Head Coach S u san H isle r, w ho has coached for 10 years, is once again coachin g H eppner. Hisler is assisted by new coach David Melville who grew up in Enterprise. H e p p n e r to o k 44 athletes to the meet. This year is the first year for including sixth graders into the program and they are a great addition to the team said Coach Hisler. The team is also proud to be wearing new blue uniforms, since the last uniforms were purchased in 1991. The sixth and seventh g rad e g irls to o k Team Champion honors winning with 143 points. Individual places were: Catherine McElligott- Champion 300m hurdles (56.3 seconds). Champion 800m (2 m inutes 56 seco n d s), 4 ,h 100m hurdles and 2nd high jump; Nikki Fritz- Champion high jump (4 feet 5 inches) and 6,h shot put; Ashley Wolff- 3rd discus; Whitney Smith- 4lh shot put and 4th high jum p; B yrnna R ust- C h am p io n 100m h u rd le s (2 0 .4 6 seconds), Champion 100m (13.99 seconds), Champion 200m (3 0 .1 9 s e c o n d s), Champion long jump (13 feet 1 in c h ); and K riste n VanCleave- Champion javelin (85 feet 2 inches), 2nd 400m and 3rd 300m. The eighth grade girls were the Runner Up team with 110 points, to Umatilla’s 118 points. Paul Neiffer narrowly lost toTeren Humphrey taking the first set 6-3, losing the 4dl discus and 6th 4x 100 relay #2 \Taylor Kempas- 4th 300m hurdles, 3rd long jum p, 4lh 4x 100 relay #1 and 2nd 8(X)m; Kendra Rayburn- Champion shot put (26 feet 3 inches) and 5,h high ju m p ; and K atie Kilkenny- 4lh high jum p, 6'1' 4x100 relay #2 and 4th shot put. The sixth and seventh grade boys placed third overall with 91 points. Hardman to hold Spring Potluck Hardman Hall will be holding their annual Spring Potluck Dinner and Annual Meeting on Sunday, April 25 at 1 p.m. at the Hardman Hall. The center will furnish a baked ham. On the agenda for the meeting include, election of a new tre a su re r, as B etty Carlson is stepping down, and of trustees; dates will be set for mowing and placing the Veterans markers and flags at the cem etery; plans for an alternate water supply for the hall must be set and ready to go before the plans for the Oyster Feed can be set; and input on how to keep the Hall a supporter of the community. William McNary posted his singles win w ith an 8-2 victory over Heather Lopez. lone tennis teams declare win against Weston-McEwen lone te n n is team s declared another win at home on Thursday, April 8 against Weston-McEwen. lone men took six of seven matches while the women won both matches they played against theTigerscots. Tyler Raible played a marathon match, coming back from a 1 -4 deficit to narrowly defeat Darrell Roberts 9-8, with a tiebreaker score of 7- 4. Takom Khempila also went into a tiebreaker defeating Jason Kennedy, 9-8 with a tiebreaker score of 7-5. Brian Bunch easily defeated Josh M cCullough, 8-2. William M cN ary p o sted the only m en’s loss, with a 4-5 score against Jacob Ellis. Johnny C o llin and T y ler B row n d efea ted Rex U reno and Kenny M cC ullough, 8-5. Taylor M cElligott and Tyler Brown crushed Josh Aldrich and Cody Curtis, 8-4. Johnny Collin teamed up with Robert McElligott to conquer Calder Alford and Mike Lindell. For the girls, Tina Tuzarova had no problem defeating Molly Tucker 8-0. Meghan McCabe and Emily K ey w o rk ed h ard to overthrow Kayla Parades and Ashley Rideout with an 8-6 victory. lone m en’s tennis teams accepted the summons to the Umatilla Invitational on Saturday, April 10 coming home with medals in the men’s doubles category. T akorn K hem pila and Tyler Raible brought home first place medals by defeating Zach Agee and Ben Strickland of Hermiston 8-1. K h e m p ila /R a ib le th en defeated Caleb Conlee and Daniel Mitchell of Mac Hi, 8- 4 to ad v a n c e to the championship against Josh Paine and Rafael Torres of Mac Hi. Raible/Khem pila narrowly lost the first set, 6- 7, with a 4-7 tiebreaker, and took the next two sets, 6-3, 6-2. Johnny Collin and Taylor McElligott narrowly lost their first match to Caleb Conlee and Daniel Mitchell of Mac Hi, 7-9. Collin/McElligott lost to Pine/Eddy of Umatilla, 6- 7, 5-7 and then defeated Adlrich/Curtis of Weston- McEwen, 6-4. lone women tennis teams traveled to Stanfield to participate in the Stanfield Invitational. Tina Tuzarova cruised to the championship bracket and brought home a first place medal. Tuzarova’s hard serves were too hard