The M ustangs dropped to 3 and 4 in the CBC and 5 and 10 overall. There will be CBC games at W eston-McEwen on Friday, Jan. 30 and at hom e against Stanfield on Saturday. The R ockets ju m p ed out to a 21-10 lead after one and led 39-17 at the h a lf and outscored the M ustangs 27-19 in the second half to secure the win. Mustang girls blow out Bulldogs in second half By Rick Paullus f After trailing 15-11 late in the first quarter, the Heppner M ustang girls varsity outscored the C ulver Bulldogs 53-17, including 31 -9 in the second half, the rest o f the way to take a 64-32 win in C ulver on Saturday, Jan. 24 in Colum bia Basin C onference play. The M ustangs im proved to 4 and 4 in the CBC and 6 and 10 overall w ith gam es at W eston-M cEw en on Friday, Jan. 30 before playing at hom e on Saturday, Jan. 31 against Stanfield. The Bulldogs went up 5-0 before Shanna Rietm ann got the Mustangs on the board by hitting a long jumper. Stefanie Hanson scored inside then fed Rietmann for a lay-in then hit a 3-pointer, but the Bulldogs still led 13-9. Terra W ilson scored o ff a pass from Brooke Rust and w ith the B ulldogs leading 15-11. Rust scored o ff a rebound, K atie Britt hit tw o free throws and Rietmann scored o ff a rebound to give the Mustangs their first lead at 17-15 after one. The M ustangs, now 5 and 9 on the year, will play at Weston- M cEwen on Friday, Jan. 30, and will be at hom e on Saturday against Stanfield. The M ustangs took an 11-4 lead after one, getting five points, including a three-pointer, from Stefanie Hanson, and increased it to 17-5 at the half. Shanna R ietm ann hit a three-pointer in the third to help them to a 29-11 lead after three. C helsea B ritt had six points, Brooke Rust, four, and Rietm ann, three, in the fourth as the M ustangs cruised to the easy win. Britt led the M ustangs with nine points and nine rebounds, with Rust adding eight points and four rebounds. Rietmann had eight points and three assists; Hanson had seven points and two steals; Linsey Mitchell had four rebounds; and M adison Bailey had three assists. The M ustangs improved to 5 and 0 in the CBC and 12 and 1 overall, w ith gam es at W eston-M cEwen on Friday, Jan. 30 and at hom e against Stanfield on Saturday, Jan. 31. The Huskies led 14-12 after one, despite seven points from Luke Murray, but the Mustangs rallied in the second be hind nine points from M urray and six from Brandon Seitz to take a 29-20 lead at the half. The M ustangs continued their strong play in the third, increasing their lead to 46-30 after three behind eight points from Chuy Elguezabal, four each from Murray and Brian Smith, and a three-pointer from Aaron Griffith. M urray had six more points and Seitz added four as they held o ff the H uskies to take the win. M urray had 26 points to lead the M ustangs, with Elguezabal adding 12 points, Seitz 10 and Sm ith had eight point. The win gives the M ustangs sole possession o f first place in the C olum bia Basin Conference with a 7 and 0 record and 14 and 1 overall. The Mustangs continue CBC play at Weston- M cEw en on Friday, Jan. 30 and return hom e on Saturday, Jan. 31 to face Stanfield. The Rocket led 6-0 before Brian Smith hit a rebound basket then converted a three-point play to get the M ustangs within 8-5. Luke M urray hit a running jum per to m ake it 10-8. M urray scored tw ice and Smith once to increase the lead to 21 -14, but the Rockets cam e back to get w ithin one at 21 -20 before Justin B otefuhr hit three o f four free throw s. A fter a Rocket 3-pointer, M atthew VanCleave scored inside o ff a pass from G us Torres to give the M ustangs a 26-24 lead at the half. Seitz scored o ff a rebound to m ake it 28-24. Elguezabal hit a running jum per then fed Murray for a lay-in to m ake it 32-26, but the Rockets cam e right back to tie it at 32- 32. Seitz scored inside and M urray hit a 3-pointer, but the M ustangs led ju st 37-35 at the end o f three. M urray and B otefuhr hit jum pers to open the fourth quarter. VanCleave hit a jum per from the key and Elguezabal hit a lay-in to make it 45-39. A fter four missed free throw s by the Rockets, M urray hit tw o to m ake it 47-39. The M ustangs m issed four straight free throw s dow n the stretch and after a R ocket 3-pointer m ade it 47-44 w ith seven seconds left, Murray sealed the win by hitting two free throws with four and a half seconds left. M urray had 17 points, three steals and tw o assists. Smith scored nine points, grabbed 13 rebounds, blocked three shots and had three steals. Seitz had nine