Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 5, 2004 - FIVE Mustangs beat Vikings, 11-2 ° ° By Rick Paullus The Heppner M ustang baseball team beat the visiting Umatilla Vikings, 11 -2, on Tuesday, April 27, in Columbia Basin Conference play, to remain in first place with a 5 and 1 record. The M ustangs im proved to 14-1-1 overall. They play a key CBC doubleheader at hom e against Pilot Rock on Saturday, M ay 8, at 11 a.m . before hosting W eston-M cE w en on Tuesday, M ay 11, at 4 :30 p.m. A fter spotting the Vikings a 1 -0 lead in the top of the first, the Mustangs cam e back with two runs in the bottom half when C huy Elguezabal w alked and ended up scoring on a sacrifice fly by Jode Coil. Josh Gutierrez reached on an error and scored on a double by Kory Paullus. They added three m ore in the second w hen K yler Lovgren tripled and scored on a Nick Christm an ground-out, Cody Walton singled and scored on an Elguezabal double and Coil had an RBI single to m ake it 5-1. T he Vikings got to w ithin 5-2 before the M ustangs broke out with four runs in the fifth when Coil walked, Gutierrez reached on a fielder’s choice, Paullus scored both with a single, then Lovgren and Christm an each had RBI singles. The M ustangs added tw o m ore in the seventh when Elguezabal reached on an error and Gutierrez walked, Naims had an RBI single and another run scored on an error. Kyle Carlson picked up the win, going four innings, and allowing four hits while striking out four and giving up one earned run. Zack Skaggs pitched three innings in relief, allowing just one hit while striking out six. Lovgren went three for three, with a triple and scored twice. Paullus went two for four, with a double and three RBIs. Coil and Christm an each had tw o RBIs and Elguezabal and Gutierrez each scored three runs. VOTE Mustangs take two from Regis R v DinL By Rick P Paullus The Heppner M ustangs baseball team scored 22 runs on 22 hits, eight for extra bases, to sweep the defending state cham pion Regis Rams, 13-6 and 9-5, on Saturday, M ay l , in The D alles at W ahtonka High School. The M ustangs also played good defense, turning three double plays in the first gam e and com m itting no errors in the second gam e. The M ustangs, now 16 - 1 - 1 on the year, return to C olum bia Basin C onference play with a doubleheader at hom e against Pilot Rock on Saturday, M ay 8 at 11, a.m. and a single gam e at hom e against W eston-M cEw en on Tuesday, M ay 11, at 4:30 p.m. The M ustangs were the home team for the first game. A fter getting out o f a jam in the top o f the first, they scored a run in the bottom half on a double by Chuy Elguezabal and a two-out RBI double from Kory Paullus. T he R am s cam e back w ith a run in the second and two more in the third, but the M ustangs responded with two in the bottom half when Cody Walton led off with a bunt single, stole second, and scored on a tw o-out Josh G utierrez single; Gutierrez then cam e around to score on a Paullus single. The M ustangs took a 5-3 lead in the fourth when Luke M urray reached on an error, K yler L ovgren and N ick Christman singled, Elguezabal reached on a fielder’s choice to score a run and Jode Coil had an RBI single. The Ram s scored three runs in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead, but the M ustangs broke the gam e open with six runs in the bottom half. Paullus reached on an error, M urray had an RBI double, Lovgren had an RBI double, Christm an singled, and W alton w as hit by a pitch. E lguezabal w alked in a run. Coil reached on an error to score a run and Gutierrez reached on a fielder’s choice to score tw o m ore to m ake i f l l -6. They added two insurance runs in the sixth when Kiel N aim s w as hit by a pitch and scored on a Lovgren double, and Lovgren scored on a Walton single. Gutierrez went five innings, giving up just two earned runs with Christman pitching a perfect sixth and seventh innings in relief. Lovgren w ent three for four with tw o doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored. Paullus went two for three with a double and three RBIs. W alton w ent tw o for three with two runs scored. Christman went two for four, Gutierrez had three RBIs, and Coil and Elguezabal each had two RBIs. The M ustangs