Mustangs and Tigers split key doubleheader bases loaded walk to score By Rick Paullus A seventh inning rally came up short in the second gam e and the H eppner Mustang baseball team settled for a split in a key Columbia B asin C onference doubleheader against the visiting Stanfield Tigers. The M ustangs, 10-1-1, 1-1 in CBC, won the first game 13- 1 in five innings before dropping the second game 4- 3. TTiey continue CBC play at W eston-M cE w en on Saturday, A pril 24 for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m., before returning home on Tuesday, April 27 for a game against Umatilla at 4:30 p.m. It took the Mustangs a while to get going in the first game, but once they did they blew the game open with eight runs in the third inning on eight hits. Chuy Elguezabal got them going with a walk, Jode Coil had a ground-rule double and Josh Gutierrez, Kory Paullus. Kiel Naims, Luke Murray and Kyler Lovgren each had RBI singles. Then Nick Christman singled, Cody Walton had a RBI single, Elguezabal drew a another run and Coil reached on a fielder’s choice to score another to make it 8-0. The Tigers scored a run in the fourth, but the Mustangs ended it in the fifth when Elguezabal had a two- out double. Coil a RBI single, Gutierrez a single, Paullus a RBI double and N aim s a three-run home run. Elguezabal went four innings allowing two hits while striking out four to pick up the win. Coil went three for four with two RBI and scored twice. Naims went two for four with four RBI and scored twice. Paullus went two for four with two RBI and scored two runs. Gutierrez went two for four and scored twice. The second game turned into a pitcher’s duel between Elguezabal and the Tigers’ Tyler Gabriel. The Mustangs took a 1 -0 lead into the sixth inning getting a run in the third when Christman reached on an error, stole second, went to third on a Zach Skaggs groundout and scored on a Walton infield hit. Murray led off with a single, Lovgren doubled, Christman had a RBI single and Lovgren scored after Christman got into a rundown after a pick-off attempt. With two out, Elguezabal singled and went to third on a Walton single, but the rally ended on a groundout. Elguezabal went the distance to take the loss, striking out nine while giving up seven hits. Walton went three for four and Lovgren and Paullus had doubles for the Mustangs. After taking an 11-6 win in the first game, the Heppner Mustang JV baseball team couldn’t hold on to a lead and dropped the second game 11-10 to the Grant Union Prospectors on Friday, April 16 in John Day. The Mustangs, now 3 and 2, will be at home for a rematch against the Prospectors on Friday, April 23 at 11 a.m. in a doubleheader and will host the H erm iston Frosh on Monday, April 26 at 4 p.m. The Prospectors took a 3-0 lead after three before the Mustangs finally got their bats going as Dan Basile walked, went to third on a Kyle C arlson single and scored on Sloan Keithley’s groundout. Carlson eventually scored on a passed ball to make it 3-2. Meghan McCabe defeated Jennifer Mendoza, 8-1. Emily Key posted an 8-0 victory against Nitasha Beaver. Key and M cC abe team ed up against Veronica Lezama and Lucia Madrigal defeating the Pirates 8-1. Peck had a RBI single, Colton Hanson reached on an error to score one, Basile had a RBI single, Carlson had a RBI ground- rule double, Sloan Keithley had a RBI single and another run was scored when Wight reached on a fielder’s choice to make it 11 -4. The P ro sp ecto rs scored single runs in the sixth and seventh but it w asn’t enough as the Mustangs held on for the win. The Mustangs took an early lead in the second game, getting two runs in the top of the first as Peck reached on an error, Hollis bunted him to second and scored on a C arlson sin g le and he eventually scored on a wild pitch. The Prospectors came right back with three runs in the bottom half and added two more in the second and held a 5-2 lead until the fourth inning. Lovgren reached on a fielder’s choice. Peck and Hollis singled, Lovgren scored on a wild pitch, Basile walked to load the bases and Carlson trip led to em pty them . Keithley then hit a RBI double To give the Mustangs a 7-5 lead. |J They added tow more in the fifth w hen Travis Eubanks reached on a fielder’s choice. Peck walked, Hollis moved both runners up on a groundout and Basile scored them with a single. The P ro sp ecto rs scored three in the bottom half to get within 9-8, but the Mustangs added a run in the top of the sixth when Hanson reached on an error and came around to score on a Peck groundout. T he P ro sp ecto rs scored two in the bottom half to tie it at 10-10 and got the game winner in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out Carlson went two for four with four RBI. Basile went two for two with two RBI. Keithley went two for five and Peck scored three runs.
