The M ustangs dropped to 0 and 2 on the year and have one more non league game against a very good W illam ina team on Friday, Sept. 17 before beginning Columbia Basin Conference play on Sept. 24 at Stanfield. Neither team could move the ball through the first seven minutes o f the first quarter as each team punted twice. On the Braves third punt, T yler B oyer gathered it in and went 64 y ards up the R eedsport sid elin e, g ettin g a huge block from Brandon Seitz, for the g a m e ’s first to u chdow n. M atthew VanCleave hit Kory Paullus for the two-point conversion to make it 8-0. Matt Kenny picked off a Reedsport pass on their next possession and returned it 23 yards to the Braves 47- yard line, but the Mustangs couldn’t take advantage and were forced to punt again as the first quarter ended. The team s traded punts again until the Braves picked off a screen pass and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown. They completed the two-point conversion to tie it at 8-8. That was short lived though as Boyer gathered in the kick-off and raced 82 yards for a touchdown to give the Mustangs a 14-8 lead after the tw o-point Heppner lineman Peter Geer (75) scoops up a kickoff conversion run was stopped short. The B raves cam e right back and scored taking a 15-14 lead after kicking the extra point with 3:49 left in the first half. But the B raves resp o n d ed w ith a long touchdown pass to take a 21 - 20 lead at the half, ending a wild second quarter in which the teams combined for 35 points. The Mustangs took the second h a lf k ick -o ff starting at their own forty- two and moved inside the Braves forty as Kenny ran twice for 10 yards and Boyer ran three times for 11 yards but a hold took the ball back to midfield. Boyer ran twice for 10 yards and on fourth down, VanCleave hit Seitz for a 15-yard gain to the twenty. Boyer ran twice for seven yards but the drive stalled and the Braves took in the back o f the end zone for a 20-yard touchdow n pass. The B raves took over at their own thirty after a long k ic k -o ff by M att M cCabe and began their game winning drive. The Mustangs almost had them sto p p ed but the B raves com pleted a double pass faced w ith a fourth and sixteen at midfield, good for 22 yards and a first down. The M ustangs had one last chance as Casey Maben jumped on an onside kick at the Heppner forty- eig h t but four stra ig h t incomplete passes gave the Braves back the ball and they were able to run out the clock for the win. The defense was led by Boyer with 34 defensive points with Kenny adding 24 points, Paullus 19, Seitz 18, C oil and F ran cisco E scalan te 10 each and D elveaux and G ordy Wegworth nine points each.