points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Mustangs fall short at Culver By Rick Paullus A combination o f a hard-fought game against Pilot Rock the night before, the long bus ride, a hot N ate Lewis and too m any fouls laid the foundation for a 71 -68 loss by the Heppner M ustang varsity boys to the Culver Bulldogs on Saturday, Jan. 24 in Columbia Basin Conference play. The Mustangs fell to 7 and 1 in the CBC and 14 and 2 overall on the season and will be at W eston-M cEw en on Friday, Jan. 30 and back hom e on Saturday, Jan. 31 against Stanfield. The Mustangs started out alright as Justin Botefuhr hit a ju m p e r and Luke M urray scored o ff a pass from C huy Elguezabal to give them a 5-3 lead and Brandon Seitz converted a three-point play to make it 8-7. M urray hit a jum per then fed Z ach Skaggs inside to m ake it 12-9 but tw o 3-pointers by Lewis gave the Bulldogs a 15-12 lead. Seitz hit three o f four free throw s to tie it up then scored o ff a pass from Elguezabal to tie it again at 17-17, but the B ulldogs took a 19-17 lead after one. Gus Torres scored off a drive, Seitz hit two free throws, then scored o ff a drive, but the Bulldogs still led 27-23, but a three-point play from Kyler Lovgren got the Mustangs to within one. Seitz scored o ff a rebound, but the Bulldogs took a 34- 28 lead at the half. M urray and B otefuhr scored to open the third, but eight straight points from Lewis m ade it 42-32 until M urray scored o ff a drive and Torres fed Botefuhr for a lay-in. Smith scored inside then Skaggs scored o ff a steal, but the official scorer didn’t catch it so it w asn’t counted and it would hurt the M ustangs later. Lewis hit two more 3-pointers to close out the third with the Bulldogs leading 54-40. Smith scored inside and Elguezabal hit a runningjumper then a 3-pointer to m ake it 57-47. Sm ith then scored o ff a rebound, Skaggs scored o ff a rebound, Elguezabal hit tw o free throw s and Botefuhr scored o ff a rebound to m ake it 60- 55. Smith scored o ff a rebound, Elguezabal scored o ff a steal. Sm ith scored o ff a pass from Lovgren to m ake it 65-61. Seitz then scored o ff a rebound and B otefuhr scored o ff a pass from Torres to m ake it 67-65 with 1:30 left. Lovgren hit a 3- pointer w ith just over a minute left to get the M ustangs within one at 69-68, but that w as as close as they w ould get as the Bulldogs held on for the w in. T he B ulldogs hit 14 o f 22 free throw s in the fourth quarter and 30 o f 49 for the gam e com pared to the M ustangs 12 o f 18. Mustangs boys blow out Eagles By Rick Paullus T he H eppner M ustang varsity boys blew past the W ahtonka Eagles, 83-23, on Tuesday, Jan. 20, in a m ake-up o f a Colum bia Conference game originally scheduled for Fri day, Jan. 9. The gam e w as postponed due to bad weather. The M ustangs im proved to 6 and 0 in the CBC and 13 and 1 overall. The M ustangs took a 17-10 lead after one, getting six points from Brian Smith, five from Brandon Seitz, and four from M atthew Van Cleave. They outscored the Eagles 28-5 in the second, getting seven points from Sm ith and four each from Van Cleave, Luke M urray and Josh Gutierrez, and took a 45-15 lead at the half. Van Cleave had six points and Seitz four, as they in creased their lead to 61-20 after three. They got 14 points from Brian Haguewood and four from Aaron Griffith to finish the rout. Van C leave led the M ustangs w ith 16 points, with H aguew ood adding 14 point. Smith 13, and Seitz 12 point. Mustang JV boys win two By Rick Paullus The H eppner M ustang JV boys won two games over the weekend, beating the visiting Pilot Rock Rockets, 56-41, on Friday, Jan. 23, before beating Culver, 60-35, in Culver on Saturday, Jan. 24. The M ustangs improved to 12 and 1 on the year. The team will be at W eston-M cEw en on Friday, Jan. 30, before com ing hom e to play Stanfield on Saturday, Jan. 31. The M ustangs took a 14-11 lead over the Rockets in the first, getting eight points from Josh Gutierrez and six from R ory K ilkenny, and led 20-19 at the half. K ilkenny had 10 points and M att Kenny, four, in the third as the M ustangs in creased their lead to 38-26. They got eight points from Gutierrez and five m ore from Kilkenny as they held o ff the Rockets in the fourth to get the win. K ilkenny had 23 points, w ith G utierrez adding 22 points, to lead the way. Gutierrez had six points in the first, but the M ustangs and B ulldogs w ere tied at 10-10 after one in Culver. Kenny had eight points and Kilkenny, three, in the second as they pulled aw ay to a 27-23 lead at the half.
