T he se v e n th g rad e Ponies found themselves down by only tw o at the end o f the first quarter, but in the second the B roncos started to buck and gallo p aw ay from the Ponies w ho trailed 21-32 at the half. Then a low scoring third pretty m uch spelled the gam e for the Ponies, as the final scored show ed 33-50. The Ponies w ere led by Jo e P ra n g e r w ith tw o points, Dalton W ellman with six, Spencer Palm er with 17, Jo sh S hank w ith tw o and Jason Houweling with six. H eppner 12 9 2 10- 33 Sunridge 14 18 108- 50 T h e e ig h th g r a d e Ponies challenged the Broncos o f Sunridge, but it w as the B ro n c o s w h o ro se to the occasion and netted a 22-29 win. T he B ronco’s cam e out o f the chutes bucking and d id n ’t let up until the fourth. They held a 4-5 edge at the first. They increased it to 8- 13 at the h alf and by the third it was 14-23. In the fourth, the Ponies chipped a couple o f the lead w ith the final score being 22-29. Those who canned a bucket for the Ponies w ere Lane Bailey w ith three points, N acho Elguezabal with five, M a tt M c C a b e w ith fo u r, M ichael W ellm an w ith tw o, Sean M urray w ith three and Nathan VanCleave with five. Vernon B asketball Tournament. In the second round o f the tournam ent, the Ponies were going up against the host, the Mt. Vernon M ustangs. They w ere a horse o f a different color as the Ponies spotted them 11 players to six and in size, 6 foot 2 inches to 5 foot 6 inches. H ow ever, in h e a r t th e P o n ie s w e re unm atched as they opened up a 10-2 lead in the first. By the second, it w as 15 to 7, ev en into the third the Ponies were still on top at 22-14. In the fourth, the Ponies ran out o f oats and m anaged only three points to the Mustangs 16. The final score w as 25-30. T he Ponies scoring leaders were Joe Pranger with three points, Dalton Wellman with six, Spencer Palmer with 12, Josh S hank w ith tw o, B raden B ritt w ith tw o and Grant Smith. O n c e a g a in , th e Ponies cam e out on the short side o f the stick as the B um s team had an “ Honest A be” at 6 foot 4 inches. However, no challenge is too great for the Ponies as they pretty m uch m atched the Lincolns bucket for bucket. They w ere 6-8 in the first and at the h a lf it was 14-16. In the third, a one-man w reck in g crew can n ed 13 points and fouled out their big m an and put them on top 27- 26. In the fourth, 42 m inutes ofbasketball and fatigue set in and the gallop turned to a trot and the Ponies were outscored .j-f?, ».ith the llpal score being 30-32. The scorers for the Ponies were Joe Pranger with tw o points, Dalton W ellman w ith six, Spencer Palmer with 20, Josh Shank with two points and Braden Britt and G rant Smith contributed just as much as a basket. The T ig e r s c o ts opened the scoring, but it was all H eppner the rest o f the quarter. Justin B otefuhr hit a long jumper, Chuy Elguezabal got a steal and lay-in and B randon Seitz scored o ff a d riv e . After an even first quarter, the Tigerscots went on a 15-2 run and w ent on to a 45-36 win in Colum bia Basin C o n f e r e n c e p la y . T h e M ustangs, 0-1 and 1-4, will face Imbler on Saturday, Dec. 27 a n d G r a n t U n io n on M onday, D ec. 29, b o th at hom e in non-league gam es. The Mustangs will get back to CBC play on Friday, Jan. 9 at Wahtonka and at home against C ulver on Saturday, Jan. 10. The Mustangs jumped out to an 8-2 lead, getting a lay-in from Shanna Rietmann, a r e b o u n d b a s k e t fro m S te fa n ie H an so n an d tw o inside baskets from C helsea Britt. T he T igerscots cam e back to get w ithin 8-7, but a 3 - p o in te r fro m M a d is o n B a ile y m ade it 11-7. The Tigerscots led 26- 13 at the h alf and increased it to 37-15 late in the third before the M ustangs got going as B ailey hit one o f tw o free throw s, Rietm ann scored o ff a drive and Susan Southworth com pleted a three-point play to end the third, trailing 39-21. R ietm ann hit a free th ro w , B ritt c o m p le te d a three-point play, Brooke Rust m ade one o f tw o free throw s and B ritt m ade a lay-in on a pass from B ailey to get the Mustangs to within 41 -28 with 5:00 left. Vernon fo r th e ir b a s k e tb a ll tournament. In the opening gam e a g a in s t th e M t. V e rn o n M ustangs, the Ponies put on a clinic and tallied a 52-26 win. T he Ponies show ed no bus lag as they cantered to a 12-5 first quarter lead. The canter turned into a trot and the Ponies held a 22-10 half tim e lead. In the third, the Ponies almost no-showed and allow ed the M ustangs back into the game 37-24. Yet in the fourth, they were back to full gallop taking the final score to 52-26. O nce again the Ponies were found grazing instead o f h a z in g a n d a llo w e d th e Lincolns back into the gam e, 29-26. But in the home stretch and heading for the wire, tke Ponies raced to a 40-32 win. The Ponies had pretty good balance in scoring with four players having eight or m ore points.
