L ouis and B etty Carlson returned the favor to five relatives who had come to visit them from Sweden last year, by taking a two- week trip to Sweden for a “relative gathering.” W hile at the gathering, the Carlsons had the honor of m eeting 99 other relatives of Louis besides the original five who visited Heppner. D uring the two w eeks, fam ily m em bers took turns show ing the C arlso n s around Lindesberg, which is about the size of Pendleton, where most of the relatives live. T hey enjoyed many sightseeing tours, as well as fam ily tim e over m eals. Betty said that one group of family members would take them for a few hours, for a tour or a meal, and another one would come to say it was there turn to have them for a few hours. “They made us both feel very w elcom e and wanted,” said Betty. “It was if you knew them all your life.” ' > 'IfiCli; Som e of the in terestin g places the Carlsons visited included a factory that manufactures Volvo parts and iron works castin g factory, w hich creates part of the windmills that are sold to the United States. They also visited a few castles and the original birthplace of Louis' great grandfather, which is now just a plaque. Another honor the Carlsons received while in Sweden was that the mayor o f L indesberg, A nders Ceder, visited with them and gave them each a gift. Louis received a tie and Betty a scarf, each show ing the Lindesberg butterfly. The butterfly is only found in L indesberg and is quite special to the people. They w ere also honored to have the story of their visit, and the history of how the family in Sweden found the C arlso n s, published in the Lindesberg newspaper. W hile at the gathering, Louis invited the family to the Carlson family reunion to be held in Seattle in June 2(X)5. Several family members said they would love to com e, and one commented that wouldn’t the Carlsons be surprised if all 104 m em bers from Sweden showed up. The Carlsons came home June 29 and have returned to the swing of Heppner life but say they hope to get back to Sweden for a visit again. The Town of Lexington is seeking three persons who reside within the town and who are interested in town government to file for open positions. Jim Nelson and Jean Brazell have two more years to fulfill before their terms expire. The m ayor’s position is open for a two- year term as the four-year position was vacated several months ago. John Edwards was appointed to fill the position until the next general election at which time by charter, the position must be put on the ballot. This term will run from Jan. 1, 2005 to Dec. 31, 2006. Councilor positions U\ and #2, presently held by Chirella Wallace and Luella Taylor are also available to be filled. These positions are for a four-year term, to begin Jan. 1, 2005 and end Dec. 31,2008. To be elig ib le to hold an elective office in the Town o f Lexington, the person must be a qualified elector within the meaning of the state constitution and live within the town limits. The town’s election officer is Nicki Clement. She has packets for the individuals seeking the positions at Town Hall, 150 W. Main, Lexington, on Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m. The nom ination petitions must be filed with the elections officer no later than 5 p.m., prevailing time, Aug. 20,2004 at Town Hail. A barbecue catered by John and N ancy G ochnauer will begin at 12:30 p.m. Donations for the barbecue w ill be appreciated.
