Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - FIVE St. Patrick’s Senior Center news HJHS grade 6-7 girls take Champion honors The Heppner Junior High track team wrapped up the season with strong final perform ances from many a th le tes to fin ish high o v erall in team and individual standings at the Junior High Championship track meet on May 7. The sixth and seventh grade girls took Champion honors from the 10 schools participating, with every girl placing in her events. The 6th-7 ,h grade team consists of: Catherine M cE llig o tt, Erin P rice, Nikki Fritz, Ashley Wolff, B rynna R ust, W hitney Smith, Kristen VanCleave, Jodessa Chapa and Hollie Whatley. “These girls are a determined, multi-talented group that exhibit strong work ethics. They gave a lot o f them selves all season, winning team titles and the championship title is well 'earned and deserved,” said track coach Susan Hisler. The girls won eight out of 14 events. The sixth and seventh grade boys, the eighth grade girls and the eighth grade boys all took third places. Events cham pions included: C a t h e r i n e M cE lligott (6 lh-7 lh grade girls’ team) who set the New School Record for the 800 m eter w ith a tim e o f 2 minutes 41.98 seconds. The record was last set in 1995 by Abby Kahl with a time of 2 minutes 42.20 seconds. M cE llig o tt also had champion times in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 54.27 seconds and in the 1500 meter with a time of 5 m inutes 33.32 seconds. Earlier this year, McElligott set a NSR in the 1500 meter "Vith a time of 5 minutes 27 ^seconds. The record was last ''set in 1995 by Brooke Boyer with a time of 5 minutes 47.71 seconds. Kristen VanCleave (6th-7th grade girls’ team) took the champion spot in the javelin with a throw of 85 feet 7 inches. VanCleave set the NSR at 88 feet 4 inches on April 9,2004. The record was last set by Cyde Coil at 75 feet 5 inches in •2003. Cyde Coil (8,h grade g ir ls ’ team ) w as the undefeated repeat champion in the high jump with a jump of 4 feet 10 inches, which is a personal best. Brynna Rust (6lh-7,h grade g irls ’ team ) had champion places with a time of 14.06 seconds in the 100 meter; 19.76 seconds in the 200 meter; and a personal best of 13 feet 4 inches in the long jump. Nikki Fritz (6,h-7th grade girls’ team) took the champion place with a jump of 4 feet 4 inches in the high jump. Lane B ailey (8 lh grade b o y s’ team ) had champion places in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.23 secon d s and the javelin with a throw of 139 feet 2 inches. M att M cCabe (8,h grade b o y s’ team ) had champion places in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet 3 inches and in the discus with a throw of 113 feet 5 inches. C hris W ellington (6lh-7Ih grade boys’ team) had champion places in the 200 meter with a time of 27.04 seconds and in the 400 meter with a time of 1 minute 1.06 seconds. Spencer Palmer (6th- 7lh grade boys’ team) had a cham pion place in the javelin with a throw of 111 feet 4 inches. May 30 at 1 p.m. in the dining room of the St. P a trick ’s Senior Center in Heppner. A time to meet and greet friends and relatives is planned to start at 12:30 p.m ., with a w elcom ing cerem ony and program following. Dinner is provided by the Senior Center and churches in the community. The cost of the dinner is $6 for adults, $3 for school age children and preschoolers are free. The m enu en trée includes a choice of sliced turkey breast or roast beef, with a dessert of homemade cobbler and ice cream.