for Hanna Kaseberg, taking an 8-0 victory from her Sherman County opponent. Tuzarova then defeated a fellow Czech Republic exchange student from M ac H i, D an ila > f f r f * I Smehlikova, 8-2. Tuzarova advanced to the quarterfinals to defeat Tiffany G ray of Sherman County, 6-1, 6-1. T uzarova defeated R enea Sager of Mac Hi 6-0,6-4 for the Championship. Meghan McCabe and Emily Key teamed up to post a fourth place finish. McCabe/ Key easily defeated Lemmon/ Naugher o f Stanfield, 8-2. McCabe/Key lost to Alley/Hill of Sherman County, 3-6,3-6 and then narrowly lost against H ill/B re h m o f S h erm an County, 5-7, 7-5, 6-7 with a tiebreaker score of 5-7. Local student receives WSU scholarship C h a n te a K. Macaulay, a senior at Heppner High School, was awarded a Cougar Freshman Academic A w ard fo r $ 5 5 0 0 from Washington State University. The Mustangs improved to 6-0-1 on the year and will begin the Columbia Basin Conference sc h e d u le w ith a key doubleheader at home against the S ta n fie ld T ig e rs on Saturday, April 17 then travel to Pilot Rock on Tuesday, April 20. T ra ilin g 2 -0 , the Mustangs rallied in the second to tie the game at 2-2 when Kiel Nairns singled, Luke M urray doubled and both scored as K yler L ovgren reached on an error. They took the lead in the th ird w hen C huy E lg u e z a b a l d o u b le d and scored on a Josh Gutierrez single. The Mustangs banged out 23 hits on the day to improve to 8-0-1 on the year and will b e g in C o lu m b ia B asin Conference play on Saturday, A p ril 17 by h o stin g the S ta n fie ld T ig e rs fo r a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon and then will travel to Pilot Rock on Tuesday, April 20 for a 4:30 p.m. single game. In the first game, the teams were scoreless until the top of the third when Nick C hristm an w alked, Cody Walton singled, Zach Skaggs w alked to load the bases, Chuy Elguezabal walked to force in a run, Jode Coil had a RBI single. Josh Gutierrez was hit by a pitch to force in another run and Kory Paullus cleared the bases with a double to give the Mustangs a 6-0 lead. They added two more in the fourth when Skaggs walked, Gutierrez reached on a fielder’s choice and Paullus and Kiel Naims had two-out RBI singles. The Mustangs made it a 10-run game in the sixth when Gutierrez singled and went to third on a Paullus single. Gutierrez then scored on a balk and Luke Murray had a RBI single to make it 10- 0. It would be more than enough as Elguezabal shut the Bulldogs down allowing no runs on two hits while striking out eight and walking two to improve to 4 and 0 on the year. Paullus went three for four with a double and four RBI, with Murray going two for four and Gutierrez scoring three runs. The Mustangs jumped out in the second game getting six runs in the first inning when Elguezabal was hit by a pitch, Coil singled, Gutierrez bunted them over to second and third and Paullus scored them with a single. Murray then walked, Christm an singled, N aim s scored two with a double and two more scored as Walton reached on an error. T hey ad d ed eig h t more in the fourth as Walton doubled, Elguezabal was hit by a pitch, Gutierrez reached on an error to score W alton, Paullus had a RBI single, M u rray w a lk e d , K y ler Lovgren grounded out to sc o re a ru n , C h ris tm a n walked and came around to score, Naims singled, Walton reached on an error to score another run and Elguezabal scored two with a double to , make it 14-1. The Bulldogs scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to get within 14-6, J but the Mustangs came back with one in the top of the sixth when Lovgren singled and came around to score on a John Franzwa single. The Bulldogs added another run in the sixth but the M ustangs answ ered in the seventh as Coil singled, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a P a u llu s g ro u n d o u t. T he Bulldogs added a run in the bottom half and had the bases loaded but a groundout ended the threat. Christman went fo u r, innings allowing one run on one hit and no walks in picking up his second win o f the ’ season. Elguezabal and Naims each went two for three with a double scoring twice and driving in tw o runs, with Christman going two for two and scoring twice. Paullus went two for four with four RBI and scored twice, Coil went two for five with two runs scored and Walton scored twice.
