FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 11,2004 Mustang girls lose to Vikings late By Kick Paullus A 22-13 advantage in the fourth quarter helped the Umatilla Vikings to a 62-46 win over the Heppner Mustang girls’ varsity on Friday. Feb. 6 in Umatilla. The Mustangs fell to 5 and 6 in the Columbia Basin Conference and 7 and 12 overall and will wrap the regular season w ith a home game against the Wahtonka Eagles on Friday. Feb. 13. The Vikings took a 12-6 lead after one. despite three points each from Stefanie Hanson and Linsey Mitchell and still led 28-20 at the half as Shanna Rietmann had six points, Madison Bailey had five points, including a 3-pointer, and Katie Britt hit a 3-pointer. Brooke Rust had six points and Britt five, including another 3-pointer, as the Mustangs got to within 40-33 after three, but the Vikings pulled away in the fourth despite five points, including a 3-pointer, from Rust and four points from Rietmann. Rust had 11 points and two steals. Rietmann added 10 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists. Bailey had nine points and four steals, Katie Britt had eight points and Chelsea Britt had five rebounds. Mustang JV girls split two games By Kick Paullus After a disappointing loss at Umatilla on Friday, Feb. 6, the Heppner Mustang JV girls rebounded with a 40-25 win over the visiting Sherman County Huskies on Saturday, Feb. 7. The Mustangs, 9 and 8 on the year, play their final game of the year at home against Wahtonka on Friday, Feb. 13. The Mustangs fell behind 8-2 in Umatilla after one and trailed 14-6 at the half. The Vikings outscored the Mustangs 14-2 in the third to take a 28-8 lead and coasted to a 41 -19 win despite four points from Heather Yocom and three from Lynan Bingham in the fourth quarter. Bingham led the Mustangs with six points and two steals, w ith Yocom adding four points and three steals. Lyndi Patton had 11 rebounds and two steals, Sarah Price had five steals and Regi Seitz had two steals. The Mustangs took a 12-4 lead over the Huskies after one, getting four points from Laurie Murray and extended it to 26-10 at the half, getting eight points from Patton and six from Price in the second quarter. Patton had four points in the third as they led 32-18 after three and coasted through the fourth to the 40-25 win. Patton led the way with 14 points, five rebounds, five steals and two assists. Price added 12 points, five rebounds and two steals. Seitz had seven rebounds, five steals and two assists. Murray had eight rebounds and Yocom had two steals and two assists. Team: 11 3-7 25. 3-pts: none The Heppner Mustang varsity girls kept up with the first place Sherman County Huskies early leading 12-11 after one, but were outscored 38-13 in the second and third quarter eventually losing 6 1 -35 on Saturday, Feb. 7 in Heppner. The loss dropped the Mustangs to 5 and 7 in the Columbia Basin Conference and 7 and 13 overall, with one more league game with Wahtonka at Heppner on Friday, Feb. 13 before heading to the district tournament. Stefanie Hanson and Madison Bailey each had four points as the Mustangs took their 12-11 lead, but the Huskies came back to take a 33-21 lead at the half despite four points from Hanson and a 3-pointer from Katie Britt in the second quarter. The Mustangs trailed 49-^25 heading intp the fourth and got five points, including a 3-pointer, from Brooke Rdst and four from Hanson, but it wasn't enough. Hanson had 12 points and seven rebounds. Rust added six points, 15 rebounds and two assists. Chelsea Britt had seven rebounds, Shanna Rietmann had six rebounds and Linsey Mitchell had three assists. Jan. 26. The Mustangs dropped to 7 and 6 on the year. The two teams were tied after one at 8-8 as the Mustangs got four points from Sarah Price. The Bucks held a 12-11 lead at the half. They beat the Umatilla Vikings with a big third quarter, by a score of 63-47 on Friday, Feb. 6 in Umatilla, and then beat the visiting Sherman County Huskies 69-44 on Saturday, Feb. 7. The Mustangs will finish out the year with a home game against Wahtonka on Friday, Feb. 13. At Umatilla, the Mustangs took a 12-10 lead after one, getting four points from Kory Paullus and a 3-pointer from Josh Gutierrez. The Mustangs led at the half25-24, getting four second quarter points from Kyle Huddleston. They pulled away in the third, getting 10 points from Paullus, eight points from Gutierrez and three from Mikel Britt to take a 48-35 lead. Matthew VanCleave added nine points in the fourth as the Mustangs coasted to the win. Paullus led three Mustangs in double figures with 16 points. VanCleave added 15 points and Gutierrez finished with 13 points. Against the Huskies, Gutierrez had four points in the first, as the Mustangs took a 14-11 lead. They got five points each from Gutierrez and Roy Proctor and four from VanCleave . as they extended it to 38-25 at the half. Gutierrez had six points and VanCleave had four as the Mustangs took a comfortable lead of 56-35 after three and Britt had six points and Proctor five, including a 3-pointer, in the fourth as they took the win. Gutierrez led four Mustangs in double figures with 15 points. Britt added 12 points, VanCleave and Proctor added 10 each and Matt Kenny scored eight points.
