St. Patrick’s Senior Center news
On Thursday, M ay 6, at 9 a.m ., the senior bus will
leave for a one day-bird house and bird watching tour through
part o f Horse Heaven Hills country to Bickleton, Washington.
D river will be Ed Baker. Lunch stop will be in Bickleton or
other town within close proximity. A round trip is planned by
way o f the Um atilla bridge and returning to Heppner by way
o f the Biggs Junction bridge. For more information, or to sign
up, contact the senior center.
O n W ednesday, M ay 12, volunteers from H eppner
Christian Church will host and assist during the W ednesday
luncheon. N o m enu has appeared on the office v olunteer’s
desk. Lil Boyce, however, has news: Judy Buschke will be
back to her volunteer station very soon.
D on’t forget cards, bingo and jigsaw puzzles that are
regular activities o f the center.

Well, it’s about time.
W hen you and 1 left Fort
C a m p b e ll, K e n tu c k y , a
number of years ago, you were
already qualified to be a judge.
You had tried some of the most
difficult crim inal cases I had
ev er seen in the m ilitary -
murder, drug dealing, larceny,
em bezzlem ent - and you had
better success than anyone on
the staff. W hat was fun to
w atch w as how you coupled
your excellent legal abilities
w ith serious attention to the
guidance given you by the trial
ju d ic ia ry w hich pro d u ced
exceptional results in every
c a s e . Y ou g re w in to an

up nights but you never failed

legal advice.

1 am writing in support
o f Bill Jones for Sixth Judicial
District Circuit Court Judge.
Bill has an extensive and varied
legal background. No, Bill
was not “bom and raised in
Um atilla County” , but he and
his wife June have chosen to
live here and they both have
c o n tr ib u te d a lo t to th e
community.

position in the fall o f 2003.
Then R udy M urgo and Dan
Hill got together on the last day
to file and M urgo w ithdrew
and Hill simultaneously filed in
his p lace. N ow M u rg o is
e n d o rs in g H ill, s u rp ris e ,
surprise. Hill also says he is the
only candidate w ith judicial
experience and that is not true.
Bill was appointed an assistant
federal m ag istrate on tw o
different military installations
w here he heard and decided
municipal court cases involving
civilians and dependents.

him when he was the courteous

bags at the old PGG hardware
sto re in H erm isto n . A fter
graduating from Oregon State
U n iv e r s ity in 1983 a n d
Willamette University in 1986,
becoming a legislative aid and
a s tin t in th e A rm y, D an
returned to Herm iston where
he has been in private practice
ever since. N ot only has he
been successful in the private
s e c to r, b u t D an h a s a ls o
served as m unicipal judge,
prosecutor, circuit judge pro-
tem. and lieutenant colonel in
the Oregon National Guard.

on several occasions and have
always been impressed that he
never loses sight o f hum an

tangle o f laws and statutes and

Daniel J. Hill. I am a senior trial

the state o f O regon in both
federal and state courts. My
practice extends to all com ers
o f the state. I have had an
opportunity to practice before
and understand the value o f a

throughout this state.
I am also a colonel in
the O regon A rm y N ational
G uard and the state ju d g e

experience with Dan Hill goes
back to 1987 when he joined
o u r s ta f f ju d g e a d v o c a te

together for the past 17 years,
often taking opposite sides in
v a r io u s m ilita r y j u s t i c e
proceedings. I have found Dan
to b e f a ir - m in d e d a n d
extremely hardworking, with a
k e e n a b ility to d e v e lo p
system s and procedures to
im prove the ju stice system .
J u s tic e o n ly w in s w h e n
litigants feel they have been
given a fair chance to present
their case, and Dan has always
so u g h t ju s tic e . D an has
recently worked on a complete
overhaul to the O regon Code
o f M ilitary Justice that has
b e e n s u b m itte d to th e
legislative counsel for action by
the 2005 Oregon Legislature.
His devotion to soldiers and
airmen through many hours of
personal sacrifice for their
benefit has gained him the
respect o f all.
It is not my practice to
write letters to the editor, but
judicial candidates are often
u n k n o w n to v o te rs. Y our
readers should know that they
will not be unhappy in selecting
Dan Hill as their next circuit
court Judge.

Betty has w orked for CSU
Transport, Inc. for the past six
years. As terminal manager, I
have evaluated her to be an
employee o f the highest caliber.
She is q u ick to learn new
ta s k s , a n d h e r w o rk i s .
flawless. Betty is intelligent,
works quickly and efficiently i
and alw ays gives her best
effort when doing any job. She
works independently and gets
along w ell w ith all o f the
em ployees w ho w ork at the
Arlington terminal, as well as
those she deals w ith on the
corporate level. Betty Bums is
an excellent em ployee and
deserves the opportunity to
have a ch allenging career.
Betty would be a positive asset

What’s wrong
Efforts
with this picture? appreciated
To the Editor:
O u r m a y o r w as
q u o te d in an o u t-o f-to w n
new spaper as saying he is
ashamed for visitors to see our
run-down city hall. Something
th at is really a sham e fo r
tourists to see is the very small
area allotted to the m emory of
people who gave their lives for
this country. In fact, it is so
small that chairs have to be
placed out in the roadw ay to
se a t p e o p le a tte n d in g the
annual ceremony honoring our
w ar dead. C onnected to this
memorial by a foot bridge is a
v e ry la r g e , b e a u tif u lly
landscaped area, w here sod
has been laid and trees planted;
where sidewalks, an irrigation
system, and street lights have
been installed. T his area is
dedicated to honoring a few
pieces of junk farm machinery.
For some reason this
picture does not seem to be
quite right. I don’t know how
many residents were asked for
their input on the theme for this
park, but 1 wasn’t one o f them.
H ad I been, I w ould have
opted for an expansion of the
memorial honoring those who
died defending our freedom. I
d o n ’t k n o w w ho d e c id e d
w h a t th e th e m e f o r th is
H eritag e P laza sh o u ld be.
Thankfully, I can say 1 had
nothing to do with it.

To the Editor:
Many o f us remember
the old bulk plant and when it
w as rem oved. It left an ugly
area that w as one o f the first
sights that greeted all who
entered our tow n and the old
wire fence full of tumbleweeds
and trash. Today, thanks to
many hard-working people of
our tow n, we have a lovely
H e r ita g e p a rk , p lu s th e
m em orial park and the farm
museum. We would like to let
you know that your efforts are
really appreciated. We often
h e a r o u t-o f-to w n v isito rs
saying w hat a beautiful town
H eppner is and we are very
proud to agree with them.
