In the opening gam e for Heppner, they took on the A th e n a -W e sto n P a n th e rs. Both teams cam e out sluggish and they were tied at the half, 6 - 6 . In the second half, the Ponies found their range and opened up a lead that they never relinquished. W hen the buzzer sounded, the Ponies had taken their opening game 19-10 and found them selves in the championship bracket. The Ponies were lead by Spencer Palm er w ith 13 points and Joe Pranger, Josh Shank and Matt Holland each with two. The Vikings ju m p ed out to an early lead and kept the pressure on and the Ponies were not able to handle it. By halftime they were down 3-15. A fter the break, the Ponies w ere able to regroup and played at a more even keel w ith the Vikings. H ow ever, Ponies w ere headed for the th ir d p la c e g a m e , b e in g outscored 10-24. T h e R o c k e ts h a d beaten the Ponies in their two prev ious meetings during the regular season and were set to blast oft'again, but the Ponies w e re n ’t about to let them complete their mission. The first h a lf was all defense and three free throws as the Rockets held onto a 1 - 2 lead. In the second half, the Ponies w ere not about to be d e n ie d and o u tsc o re d the R ockets 9 to 7 and captured third place winning, 10-9. The M ustangs will go for their first w ins o f the season w ith a hom e gam e against W eston-M cEw en on Friday, Dec. 19 and at Stanfield on Saturday, Dec. 20. On Friday at Mac-Hi, the M ustangs trailed 8-5 after one, but cam e back in the second. T he had five points from Katie Britt, four from Lyndi Patton and three from Sarah Price to get w ithin 20- 18 at the half. They took a 25- 24 lead after three, getting a 3-pointer from Regi Seitz, but w ent cold in the fourth as the Pioneers took the win. Sandra K rotzek and Price each added four points, but the Pirates cam e back to take a 25-19 lead at the half. The Pirates outscored the M ustangs 21-12 in the second half to win going away. On Friday, Dec. 12 the Mustangs traveled to Mac- H i a n d d ro p p e d a 5 7 -3 7 decision to the Pioneers. The Pioneers jum ped out to an 18- 8 lead after one despite four points from M ikel B ritt and H eppner trailed 33-14 at the half. The M ustangs got four points from Kory Paullus and three from Josh Gutierrez in the t h ir d , b u t th e P io n e e r s increased their lead to 51 -25 and coasted through the fourth for the win. Britt led the Mustangs w ith 10 p o in ts w ith M att VanCleave and Paullus each sco rin g six and G u tie rre z adding five points. Against Riverside, the Mustangs pulled away from a first quarter tie getting four points from Rory Kilkenny in the second to take an 18-17 halftime lead. They increased their lead to 33-27 after three, g e ttin g six p o in ts fro m Gutierrez, four from Kilkenny and three each from M att K enny and Paullus, but the Pirates cam e back to tie the gam e at 38-38 at the end o f regulation. The Pirates took an early lead in the overtime, but th e M u sta n g s c a m e b a c k getting four points each from G utierrez and Paullus to take a 51-48 win.