sw itched and were the visitors in the five inning second game. They jum ped out to lead with four runs all scored with two outs in the first inning. Gutierrez walked, Paullus singled, Naims had an RBI single, Murray had an RBI single and two runs scored when Lovgren reached on an error. The Ram s cam e back with three runs in the bottom half, but the M ustangs cam e back with three o f their ow n in the top o f the second to push their lead to 7-3. Walton reached on an error, Elguezabal had an RBI double, Coil singled, G utierrez had an RB I single and Paullus scored a run on a ground-out. The Rams got to within 7-4 until the Mustangs scored two more in the fifth when Murray reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a Lovgren triple, while Christm an had an RBI single. The M ustangs held on for the win as Coil cam e in to get the final two outs in relief. Christman went two innings for the win with Kyle Carlson going two innings in relief, giving up one run on three hits. C hristm an w ent tw o for three with a double and an RBI. The M ustangs were leading the second game of the doubleheader, 6-0, in the bottom o f the third when the game was called on account o f darkness. The M ustangs improved to 6 and 3 on the year. They will play the Hermiston Frosh in Hermiston on Monday, May 10 at 4:30 p.m. before finishing out the season at Riverside on Thursday, M ay 13, at 4:30 p.m. for a doubleheader. The Mustangs took an early 1 -0 lead in the bottom of the first when Quinn Peck reached on an error and came around to score on a Dan Basile double. The Pirates scored three in the top ot the second, but the Mustangs came back with a run in the bottom half when Robbie Smith singled and ended up scoring on a sacrifice bunt fly by Travis Eubanks. The Pirates increased their lead to 5-2 in the third, but the M ustangs got a run back when Basile, Kyle Carlson and Riley W ight singled and Smith was hit by a pitch to force in a run. The Pirates led 7-3 in the fourth. The M ustangs rallied to tie it when Peck singled, Cody Hollis walked, Basile had an RBI single, Sloan Keithley was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Sm ith and Colton H anson each reached on errors with tw o out to score three m ore runs. The Mustangs took an 8-7 lead in the sixth as Carlson singled, Keithley bunted him over to second and he came in to score as W ight reached on an error. The Pirates cam e right back to tie it in the seventh. After a scoreless eighth, the Pirates scored a run in the top o f the ninth to take a 9-8 lead. The M ustangs cam e right back though w hen Peck walked, stole second and scored when Basile reached on an error with two out. After Carlson walked, Keithley singled to score Basile with the winning run. Carlson pitched the last three innings to pick up the win, giving up just one hit while striking out six. Basile went four for five with a double, two RBIs and three runs. Peck went tw o for five with a double and scored three runs. Keithley w ent tw o for four, while C arlson went two for five. HJH Track team competes at Pendleton meet T he H eppner Jr. H igh track team com peted in their fourth m eet o f the season on A pril 23 at the Pendleton Invitational Track Meet, where sixth grades competed against sixth, seventh against seventh grades, and eighth against eighth. “T his was a big m eet held under poor w eather conditions. Team members had to learn to handle the weather components, and did well with the cold rainy w eather,” said coach Susan Hisler. Teams participating were Pendleton. Umatilla, Heppner, lone, Stanfield, Ukiah, W eston-M cEw en, Echo, C olum bia, Pilot Rock and Helix. Results are as follows. Sixth grader Catherine M cElligott has rebroken her 1500m record and is near Abby K ahl’s 1995 800m record. C hris Wellington, a seventh grader, is something to watch in the 400m, 800m and 200m , and is one o f H eppner’s fastest seventh graders on the all time list. Brynna Rust, a sixth grader, will challenge for 100m hurdles, 100m and 200m titles. H eppner is strong in both girls’ and boys’ 1500m and 800m runs. The field events have also seen a lot o f success, w here, as usual, the high jum p is loaded with Heppner kids, as well as shot and discus events,” Hisler said.
