Stone received her b a c h e lo r’s d eg ree in elementary education with a music minor from Montana State University-Northern in Havre Stone said she is excited to be teaching in lone because o f the great kids and great families In her free time, Stone enjoys singing, playing the piano, writing music and playing with her children She and her family also spend a lot o f their time enjoying the outdoors with sports such as snowmobiling and dirt bike riding All in all, Stone says she is very happy to be living in Heppner and working in lone, even though neither has a McDonald’s Josh Browning Joining the Heppner High School team is Josh Browning Browning, 29, is teach in g ju n io r high language arts. Ddiny "* re c e iv e d h i s bachelor’s degree in social studies at E a s te rn Washington University in Cheney, WA He p u rsu e d his p o s t g ra d u a te Josh Browning w ork in English at W ashington State U niversity-Vancouver While in Vancouver, Browning taught for five years, teaching sixth grade and 10th grade history. He also coached football in V ancouver, skills he is sharing with lone When not teaching or coaching, Browning is active with his children, as well as enjoying many outdoor activities A d ifferen ce B row ning is seeing in Heppner, as opposed to his teach in g ex p erien ce in Vancouver, is that most of the Heppner students have a similar know ledge base, having gone to school together Also, most o f the kids know each other really well B row ning is also enjoying living in the area due to the fact that his family is a lot closer now Melissa Coiner Melissa (McElligott) Coiner, a Morrow County native, has returned from C alifornia to teach in H eppner. C oiner, who graduated from lone High School, came back to the area after getting married to Josh Coiner and deciding that Morrow County was a better place to raise a family than California C oiner, who is teaching junior high math and physical ed u catio n , received her bachelor o f science degree in special education and elementary education from University of N evada-R eno She also coached t h e volleyball “ B” team this year and will b e coaching t h e basketball “A” team I n Melissa Coiner California, Coiner had been teaching sixth grade in a year-round school There has been some adjustments to teaching in Heppner, in that classes sizes are quite a bit smaller than the 33 students she has been used to teaching Also, Coiner had less than a month between jobs, coming out of the y ear-ro u n d cycle Teaching in Heppner is also nice for Coiner because she knows many o f the families of her students In her free tim e, Coiner enjoys watching and playing a variety o f sports, as well as scrapbooking Having bought a home in Heppner, Coiner says she enjoys being closer to her family in lone Bobby Rice Bobby Rice, 33, has come to H eppner, from H alfw ay, to teach K -4,h grade general music, 5th and 6th grade band, junior high and high school band and junior high choir Rice, who has lived in Texas and West Virginia, graduated from Shepherd C ollege (U n iv ersity ) in Shepherdtown, W V, with a bachelor o f arts degree in secondary ed u catio n specializing in music Wanting to be closer to his children, ages 4 and 5, who now live in Portland, R i c e looked for a job in a t o w n closer t h a n Halfway.
