T he M ustangs, now 2 and 3 on the s e a s o n , p la y a t h o m e on S a tu rd a y , J a n . 3 a g a in s t R iv e r s id e th e n tra v e l to Hermiston on M onday, Jan. 5 to play the Bulldog Frosh. A gainst the Irish, the M u s ta n g s g o t th re e firs t q u arter po in ts from Lynan Bingham and six points from K atie Britt in the second, but tra ile d 17-14 at h a lftim e . B ingham scored three points in the third as the Mustangs got w ithin 19-17 after three then got five points from Lyndi Patton and three from Sarah Price in the fourth to pull out the narrow win. B in g h am and B ritt each had six points to lead the M ustangs, w ith Patton adding five points, seven rebounds and six steals. T he M ustangs im proved to 2 and 0 in the CBC and 5 and 1 overall. Luke M urray hit a 3- pointer and scored six points in th e first q u a rte r as the M ustangs took a 13-11 lead after one. Brian Sm ith added seven points and G us Torres four in the second to take a 28-21 lead at the half. T h e M ustangs evened their record at 3 and 3 on the season, with th e w in a n d w ill p la y at R iv e r s id e a t h o m e on S a tu r d a y a n d w ill b e a t Hermiston on Monday, Jan. 5. T h e M u s ta n g s g o t four points each from Sarah Price and Lyndi Patton in the first quarter to take a 10-2 lead and got four m ore from Patton in the second to increase their lead to 22-6 at the half. T he M ustangs shut out the Panthers in the third as Price and Patton each had four points and increased their lead to 3 5 -6 a f t e r th r e e a n d coasted through the fourth for the easy win. M atthew VanCleave and K ory Paullus each had four points as the M ustangs took a 12-5 lead after one and Paullus had four more and Roy Proctor hit a 3-pointer in the second as they extended their lead. Josh Gutierrez scored six po in ts and R ory K ilkenny three as they increased their lead to 43-21 after three. Mustang boys rally to beat Prospectors to make it 49-40 after three By Rick Paullus The H eppner M ustang boys v arsity fell behind after one, but rallied to get a hard fought 67-56 win o v e r th e G r a n t U n io n Prospectors in John Day on Tuesday, Dec. 23 to improve to 7 and 1 overall. In a fast-paced back and fourth first quarter, Luke M urray scored o f f a drive, Brandon Seitz hit three o f four fre e th ro w s a n d C h u y Elguezabal scored twice inside off drives to give the Mustangs a 9-4 lead. Seitz hit two more free throw s and M urray hit a lo n g ju m p e r , b u t th e Prospectors cam e back to get within 13-12. Justin Botefuhr sc o re d o f f a reb o u n d and Brian Smith scored o ff a pass from K yler Lovgren, but the Prospectors hit two 3-pointers at the buzzer to give them an 18-17 lead after one. Smith hit one o f two free throws to tie it then Seitz scored the Mustangs next eight points to m ake it 26-20 and E lg u e z a b a l h it a ru n n in g jum per, but the Prospectors cam e back to get w ithin 28- 26. Elguezabal hit a running jum per and after the Prospectors w ent on a 6-0 run, Murray scored twice and Elguezabal hit a lay-in, then M urray scored o ff a rebound quarters. Murray hit one o f two free throws, Seitz scored o ff a rebound and Sm ith hit two free throw s to make it 54-40. Torres scored o ff a drive, then M urray scored five straight and Brian Haguewood scored o ff a pass from Elguezabal to m ake it 6 3 -4 4 . Mustang JV boys beat Irish in second half By Rick Paullus A 33-15 advantage in the second h a lf carried the Heppner M ustang J V boys to a 62-38 w in over the visiting D eSales Irish on M onday, Dec. 22 to im prove to 4 and 1 on the year. DeSales had an 11- 10 lead after one despite four p o in ts fro m M a tth e w VanCleave, but the Mustangs got four points from M att Kenny in the second to take a 29-23 lead at the half. Josh Gutierrez had six points and VanCleave three as the M ustangs increased their lead to 44-32 a fte r three. VanCleave had six points and Kenny, Mikel Britt and Rory Kilkenny each had four as they coasted through the fourth to win going away. VanCleave led three M ustangs in double figures with 15 points. Kenny added 12 points and Britt added 10. Gutierrez finished w ith eight points.
