The Lady Cards got off to a slow start and lost the first game 15-25. They came back and won the next three games, 25-19,26- 24 and 25-21. Alyssa Rietmann, Sara Peck and Jenny Griffith each scored 10 service points to lead their team. Rietmann also delivered two aces, 74 passes, 13 hits, four kills, six set assists, five blocks and two saves. Peck had five aces, 92 passes, 20 hits, five blocks, eight set assists, two saves and led the team with 10 kills. Griffith brought in three aces. 59 passes, eight hits, two kills, three blocks and six set assists. Abby Key added eight service points, four aces, two hits, 20 passes, 28 set assists and two saves. Ashly Grams had four service points, three aces, one hit, 27 passes, 69 set assists and four saves. Stephanie Holland contributed two service points, 27 passes, one block and three hits. Kim Morris finished out the service points by contributing one point, one ace, one save, 16 passes, two blocks and one hit. Others contributing were Kylee Svetich with 10 passes, five hits, one kill, one set assist and one save; Emily Rietmann with four passes and two set assists; and Barbara Holland with 17 passes, 10 hits, one kill, three blocks and three saves. Coach Cathy McCabe said, “In game one we just couldn’t get our passes to the net. Barbara Holland and Alyssa Rietmann, both, did a nice job defensively and offensively on the net. Abby Key served to secure the match in game four.” Lady Cardinals take second at lone tournament By Marie Key Mustangs roughed up by Bulldogs By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustangs took an early 6-0 lead at Willamina on Friday, Sept. 17, but then it turned into the B ryan Fendall show as he scored the next four touchdowns as the Bulldogs went on to a 50-18 win. Fendall, a 5 foot 11 inch, 200-pound senior, ran for 268 yards and four touchdowns for the Bulldogs. The Mustangs finished the non-league part of the schedule at 0 and 3 and now will get into the Columbia Basin Conference at Stanfield on Friday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. The Mustangs got their early touchdown after forcing a punt deep in Willamina territory, which was blocked and recovered in the end zone by Brandon Seitz. The run failed and the Mustangs had an early 6-0 lead. Then it was the Fendall show as he scored on a run of 25 yards in the first quarter and on runs o f 18 yards, 76 yards and two yards in the second quarter to give the Bulldogs a 24-6 lead at the half. The M ustangs came out in the third quarter scoring first on a four-yard run by Tyler Boyer, which was set up by a 50-yard run by Matt Kenny. The Bulldogs came back with an answer, but the Mustangs answered back when Boyer took in a screen pass from Matthew VanCleave and raced 50 yards up the sideline for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, but the Mustangs were within 30-18 late in the third quarter. The Bulldogs added three more scores in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win. Boyer led the Mustangs with 86 yards on 22 carries and caught two passes for 53 yards. Kenny had 56 yards on six carries. Boyer led the defense with 20 defensive points. Aaron Delveaux added 17 points, Jode Coil and Kenny added 16 each, Kory Paullus added 14, Peter Geer added 13 and Seitz added 12 points. Spray placed first. lone defeated Irrigon 25-18 and 25-21. They defeated Cascade Locks 25-16 and 25-13. However, they then lost to Spray 19-25 and 15-25. Alyssa Rietmann led the team with 15 service points. Abby Key was close behind with 13 service points. Rietmann also added one ace, 20 passes, 15 hits, three kills and seven set assists. Key had one ace, five passes, two hits, one kill and 35 set assists. Leading in the kills was Sara Peck with 11. Peck also added six service points, two aces, 33 passes, six blocks, two set assists and 20 hits. Kim Morris added eight service points, one ace, 18 passes, two set assists, three hits and five kills. Stephanie Holland had seven service point, one ace, 39 passes, two blocks, four hits and six kills. Emily Reitmann had six points, one ace, eight passes, eight set assists and three hits. Ashly Grams had five service points, one ace, one tip, one kill, three passes and 35 set assists. Missy Baker had four service points, two passes, six hits and two kills. Mustang JVs fall to Willamina F eatu rin g P R IM E R IB HOMES & PROPERTIES The Willamina Bulldogs scored late in the second quarter to take a 12-6 win from the Mustang JVs in a two-quarter game prior to the varsity game in Willamina on Friday, Sept. 17. The Mustangs will be back on the field for a full game against the Hermiston Frosh on Monday, Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs scored first to take a 6-0 lead, but the Mustangs came right back to tie it on a 10-yard run by Matt McCabe. On the drive, McCabe ran four times for 25 yards and Casey Maben ran twice for 15 yards to set up the touchdown. On the Bulldogs next possession, McCabe picked off a pass and returned it 12 yards to the Willamina 25- yard line. Maben had a 22-yard touchdown run called back on a penalty and the Mustangs ended up turning the ball over on downs. Caleb Maben picked off a pass at the Bulldog 31 - yard line and Kody Lovgren recovered a fumble at the Heppner twenty-three with the Bulldogs driving, but the Mustangs couldn't take the advantage. The Bulldogs scored with 3:36 left and hung on for the win.
