Chamber Chatter B\ Claudia Hughes, Exec. Dir. Heppner experienced its first Oktoberfest this past weekend, with a bit of Irish, a bit of country, lots of contests, German food, music, live and stuffed scarecrows and much laughter Nancy Gochnauer, who personally organized this first ever event, has the contest winners Kudos to all who participated Gift certificates may be picked up at the Chamber office and redeemed at local businesses Our small community has so much to offer People put their hearts and souls into so many events to draw visitors and create an ongoing community spirit It saddens us when stores who have been here “almost forever” close their doors We appreciate their being a part of Heppner’s Main Street for as long as tbev Itaye, What we are seeing is retiremefit for many coming along the pike and a need for energetic new faces to take their place As more and more people leave town for a variety of reasons, businesses shrink and our community shrinks We have to get creative Remember when as children our imaginations were unstoppable and nothing seemed impossible0 We have to come up with ideas Many are working hard to bring in jobs and we are hopeful that some are just around the corner, but we also need retention o f our existing businesses We have to be on our toes: thinking about potential new businesses to fill spaces; looking for capital to make it happen; and finding people who are excited about building and growing business in Heppner We have to dream, we have to believe, we have to bend, we have to give a bit more o f ourselves and most of all we have to energize the younger generation and help them to understand that it’s not all about making the big bucks and competing, rather it’s about being in it together and enjoying a unique quality of life that cities cannot offer When we re out of town, we could mention that there are some great empty buildings in Heppner waiting to be filled Ask friends what they miss about their childhood and tell them many o f those qualities can be found right here Talk to young families and encourage them to move here Brainstorm amenities that we need and might be able to recant Keep our hospital a vital part o f Heppner It takes a community moving forward; complacency is what causes the demise o f small towns Someone said, “Heppner looks so good that it's going to have to hit rock bottom before it comes out punching ” Let’s prove them wrong Let’s fill these stores and create more reasons for visitors and people to relocate Let’s let Salem know that solutions to urban problems are not always solutions to rural problems Offer ideas Vote Those o f us “growing more mature” need 20, 30, 40 and 50-somethings to come forward to keep Heppner alive and well We accept change, we accept new ideas, we need the younger generation to step forward and share their ideas Just do it Come to the table Be there, be aware and prepare for Heppner’s future Thought for the Week “We have lost everything if we have lost our enthusiasm ” • 989-8221 WASCO, OREGON 1 - 800 - 824-7185 www.mcgg.net • v * it SUPPORTING YOUR COMMUNITY AND PROVIDING: * PROPANE SALES AND SERVICE Wedding Tables if; I )■ ni il., IXink'L lïi-lor Keitli I truilt'vold Wedding Sunday, ( ictooer 17th - FARM EQUIPMENT SALES.
